DOCTOR STRANGE: Chiwetel Ejiofor Reveals Whether 'Baron Mordo' Is A Hero Or Villain

Set photos for Doctor Strange have shown Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Martian) accompanying Stephen Strange through Nepal, but is he a goodie or a baddie? The actor has now shed some light on that, offering up some very intriguing new details on his take on Baron Mordo...

While we now know that Mads Mikkelsen will be Doctor Strange's big bad (even if we don't know who exactly he's playing), where does that leave Karl Mordo? The Baron is trained by The Ancient One in the comic books, but when Stephen Strange discovers his plan to kill his mentor, a lifelong rivalry is created as a result. Will things play out on the big screen in a similar manner though? "In terms of his life with the Ancient One, it’s this long and intense relationship they have that’s just very deep and very connected," Chiwetel Ejiofor explained when asked by Entertainment Weekly about Mordo's ties to The Ancient One. "I think they both recognize in Strange this certain quality that they feel is going to be very useful in a situation they’re in — just by the nature of who he is, and the way that he operates, and the way his mind works, and the certain skill set and personality that he has. So, when they all meet, they realize that he’s somebody that can be plugged into this very surreal, interesting, sort of fascinating circumstance that they’re all in, and the dangers that they face. It becomes a process of assimilating him into their ways of life."

He sounds more like an ally than an enemy in that case, and it could be that Marvel will take a slow burn approach to turning Mordo into one of Strange's most fearsome foes. We likely won't find that out until next November, but when the actor was asked specifically if he's a hero or villain, Ejiofor responded: "Oh, he’s a very complex character that, really, I don’t think can be nailed down either way, you know. I guess it’s something to experience, is what I’d say..." Thoughts?

This whole no Wong casting, Baron Mordo not being the main villian, Mads playing the main villain while being described as awfully close to Baron Mordo, I'm just..............so God damn confused with the cast here. I like what they're doing, and I'm glad they're keeping it wrapped tightly, but its so frustrating to be left with so many questions(won't really matter once you actually see the movie considering all the questions will be answered so my frustration has nothing to do with the quality or creative choices.

Actually think Strange will be sort of his "Sidekick" through this movie with hints of Mordo failed character.

i think they are setting mordo up, he wants power if hes like the comics so i imagine he's with the ancient one to gain more power then maybe at the end of dr strange we could have a after credits scene with him planning to unleash dormammu

@Crabnado
I actually only seen parts of The Prestige and at a very young age. But I do agree that there should be something left to the imagination, my confusion mainly comes from the fact that this is an adaptation of comic book characters, so for me, as a Strange fan I thought I'd be able to pick up on who's playing who. Like, now I'm thinking they may have amalgamated the character of Wong with whoever Chiwetel is playing, which raises some concerns for me, but at the same time I don't know if that is even the case. So, mainly I just want to know who is who out of a comfort thing, not necessarily as an impatient fanboy who demands more info, I do hope they preserve the surprise and wonder for the film. As you said I should be surprised, I'm hoping that's the case, though with the buzz surrounding the film I think that's what we might get.

The track record with Marvel villains strongly suggest the villains will be weak, boring, and undeveloped. IT may take a million miracles for these villains to turn out great. Hopefully they are not wasted with the actors they have gotten.

Over the course of the movie, I can see Mordo developing a deep resentment towards the Ancient One and her/his tutelage over Strange becoming Sorcerer Supreme as being the motivation towards him turning towards Dormammu for some payback.

So he's a wild card then.
