"Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me."

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, for the third straight time in the franchise's history, has sailed to the top of the Memorial Day weekend box office with a massive $77 million domestic opening. Overseas, it performed considerably better with a $208.4 million global launch ($67.8 million in China), bringing its total worldwide sum to an impressive $285.4 million.

While the Johnny Depp-led swashbuckling adventure continued the series' fourteen-year streak of opening at #1, it scored the lowest domestic opening weekend since the original classic Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl debuted with $46.6 million back in 2003.

Meanwhile, the long weekend's other big-budget release, Baywatch, sank on arrival with a $23 million opening over four days ($27.6 million counting Thursday), which resulted in a #3 finish. The R-rated adaptation of the classic TV show starred Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Priyanka Chopra, and Alexandra Daddario in the lead roles.

Elsewhere, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continued its winning streak, finishing at #2 in its fifth frame with $25.1 million in the States and bringing its worldwide total to over $788.5 million. It has now surpassed the domestic, foreign, and worldwide totals of the original, which topped out at $773.3 million in 2014.

As for the rest of the pack, Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant saw a big drop off on its way to a surprising fourth-place finish, collecting $13.1 million over four days and bringing its worldwide sum to over $160.9 million. Warner Bros.' King Arthur: Legend of the Sword continued to struggle with $4.1 million over four days, bringing its worldwide total to a disappointing $120 million.

To cap things off, Universal's The Fate of the Furious crossed $1 billion dollars
internationally (thanks in no small part to a record-breaking $387.4 million in China), which combined with its $222.9 million domestic total brings its current worldwide sum to $1.2 billion.

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

I could see this movie being the final film, it ties together some aspects from the previous movies and ends things in a way that could effectively be a satisfying conclusion to the storyline providing some backstory for Jack, explaining the compass and re-uniting us with a few former cast members.

However, despite the ridiculous nature of the cliff-hanger, i would really enjoy seeing the group join together for a sixth and final adventure where we see them each commanding vessels against another arguably the most iconic villain from the franchise. Sure it's jumped the shark and went into a bit of a ridiculous territory, but it would be great to see them go out with all the previous cast plus the new cast in a battle royale on the seas.

Watched Pirates last night. Much better than Stranger Tides but still seems out of place compared to the original trilogy. Curse of the Black Pearl is one of my all time favorite movies but I even enjoyed the two sequels.

These movies, along w Transformers and other franchises, seem to be made strictly to keep the money coming and there's a sense of indifference in the filmmaking.

@CaptDeadpool - the second one was a solid sequel and I also liked the existential craziness of the multiple Jacks in the third one. But then the third went listless and nonsensical and we've been watching a franchise as undead as it's characters ever since.

@BackwardGalaxy - third was a bit too packed with subplots, which is also my biggest complaint about DMTNT. Stranger Tides just seemed unnecessary and wasn't FUN. "Zombie henchmen" made no sense, each sequel just tries to duplicate the original while tweaking it just enough to attempt to appear new.
