DOCTOR STRANGE 2 Director Sam Raimi On Who The Real Villain Of The Sequel Is - SPOILERS

There's been a lot of speculation that Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch will emerge as the villain of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Sam Raimi has now provided some answers (kinda!).

Ever since WandaVision concluded and we learned that Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch would have a substantial role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there's been speculation that Wanda Maximoff will "break bad" and emerge as the true villain of the piece.

The trailers do appear to back this up, but if comments from Sam Raimi are any indication, things won't be quite so black and white in the upcoming sequel.

Some may feel the following is a little spoilery!

When asked by Fandango who he considers to be the villain of Multiverse of Madness ("is it Wanda? Is it Mordo? Is it Strange himself? Is it the multiverse? Is it all of the above?"), the legendary Evil Dead director gave a somewhat broad, but telling response.

"Well, there's iterations of our characters throughout the multiverse. So, if I were to say Strange ... I'm not really supposed to answer this question, but I might be saying altered Strange. Same with Wanda and Mordo. But I would say, at different times, all of the above."

In the same interview, Raimi confirmed that we'll see an "altered version" of the Scarlet Witch, so it sounds like the evil Wanda we meet in the film is most likely going to be a Variant, and not the established MCU hero we know and love.

This does contradict some of what we've been led to believe from the various leaks that have found their way online, but it does make more sense than Marvel Studios turning a beloved character into a ruthless villain! Would it be a bit of a cop-out, though? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual spot.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stühlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. The film is directed by Sam Raimi, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Eric Hauserman Carroll and Jamie Christopher serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Michael Waldron.

The Doctor Strange sequel releases in U.S. theaters on May 6, 2022.

Guess I can still expect Westview Wanda (either a nightmare version or variant) to be the villain then. Do look forward to what Evil Strange's business is gonna be though

I've played enough survival horror games to have sussed out the true villain.

The runtime given by the cinema is 132 minutes NOT 126.

I bet that it's more complicated than that and it's all because of each one of them and their actions (Strange, Wanda, Mordo etc) and whatever it is that they could need from America Chavez. All of that could be adding to the chaos the Multiverse is going through.

Wanda but her kids situation it will be pointed out several times.

Still, if she does all the nasty things the leaks said I REALLY hope they treat her as a proper villain, unlike they did in Wandavision. There's only so much you can empathize to someone who does evil.

Pretty big jump in this article to seemingly conclude that "altered" will always mean variant. "Altered" seems deliberately broad here - maybe variant, maybe possessed by a variant, possessed/influenced by something/someone else (Darkhold?), etc.

I don't think we can safely assume the plot leak will be 1:1 like it was for No Way Home and Eternals because the entirety of this film was reshot for God knows why. And it was extensive enough that the entire narrative or third act may be completely different. Hopefully they walked back evil Wanda because it would spit in the face of what she learned via Wandavision. She's already been the villain and she's now isolated and alone because of it.

@McMurdo - "the entirety of this film was reshot"?

@JonC - 6 weeks of reshoots 6 days a week

@McMurdo - That isn't the entire movie being reshot, when filming usually lasts for at least 3 months in Marvel films. 6 weeks won't even be 1/3 of the movie.
