2014 was quite the year for Doctor Strange, with Joaquin Phoenix at one point the frontrunner to play the Sorcerer Supreme for Marvel Studios. However, lengthy contract obligations seemingly led to him departing the project, and Marvel ultimately turned to fan-favourite choice (and one of the first actors to emerge as being in contention), Benedict Cumberbatch.
