DOCTOR STRANGE 2 Writer Says Namor Wasn't A Member Of The Illuminati Because Marvel "Has Other Plans For Him"

One member of The Illuminati from the comics was conspicuous by his absence in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and writer Michael Waldron has now revealed why Namor was off limits...

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Stephen Strange and America Chavez find themselves captured by The Illuminati when they travel to an alternate reality. This version of the team was quite similar to the line-up in the comics, with a couple of notable exceptions.

Captains Marvel and and Carter stood in for Tony Stark and Namor, while Master Mordo took the deceased Doctor Strange's place alongside Black Bolt, Reed Richards, and Professor Xavier. Screenwriter Michael Waldron has previously revealed that he did ask Kevin Feige about bringing in Tom Cruise to play an Iron Man Variant, and it sounds like he also enquired about the Sub Mariner!

[We] talked about him, because he’s certainly an original member of the Illuminati," Waldron tells Variety. "But I think Marvel has other plans for him in the MCU. And so he didn’t make his way in this particular movie."

Does this confirm that Namor's will debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever? Not necessarily, but the character has been rumored to be introduced in the sequel for quite a while, with Narcos Mexico actor Tenoch Huerta reportedly taking on the role. There's been no official word, but reliable leaks have indicated that the story will revolve around Wakanda going to war with the forces of Atlantis.

Even if Namor doesn't show up in Wakanda Forever, Waldron's comments obviously indicate that Marvel Studios has something involving the hot-headed anti-hero in the works.

@NinnesMBC - Can't wait to see it. If the love and thunder trailer has reinforced anything it that Marvel likes putting iconic scenes from comic runs in films.

Are you listening? Anybody? DC?

So, does that mean they also have no plans for JK as Reed or Stewart as Professor X moving forward? One can only hope.

@inkniron - I think Stewart will do one more as Xavier, at the minimum.

@inkniron - I tend to agree with most that it seems this may be the last time Stewart plays the role. But given how far away we are still from Fantastic 4, I think there's still plenty of hope for Krasinski, especially after the positive response to his appearance here. If Namor is in fact showing up in Wakanda Forever, and it's coming out so soon, I get why they'd want to save that surprise for that already uphill-fighting movie.

Probably won't happen, but I like the idea of Luke Evans as Namor.

I understand leaving out Namor as he's coming in BP 2, but not having an Iron Man variant (whether RDJ or another actor) was a missed opportunity.

An Iron Man variant should have been the easiest to put in this movie. Especially considering they went out of their way to introduce Mr. Fantastic and bring back Professor X and Black Bolt (freaking Black Bolt, man). Plus they had the Iron Legion drones too.

Just makes no sense, they should have replaced Maria with Tony if it was an issue of too many members.

@dagenspear - uh yeah, that's why I said replace Maria with Tony if that was an issue.

@Kurne - I don't think there's a comparable budget for that. Maria and the actress that plays her, I don't think necessarily has the same price tage.

But they are a multiverse illuminati, meaning they can be introduced into the proper mcu

Do think X, Black Bolt and Fantastic should have gotten mcu introductions first before multivetse variants showed up but what, does this mean we arent getting them in the proper mcu?

Unless thats the case, dont see how a version of namor showing up would effect any plans
Kurne

@dracula - I gotta say, its weird that Strange met variants of Mr. Fantastic, Professor X and Black Bolt before meeting them in the main MCU.

I hope this doesn't mean they don't exist in the main MCU, like how Oscorp/Norman doesn't exist in the MCU either (still weird that they did that).
dagenspear
dagenspear - 5/11/2022, 1:40 AM
@Kurne - I maintain my perception that Norman Osborn from 2002 would only really know to just go to places and see if they're there, and when he doesn't see Oscorp where it would be in his universe, says it doesn't exist.

But I do agree how that was done, doesn't really make a lot of sense, to me.

The way this comes off, it makes it seem like Marvel doesn't have plans for the Illuminati in 616.

My theory was that he was the 7th empty seat, but him being Namor, decided not to show up for the meeting.
SKetCH

@comicfan100 - I've been under the impression the 7th seat belonged to Strange. Ya know, before they killed him.
I'm not sure why everyone has been trying to figure out the "missing" member when we were fully given seven members of the 838 Illuminati. 🤷🏻‍♂️
