DOCTOR STRANGE Star Tilda Swinton Reacts To Kevin Feige's Comments About Ancient One Casting Regrets

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently shared his regrets about not casting an Asian actor as the Ancient One, and actress Tilda Swinton has now responded to those comments with her own take...

When it was revealed that white actress Tilda Swinton would play the Ancient One in Doctor Strange, there was quite a bit of backlash online because a noteworthy Asian character was being "whitewashed." At the time, Marvel Studios issued a statement explaining that many people had held this mantle and, in this movie, the character was actually Celtic.

It was clearly an effort on the studio's part to avoid any Asian stereotypes or tropes, but Kevin Feige recently admitted that he regrets the choice. "[Was] there any other way to both not fall into the cliché and cast an Asian actor?’" he pondered. "And the answer to that, of course, is yes."

During an interview with Variety, Swinton was made aware of Feige's comments and said she's "very, very grateful that he said that."

"I remember at the time having a question mark in my own mind, and being attendant to the public response to the idea that a Scottish woman will be playing this character, and being aware that there was no resistance at all — there was widespread welcome — which shifted at a certain point, for very good reasons with which I had an enormous amount of sympathy."

Swinton went on to say that she realised a "conscious" wave of criticism started to "righteously" grow as time passed, noting that "The audience feels ever more empowered to contribute to the narrative and to feel heard within the narrative, and that’s a really healthy social development."

This was a blunder on Marvel Studios' part, but their intentions were good - if somewhat ill-advised - and the fact that it's not a mistake they would readily repeat is obviously welcomed (especially with a movie like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings around the corner).

Swinton did reprise the role of the Ancient One in Avengers: Endgame, but we're not banking on seeing more of that interpretation of the character in the MCU moving forward...

It is nice that she doesn't see it negatively.

Even though they changed the race/gender, her Ancient One is still one of my favorite heroes.

@UXASIS - That's because she's a great actor, I think people would've been more angry if she was bad like Jared Leto's joker or jesse eisenberg's lex luthor.

I like Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery alot too despite the divisiveness.

Really they basically created an original version of the character and it was done to avoid Fu Machu stuff.

Huh, same happened with The Mandarin.....strange when studios try to avoid an issue, creating another issue and people didnt really care about the issue originally being avoided.

Indeed. And Kevin has made another blunder again by quickly announcing Tchalla will not be recast. That was one of the most stupid things I've heard in movie history, and he will regret it.

Even Chadwick, in his grave, will want someone else to take the mantle. It's totally ridiculous.

He doesn't own the part, and I, on the other hand, would like to see more of Tchala in action.. So stupid.

@THEKENDOMAN - Killing off T'Challa if that's the plan for the sequel is way worse than recasting Boseman, may he rest in peace. The character's legacy must live on the screen. Suri is fine and all but we need a T'Challa.

@Kingdork - Donald Glover or Lakeith Stanfield ought to play T'Challa

@AwesomePromoz - nope and nope. I vote 100% Godfrey. He's intelligent, charismatic, has the untapped "it" factor and not known in the elite Hollywood circles. Not to mention he's 5'11" and his parents are Nigerian. I wnat to see him take the mantle. Penny, penny.

"The audience feels ever more empowered to contribute to the narrative and to feel heard within the narrative, and that’s a really healthy social development."

She had me up until “HEALTHY SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT”
This is 80% true versus the 20%, where the latter goes far beyond what is considered socially healthy by sending death threats or constantly going out of their way to destroy other films with bad reviews simply because they didn’t get what THEY WANTED. And there have been numerous ways of expressing their distaste just so they can feel like they have control of what is going to happen with content that is put out.
I don’t think its healthy where an individual gets so involved in a matter that allows them to feel like they can alter situations with malicious intent and it empowers them to continue with these methods.

@Demigods - Of course they can't piss off China (millions and millions of dollars). They "are" a business.

@Demigods - both of them are making it sound like there was anything more reasonable they could do. They couldn't make him Tibetan or else lose out on the Chinese market, and making a Tibetan character Chinese would've been ridiculously more insensitive considering what's going on.
