1978 DOCTOR STRANGE Film To Receive Blu-Ray Release In Preparation For MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS

In anticipation of the (former) Sorcerer Supreme's upcoming theatrical adventure, Shout Factory has announced the Blu-ray release of Dr. Strange's first ever live action appearance.

With the much anticipated release of Multiverse of Madness drawing ever closer, fans of the mystic master have one more thing to look forward to with the home release of the 1978 TV movie Dr. Strange, starring Peter Hootan and the late Jessica Walters.

For many younger fans this will likely be the first time they've heard of this movie's existence, which took many liberties with the source material and made no qualms about changing whatever they saw fit from the comics. The 1978 movie-of-the-week saw Dr. Steven Strange portrayed as a psychiatrist rather than a surgeon, who is convinced by Walter's Morgan La Fey (posing as a mental patient) to learn the mystic arts in order to defend the earth from a pending invasion.

This is not the first time that Shout Factory has made the film available to the public, as it was released on DVD back in 2016 to match the theatrical debut of the first Doctor Strange. Fans picking up the Blu-ray will enjoy a high-def restoration and transfer of the footage, along with optional audio commentary from pop culture historian Russell Dyball and Panel Jumper podcast’s Cole Hornaday. The Blu-ray is light on special features beyond this, however.

Dr. Strange was created to serve as a movie-pilot for a planned series that would have aired as a part of the newly created CBS Marvel production block, which was also going to feature Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno's The Incredible Hulk, and Nicholas Hammond's The Amazing Spider-Man. Unfortunately for Writer/Director Philip DeGuere, the pilot was never ordered to series.

Will you be picking up a copy of Shout Factory's Dr. Strange to add to your Marvel multiverse collection?

@OldMan - I had to check if Peter Hooten is still alive and yes, he is and not even that old. 71. He even did a film role just 2017. He making a cameo in Multiverse of Madness feels kind of obvious when you think about it.

Who’s seen it?

@regularmovieguy - Was on Youtube for a while, which is where I saw it. It's like someone recorded their LSD hallucinations, but without a budget. I'm pretty sure the soundtrack, much like Strange's mustache, is stolen from porn.

Also Wong.

@TheMapleSyrup - Jessica Walter played the villain in this? Morgan Le Fay! Holy shit, that alone makes this worth seeing.

I’ve been saying for months that one of the TV characters from the 70-80’s era shows is going to be on the Illuminati/council thing.

It honestly wasn't terrible considering the 70s shows that were out at the time. It just premiered during a re-run of Roots. So the competition was just too steep for it to get the numbers it needed.

How about releasing a BluRay Collection of "The Marvel Classics" @ScreamFactory?
Aka. the Marvel films not treated to lovingly made remasters

Howard the Duck (1987), The Punisher (1989), Captain America (1990), The Fantastic Four (1994), Generation X (1996), Nick Fury (1998) & Man-Thing (2005). The "original MCU" lol
