Captain Carter Actress Hayley Atwell Says DOCTOR STRANGE Sequel Isn't "The Trajectory That I See For [Her]"

What If...? star Hayley Atwell has addressed her future as Peggy Carter in the MCU, admitting that Captain Carter's gory demise in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness isn't what she envisioned.

Hayley Atwell first played Peggy Carter in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, and while she was an immediate hit with fans, no one predicted how much staying power the character would have.

As well as starring in ABC's short-lived Agent Carter TV series, we saw Peggy in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and as an elderly woman in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She died offscreen in Captain America: Civil War, only to return in Avengers: Endgame thanks to time travel.

However, the biggest development for Peggy came in the animated What If...? series on Disney+. There, we met her Variant, Captain Carter, a hero who took the Super Soldier Serum in place of Steve Rogers. A second Variant of that character showed up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as a member of The Illuminati, though she wasn't quite as heroic.

Talking to Digital Spy, Atwell addressed her possible future as Peggy in the MCU.

"It’s so funny, because, you know, I did that 10 years ago, and I love her because I love the people, and you never know," she started before talking about being "cut in half with a frisbee" by the Scarlet Witch. The actress added, "It was definitely not, you know, the trajectory that I see for Peggy. I would definitely like her to have more to do."

"It depends on what Marvel, and what the audiences, want," Atwell said of what might come next. "I’m a custodian of her. Compared to the rest of my career and everything I’ve done or my stage work and doing Mission: Impossible now and all the diversity of roles I’ve played, and the diversity that I get to explore, and to be able to play more complex roles and villains and lots of different things - she is not mine anymore."

"She lives in the world of people that have taken her into their heart. And that’s beautiful. But it’s kind of like: yeah, you can’t control the impact a particular role has on the rest of the world."

We're confident that there is more Peggy in store for Atwell moving forward, while it's already been confirmed she'll be part of What If...? season 2 for a fresh spin on Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Beyond that, it would be nuts if Marvel Studios didn't include the live-action Captain Carter in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars

Well good Thing that’s a variant and probably not the one from what if

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Correct me if I'm wrong but they didn't explicitly say which universe Cap ended up in, only that he retired and gave away the shield. Maybe he's shacking up with Captain Carter lol

@UncleHarm1 - you are correct they did not. He just went to a universe with Peggy

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Peggy's replaceable with another Peggy. How romantic...

She died twice and wants another go?

Joking

I see her popping up again for an epilogue (pre-epilogue???) of Captain America's story where he stayed back in time or alternate earth (whatever they decided on) to show some insight into that relationship.

They can pick that up at anytime before we see old Steve so that can happened whenever the actor decides to come back, as he’ll always be the appropriate age. That would be a nice way to properly cap their story. Endgame’s ending also worked just a nice.

I can definitely see another variant show up in Secret Wars, since that movie is gonna be a variant galore

I’m guessing secret wars would be the time to bring Captain Carter back. It’d be really interesting to have her square off with Steve Rogers. They could fight over who’s butt looks better in them jeans.

I wish I could say her cameo was awesome, but it wasn't. They screwed the pooch up and down Broadway with that film.

@bobevanz - They sure did. They had ample opportunities to really explore and introduce the multiverse but they wasted them.

I'm not even sure what the point of it was. To me, it's really basically just all fanservice and no meaning to it, same with the other stuff.

I've never understood why Marvel drug their feet SO much with Peggy Carter/Captain Carter. With such a strong diversity push, Atwell's Carter was the perfect go-forward chance to build a franchise around a wildly popular woman in the MCU...and they've fumbled the ball. They clearly had no idea how to develop the character - especially after the show failed, which was itself series-long proof of exactly that.

@Deckacards - As much as I like Iger taking over the reigns of Chapek I blame that blunder of Peggy on him although Feige is to blame a little but at the time Iger was the one overseeing the tv side of things for Marvel so he gets to bear the brunt of the blame here.
KiddSoul
KiddSoul - 12/5/2022, 2:05 PM
@Deckacards - They could've easily added Uninon Jack maybe as her father? And pass the Captain Carter mantle as her own thing and build that franchise around the character as you said. But with so many Captain's don't know if that could oversaturate things. Yet it's the Multiverse after all, though.

TyrantBossMedia - 12/5/2022, 3:51 PM
@Deckacards - I agree. I really liked Peggy Carter. She was well developed and organically so.
I enjoyed the first season of her show then they moved it to California and it lost something.
I really wish they would have spent more time with her character.

I wouldn't mind a revisitation of her series on Disney+ just revamped to coincide with a Howling Commandos show.

I dont really like the character of Captain Carter. For one she was introduced in a what if cartoon and pops up in the movies out of nowhere (no reason for her to be in the illuminati, the worlds greatest minds) and it feels cheap like anyone can just be a superhero, like when are we going to get Darcy flying around?
