Marvel Studios Delays Multiverse Saga, Including Next AVENGERS Movies...But DEADPOOL 3 Is Coming Sooner!

Between the WGA strike and Marvel Studios' attempts to get back to quality over quantity, we should have seen this coming, but the entire Multiverse Saga slate has been hit by release date delays today...

Disney has just shaken up its entire release calendar, and it's not good news for the Marvel Cinematic Universe...depending on how you look at it. 

Since Bob Iger returned as Disney CEO, it appears the pressure has been taken off Marvel Studios to deliver as much theatrical and streaming content as possible. After negative reviews and lower-than-expected box office takings for a number of titles, the MCU now appears to be back to prioritising quality over quantity.

So, what's just changed? 

We'll start with the good news. On that front, Deadpool 3 has shifted from November 8, 2024 to May 3, 2024. That means we're getting the threequel six months sooner than expected, but it's all downhill from here. 

Due to that change, Captain America: Brave New World has moved to August 26, 2024. That's led to Thunderbolts being pushed to December 20, 2024, making it only the second MCU movie (Spider-Man: No Way Home is the other) to open over the holidays.

As for Blade, that's gone to February 14, 2025, while Fantastic Four has slipped to May 2, 2025. 

When it comes to the next Avengers movies, those are also coming quite a bit later than expected. The Kang Dynasty goes from May 2, 2025 to May 1, 2026, while Secret Wars jumps from May 1, 2026 to May 7, 2027. Yes, they've each been delayed by a whole year. 

We had wondered if that might be the case with the Multiverse Saga now a little more spread out and we're sure the ongoing WGA strike is a big contributing factor to these changes as well (in fact, if that's not resolved soon, more could follow). Additional time to make these movies as great as possible is no bad thing, however.

Not a bad thing at all. Obviously the strike has an impact but they need to take more time and space things out regardless.

@tmp3 - yea that is a little too fast. Personally, I'm not all that excited for that lol so its whatever to me. F4 and Blade getting more time is a plus though.

@GhostDog - F4’s delay to May felt inevitable, since Blade was gonna take its place. That’s the next MCU movie I’m excited for, especially if they manage to get Driver. their 2024 slate looks anemic rn though

@tmp3 - well the big issue with marvel lately has been changing the script after a scene is shot. The script is in and LOCKED thanks to the writers strike. So they can film confidently and only need to focus on the cgi

@TheHumanSpider2 - writers stoke wasn’t much of origins problem what most people had problem with origins was cgi claws, barakapool , mostly and blob skinny to fat

@Vigor - it’s out in 11 months, is an improv-heavy movie where they can’t improv and only just started rolling. Add to that a director that’s largely hit or miss outside of TV, and my faith isn’t super high. Maybe Tom Womsgamb can save it since he was cast lol

@GhostDog - I'll take the tradeoff, in terms of getting Deadpool 3 sooner and everything else shifting back, as that is the #1 upcoming MCU film for me. Whoo!!!

@tmp3 - how is that concerning? that's plenty of time for filming and post production then marketing at the beginning of the year with possible Superbowl trailers. obviously if the strike goes on then the date will get pushed back. a lot of these movies when they hit theaters have been done for months but on the shelf waiting in line for release. so pushing pool to may meant it would have been on the shelf for 6 months while other stuff came out.

@mountainman - Agreed. But I can look over all that if they just came out with an X-Men movie.

But they likely aren't doing that until after Secret Wars. So now I just have to wait even longer.

If they don't knock X-Men out of the park when it finally comes out I'm going to be the most disappointed person on the planet lol.

@CorndogBurglar - I totally agree and I’m eagerly awaiting the MCU mutants as well. I am enjoying your articles and wish I had the time to contribute my own fan fiction to the site.

X-Men 97 will be a nice appetizer next year, but I’m really just bored of most of the current MCU heroes. I was always a mutant guy. Grew up on them. The Avengers and even Spider-man were secondary to the X-Men and other X teams to me. I even enjoyed the Fox films for what they were just because it gave me SOMETHING. And I want something mutant related (besides animation) before 2028.

@mountainman - I agree with everything you said. I grew up during the time when the X-Men were on top of the entire comic industry. So everyone else Marvel was always secondary because there was so much mutant content that I didn't even bother with much else.

I read Spider-Man and Captain America here and there. And also Batman. Any Batman would do, but Legends of the Dark Knight was my favorite series because they were self contained stories.

I'm only bored of the MCU characters because the best ones are gone now. Strange is okay. Spidey is good. But everyone else just feels like secondary heroes.

@CorndogBurglar - Agree with all that. I hope that MCU Daredevil is good. Didn’t like him as a kid, but I got into the Miller stuff in the early 00’s and loved the Netflix show.

But yeah the mutants were the best. In the early 90’s, we had the 4 big comic cartoons - Batman, Superman, Spider-man and X-Men. All were great but X-Men TAS was the best.

Comics wise, the 80’s Claremont stuff into the 90’s mutants were all great. I fell off around Onslaught, but I read Uncanny X-Men, X-Men, New Mutants, X-Force, Wolverine, X-Factor, and Excalibur. It was all so great.

Loved the toys, trading cards, video games (besides that first NES abomination) and anything I could get my hands on.

I went to Pizza Hut to get their exclusive comics.

I had X-Men pogs.

I remember reading Wizard magazine speculating about an X-Men movie in the 90’s. They accurately cast Patrick Stewart as Xavier.

Loved the movies when they came out. Enjoyed Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon.

Loved all the Capcom fighting games with mutant characters.

Disney has to know how beloved rhe franchise is. I believe Jim Lee’s X-Men 1 is still the top selling comic book ever.

If Disney messes up the mutants, I won’t be able to forgive it. I’m just going to be done with the MCU from that point on.

@mountainman - You just literally described me to a T. I had X-Men pogs too haha. I had been wanting some for so long but couldn't find any anywhere. Then finally there was a pack at the mall that came with a bunch of them an plastic Gambit slammer.

The Pizza Hit meal that came with a personal Pizza in an X-Men box with a comic, and they sold the VHS tapes of the animated series with exclusive box art.

I had all the cards and figures. I still play Marvel Vs Capcom 2 to thos day online on PC, but played them all starting with Children of the Atom.

That Wizard magazine issue with the X-Men casting call was mind of funny. They did cast Patrick Stewart correctly, but most were weird choices. Clint Eastwood as Cable could have been awesome back in the day though.

I fell off around Operation Zero Tolerance, which was the story right after Onslaught.

I feel like we shared the same childhood lol. Everything I could find with X-Men on it, I had.

@tmp3 - If I want to watch blue underwater people, I‘lol just rewatch Wakanda Forever. Bring Thunderbolts. Everyone complains that it’s all super soldier movie which to some extent it is but I’m interested in the character interaction of these characters.
