DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS: Benedict Cumberbatch Seemingly Reveals New Reshoots Took Place

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness reportedly went through significant reshoots. Going by new comments from Benedict Cumberbatch, it seems the movie just went through additional photography.

Making superhero blockbusters is a tricky endeavor, and there are times in which an added amount of effort is necessary to make the final product as good as possible. That's apparently been the case with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Marvel Studios' upcoming sequel attracted a lot of attention late last year when it was reported that it would go through "significant" reshoots. The additional photography was reported to have come to an end three months later.

According to some new comments from the film's star, however, it seems the movie still isn't quite finished. Benedict Cumberbatch attended the 2022 BAFTA Awards (where his film, The Power of the Dog, won Best Picture). It was during an interview at the event that the actor seemingly revealed that new reshoots for Multiverse of Madness had taken place.

When the interviewer joked that not everyone could live in L.A. all the time like him, Cumberbatch replied: "Neither can I, but I've been having a very nice time there doing reshoots for Doctor Strange." The interviewer then asked him if that was what he had been doing, to which Cumberbatch replied, "It is. Yeah."

The actor could have been referring to the reshoots that were revealed in November 2021, but his wording appears to indicate the additional photography was much more recent.

If reshoots did indeed take place, it's not that surprising. Earlier in 2022, the film's director, Sam Raimi, indicated that, while he believed they were done, he was willing to go back for more if the situation called for it:

"I wish I knew the answer to that question. [...] I think we're done, but we just cut everything. We're just starting to test the picture, and we'll find out if there's anything that's got to be picked up. If something's unclear or [there's] another improvement I can make in this short amount of time left, I'll do it. One thing I know about the Marvel team is they won't stop. They’ll keep pushing it until it's as close to being great as it could."

While it's unusual for a Marvel Studios film to go through so much apparent restructuring (publicly, at least), the House of Ideas is no stranger to tweaking projects up until the last minute. The Avengers, for example, famously had its Shawarma-centered post-credits scene shot after the movie's premiere. Similarly, Spider-Man: No Way Home underwent some special-effects improvements following its release.

As Kevin Feige explained during a talk at the New York Film Academy in 2019, reshoots and restructuring are an integral part of Marvel Studios' creative process (starting at the 12:30 mark):

"Reshoots are key to our films, starting with [Iron Man], because it's great. And we always say, 'We're smart filmmakers at Marvel, but we're not geniuses.' And the best way to give notes on a movie is to watch the movie. So, we make the movie and then watch it and go, 'Oh, yeah. No, that's not right. That doesn't work.' And [we have] a system now that can be quite precise and quite efficient, in sometimes one day, sometimes fifteen days, sometimes more, to go in and continue to make the movie the best it can be. [...] When we schedule our films, we schedule the production period and then we schedule the additional-photography period, for, say, two or three months after the director's cut's delivered. And, people don't ask us anymore because they know it's the system, but they would go, 'Oh, what will you be reshooting, then?' And we'd go, 'We don't know. If we knew, we wouldn't do it.'"

As such, the Doctor Strange sequel (seemingly) undergoing reshoots again should not be a cause for concern, so much as a sign that Marvel Studios is working to make the film live up to its high-quality standards.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will arrive in theaters on May 6, 2022.

No, I did not know that this movie went through 6 weeks of reshoots 6 days of week. Thank you for letting me know that this movie went through 6 weeks of reshoots 6 days a week. Clearly this movie that went through 6 weeks of reshoots 6 days a week is a hot piping mess, as is any movie that went through 6 weeks of reshoots 6 days a week.

F#ck any movie that went through 6 weeks of reshoots 6 days a week!

No wait you got it wrong. This movie actually went through 6 weeks of reshoots 6 days a week and not 6 weeks of reshoots 6 days a week like you mentioned.
I can understand that this is easily misinterpreted. But next time keep in mind that this movie went through 6 weeks of reshoots 6 days a week.

This movie is definitely [frick]ed because it went over the limit of 6 weeks of reshoots 5 days a week. The producers should have kept that in mind, but alas!
It's too late now

@DrReedRichards - 6 weeks of reshoots 6 days a week. That's a new movie. I'm like @DoubleD but instead of shitting on box office numbers, I'm the reshoot guy.

@McMurdo -

That's a new indie low budget movie. Not a production of that caliber, and certainly not one in the MCU. Unless, once again, you want it to be for whatever personal reason.

@DrReedRichards - the only personal vendetta I have is regarding authorship. I wanted Derricksons horror sequel. I love Raimi and adored Loki, think Waldron can write anything he wants at this point. I'm not sure It matters, their voices in regards to the final product. But that's how shit goes under Feige

...but you do have a personal vendetta against (part of) this movie, which is precisely my point.

@DrReedRichards - I was using your vernacular. Being facetious. I dont want it to fail if thats what your implying. I don't think it stands a chance of failing whether it's frankensteins monster or not.
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 3/14/2022, 11:04 AM

I'm not implying it. I'm directly stating it.

@McMurdo -

No, you're not. You're saying you're not expecting it to fail, realistically speaking given the MCU's scope. Not whether or not you want it to, which your comment about authorship makes pretty clear your stance on.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 3/14/2022, 11:53 AM
@DrReedRichards - no I'm saying it's an impossibility that it will fail.

So they're still shooting or they just finished? Seems a little late for me, also now I'm willing to bet we get Garfield and/or Tobey once again. Too much nostalgia ruins it

The optimistic side of me wants to believe this is merely to add more mind melting cameos and not because certain parts of the film ain’t working.

@TheLobster - Or, it's because certain parts of the film ain't working that they're adding more mind melting cameos, lol

Comicmoviejunki - 3/14/2022, 8:32 AM
@TheLobster - why is if they are fixing the parts that weren't working bad? That makes no sense. Would you rather them leave it "not working "?
McMurdo
McMurdo - 3/14/2022, 10:45 AM
@TheLobster - when Benedict comes out with a slight of hand comment about the sequel and you add on not just reshoots, but RESHOOTS. well. Fingers [frick]ing crossed. I love Raimi and Waldron so I don't want this to fail. But I'm not gonna pretend like it's no a legit concern either.

To a MUCH smaller scale, this is exactly the process I used to make killer party Playlists back in my college dorm room DJ days. Make it ahead of time and listen to it through a few times, and save time to make corrections. People have raved about my playlists. Ah my glory days lol

Like stated in the article, Sam Raimi said in January that he might do some extra reshoots if necessary to make the movie better. So, it seems like that's the case with this new statement from Benedict.

Big production, big budget... they were shooting Avengers: Endgame basically til the last moment. It's standard practice at this point.

Nothing to worry about; just a reason to get more excited since the trailers looked beyond amazing already!
