DOCTOR STRANGE Finds A Director In Scott Derrickson

After shortlist surfaced months ago, Marvel has tapped a director best known for supernatural horror flicks to bring the Sorcerer Supreme, aka Doctor Strange, to the big-screen. Check it out!

Marvel Studios' Ant-Man may be without a director and still planned for release next year, but that hasn't stopped development on the other films that the Disney-owned company has slated for its "Phase 3" lineup. According to Variety and other sources, horror director Scott Derrickson has been tapped to help finally bring Doctor Strange to the big-screen. "Negotiations are still early," reveals trade magazine, "but sources say he is Marvel's choice and deal should be struck shortly." Derrickson's directing credits include Hellraiser: Inferno (2000), The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005), The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008), and Sinister (2012), with Deliver Us From Evil set to hit theaters next month. Even though the filmmaker also co-wrote those horror flicks, The Hollywood Reporter suggests not only that Marvel Studios is still seeking a writer to rewrite the Doctor Strange script, but also that Kung Fu Panda duo screenwriters Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger are still in the mix.

While Scott Derrickson was the last to be revealed as a contender, the director was selected over Mark Andrews (Brave), Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair), Dean Israelite (Welcome to Yesterday), and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), among many others whom
Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige confirmed meeting back when he was promoting Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

For years, Kevin Feige has expressed interest in bringing Doctor Stephen Strange to the silver-screen, and finally introducing the Socerer Supreme's magic into Marvel's Cinematic Universe. The producer even allowed a direct reference to the character in Captain America: The Winter Soldier which was thought up by directors Joe and Anthony Russo. Anyhow, expect Marvel to officially announce Doctor Strange at San Diego Comic-Con next month, if not sooner. And given that Disney has 2 untitled Marvel Studios flicks, after Captain America 3, scheduled for release on July 8, 2016 and May 5, 2017, the Socerer Supreme will likely get the former date. What do you think?

this guy has directed nothing but horror movies, a good chunk of them are shit too. (day the earth stood still remake, and Hellraiser: Inferno, and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Sure sinister wasn't too bad, but that was due to the scriptwriter carlye (or however his name is spelled) from Spill.com. I wouldn't say this is your best choice marvel. But whatever

So is Dr Strange actually going to use magic or is he going to use some psychics thingy ma-bober? I know they already established magic as an advanced form of science, but I'm still hoping for some actual magic to be used in the MCU. I mean look at Thor, the guy has no magic and his battles are rather boring in the MCU (excluding the battle at Jotunheim).

DEUSEX-these are quotes from Feige about this film..he talked about this around when Winter Soldier was coming out..

Are you watching the Cosmos series? That’s magic, [the quantum physics]. It’s unbelievable. If somebody knew how to tap into that stuff, what’s the difference between that and magic?

You don’t get into it in Harry Potter, but if a scientist went to Hogwarts he’d find out how some of that stuff is happening! We’re not going to spend a lot of time on that, but there will be some of that. And particularly for a character like Strange, who goes from a man of science to a man of faith and who traverses both worlds. And sometimes there won’t be an answer! Sometimes he’ll want an answer - “How is this happening?!” - and nothing.

Doctor Strange also has to be weirder as a movie. The Marvel films have so far had something approaching a house style - even Winter Soldier, which has its own look, fits into the larger Marvel aesthetic. But Feige sees Doctor Strange being quite different.

“Doctor Strange needs to be a Ditko/Kubrick/Miyazaki/The Matrix mind-trip,” he said. With all the recent news about directors being courted for the film this is interesting - who will be able to deliver for Marvel the kind of mind-trip Feige wants while also making a movie that will hit a wide audience?

The Day the Earth Stood Still was a terrible movie but Marvel keeps the director on a pretty tight leash so this will probably be a good movie.
