Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be directed by Sam Raimi, but Scott Derrickson was originally set to take the helm of the sequel before supposed "creative differences" led to his departure.

The filmmaker did a great job with 2016's Doctor Strange, so the fact that he chose to walk away from the follow-up definitely came as a surprise. Since then, we've heard reports that Marvel Studios' decision to move away from Derrickson's proposed horror vibe in favour of the Multiverse is what led to him leaving the project, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has now addressed that head on.

"There's been some thought that that was the creative difference with Scott and Marvel, and it was not," Feige said when Empire Magazine (via Slash Film) asked if Derrickson's hopes to tell a Doctor Strange horror story was the problem. "Because we love that idea. The intention was that Strange would guide us into a much creepier side of the world."

The belief is that the filmmaker wanted to focus on Nightmare and tell a more self-contained story with his Doctor Strange sequel. However, after WandaVision, Loki, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, it's become a much bigger movie, and we'd bet on that being the main reason for Derrickson's departure.

With Raimi at the helm, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is in safe hands and the latest trailer proved Marvel Studios isn't shying away from embracing some classic horror movie imagery. Hopefully, Derrickson will share his take on these "creative differences" when he does the rounds to promote his next project, The Black Phone, this June.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in theaters on May 6.

Don't get me wrong, I love Sam Raimi and I'm glad he's back behind the wheel of a superhero film, but still a bit concerned that this might be too overstuffed with easter eggs and cameos galore. I'll always favor a more self-contained story as opposed to something that feels like it's biting off more than it can chew.

@JesseCuster - we shall see if it’s another justice league scenario I personally want horror version like to see that for once marvel get dark and serious once in while everything needs be light hearted and full comedy all time with them

@JesseCuster - Too much fan service without any real substance obviously makes for a bad movie. But "Steven Strange tracks down Mordo and they shoot magic at each other for 90 minutes" sounds boring as hell.

@JesseCuster - i say a good movie is a good. Rather it's small in cast or large. The Batman was contained, yet trash.

It's not about size, tone or budget. Just make a good movie

@JesseCuster - I get what he’s trying to say.. A film could be great regardless of scale ofcourse we all know this.. Doctor Strange 2 could have been a small scale sequel about him against Baron Mordo and that could have been great, but this crazy overstuffed multiverse thing can also be great.. and obviously they can both equally be bad but it just depends on how it’s handled, writing wise and with a good director.. it could work. We just have to wait and see.

I'd like to see Scott Derrickson return in some capacity. Perhaps for a horror-influenced Ghost Rider movie?

Doctor Strange taking on Nightmare sounded great. Especially the horror angle. Don't know what we're getting now though, or even who the villain is

Derrickson seemed to indicate that he didn't want to go into production without a finalized script. The idea that he left because Feige didn't want to do horror was just the silly narratives people fall back on when it comes to Marvel. One look at the trailer lets you know horror wasn't the issue

Doesn't that contradict what Scottt Derickson said himself? So basically, instead of shining light on the split, the cause is now even less clear...?
DalekCraigWasson
DalekCraigWasson - 3/16/2022, 7:27 AM
@Shroombeast - No, Derrickson never said why he left, but everything he has alluded to has been about Marvel announcing release dates regardless of where the film is in development and bringing on new writers every time there's a bump in the road (this last one, BTW, is also explicitly what Edgar Wright said when asked why he left Ant-Man).

The problem is "Marvel doesn't like horror" or "Wright didn't want it to be in the MCU" are quick, easy to explain, and easy to understand. "Marvel is a meat making factory that places deadlines over creativity" is a lot more complicated.

Though I absolutely loved the last trailer, I don’t have high hopes for this movie given the change in directors , the number of characters and many reshoots. It’s seemingly impossible to make a good movie with all those challenges. But then again, Marvel has taken difficult and theoretically impossible-to-make-good films such as Endgame, NWH, Infinity War and Avengers and made them crazy amazing, so we’ll see on MoM.

Itwasme - 3/15/2022, 7:50 PM
@2050 - to be fair, I'm not sure reshoots in this case equals changes. Much of the reshoots seemed to be due to scheduling issues that were complicated by COVID. This can lead to its own set of issues - namely an inconsistent feel - but I think without the pandemic this movie would probably have just been like any other Marvel production where they intentionally have reshoots.

Not saying it's going to be great or anything. I loved the trailer, but we never really know until its released.

Typhoon20 - 3/15/2022, 7:04 PM
So Feige didn't explain anything ? Which makes me think the rumors of Derrickson leaving because he wanted a Doctor Strange focused character driven/horror element with Nightmare as the main villain whereas Feige wanted to use Doctor Strange as a stepping stone to introduce other characters in a big event film turns out to be mostly true.

I'm gonna be honest here. I don't know if Raimi was the right choice. But I know Derrickson wasn't. He's a decent horror director but nothing particularly great. You need a great director for Strange and Derrickson wasn't it imo. I don't think Raimi is either, he's too campy and even though he is a great horror director i'm not sure he's the right director for Strange. Saimi was great 2 decades ago but not sure if he's done anything great lately and I'm afraid he's past his prime. I don't even know if he cares that much about the character seeing as all he cares about is Spiderman or Batman.

Derrickson already said before that there is no ill will between the company and him and that he hoped to maybe work with them again.
