DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS: Kevin Feige Says Movie Will Make EVIL DEAD II Fans "Very Happy"

Marvel President Kevin Feige has doubled down on past remarks that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will embrace filmmaker Sam Raimi's horror routes, teasing a connection to Evil Dead II.

As we head deeper into Phase 4, it's becoming clear that Marvel Studios isn't shying away from tackling some riskier, edgier forms of storytelling. Moon Knight quite clearly has a very distinct horror vibe, and while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness promises to take us to other worlds, Sam Raimi being at the helm all but guarantees the sequel will head down some scary new MCU avenues.

During a recent interview with Empire Online, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explained that they hired Raimi for the movie because they "want it to be a Sam Raimi movie." He adds, "We would give notes like, 'This action is cool – you’re competing with Avengers and Spider-Man, no problem – but don’t forget the Sam Raimi parts.'"

Most intriguing, though, was the promise that, "You will see just how Sam Raimi it is, in ways that will make fans of Evil Dead II very happy."

We have to assume this is a reference to Marvel Zombie Variants of Doctor Strange and the Scarlet Witch factoring into in the sequel, though there have been conflicting opinions on what's going on there (Strange, at least, definitely appears to be undead).

It's been nearly a decade since Raimi released a movie (2013's underrated Oz The Great And Powerful), and Feige admits that he was unsure he could convince the filmmaker to make his big screen return. "Our executive producer, Eric Carroll, and Richie Palmer [producer] were calling around to see who was interested, and Sam’s agent said, 'What about Sam Raimi?'"

"We thought, 'That would be incredible, but there’s no chance of that.' But he wanted to come in and meet. And in the first meeting, it was amazing to reconnect with him, and see his enthusiasm to jump back into this world." Raimi, meanwhile, admits "I have missed directing" and notes that he's "thrilled to be working with my old friend Kevin Feige" (they collaborated on the Spider-Man trilogy when Feige was still rising through the ranks of what would one day become Marvel Studios).

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be released in theaters on May 6.

I'm very happy to see Raimi return, and I really hope the reviews and people are at least kind to him at the very least. I want to keep him making movies. And I want more Bruce Campbell cameos.

I love Evil Dead.
But I hate Marvel zombies.

@eGGtheGreat - Thats cool, because the Marvel Zombies episode of What If was nothing like the Marvel Zombies comics.

But I have a feeling that Raimi is about to make the Marvel Zombies come off a lot like Deadites.

@eGGtheGreat - Understood. I wasn't blown away by it. It had a fee good episodes, but that's it. And the Marvel Zombies episode was so different from the comics that I felt like it was a disservice.

@eGGtheGreat - Dude you have no interest in any Disney properties, you don't want to give your money to Disney but you keep commenting "I don't have any interest in this" on every Disney related article! You sure you ain't obsessed over the Mouse?

@TheSuperMex - my advice, watch Evil Dead 2 then Army Of Darkness, then if you are curious watch the first Evil Dead.

Evil Dead 2 is the weirdest thing ever, because... well basically Sam and his friends and Bruce made Evil Dead on a budget. While making Evil Dead they learned a lot about how to make a better Evil Dead. So they got some financial backing and decided to remake the same film with the same crew and same actor playing Ash, going to a cabin and getting haunted by demons. But this time they didn't want to make a 100% serious horror film, they found their style which added comedy and slap stick and campy qualities to the horror, and they made the same movie but dialed up to 11! But instead of calling it some new to replace the old version, like maybe "The Evil Dead" or "The New Evil Dead" or "EV1L D3AD" or whatever.... or just EVIL DEAD and pretend the original attempt never happened... they decided instead to call it Evil Dead 2.

So people watching the series the first time have to sit through and inferior version of the film to then start Evil Dead 2 and get confused because it starts almost shot for shot like the same thing you just watched and it's only a few years apart but it's the same story and cabin and you feel so confused.... until you Google it lol

So I say just watch Evil Dead 2 from the start, it's the better version of the story, and it leads directly into Army of Darkness which is a must see classic. Then go watch Ash VS Evil Dead the series, it's 3 seasons and is great! Then once you know the full story of Ash and love Bruce Campbell, go back and watch a super young Bruce learn to act on screen in Evil Dead 1. Once you know Ash, watching ED1 is like a museum piece, it's so fascinating.

And once you see how Evil Dead 1 tries to take the story seriously, go watch THE EVIL DEAD, the reboot which is 100% modern horror and serious.

@ElricReturns - you make me want to give the series a watch sooner than later. Is the Evil Dead remake canon or just in its own universe?
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 3/17/2022, 4:20 PM
@TheSuperMex - it's "separate", but isn't. There are very strong hints they are connected I won't full on spoil, I feel they are 100% confirmed connected, but I'll get into that only if you want me to.

Also there are plans for more Evil Dead universe stuff in the future which may more solidly solidify the connection.

I'd say stick around for the after credits of The Evil Dead reboot.

This is a fun gorey universe, if you like that sorta thing lol
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 3/17/2022, 4:26 PM
@TheSuperMex - some folks like to theorize Evil Dead 1 is the story as it actually happened in all its cold brutal horror, and Evil Dead 2 is the story how Ash perceived it,as the cabin and demons drive him more and more insane until he becomes a badass, chainsaw handed, shotgun boomin badass who kills deadites for breakfast like a badass.

SAM RAIMI has finally directed another movie after 7 long years. Deserves all the support.

@BlackBeltJones - that’s the only reason I’m worried about the movie. He can be rusty. Plus I heard his Oz movie wasn’t that good.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 3/17/2022, 1:09 PM
@TheSuperMex - I would say the issues with it was script, acting and story wise. The writing is very lazy. Franco was totally miscast and everyone else is just flat.

The visuals are dazzling and the tone is charming. I think Raimi was TOO GOOD for the material.
TheSuperMex
TheSuperMex - 3/17/2022, 1:15 PM
@BlackBeltJones - oh okay. That gives me less worries. The cast for Doctor Strange is way better than Oz. At least we’ll see some trippy stuff.

@BlackBeltJones - the what per concept was dumb. A prequel? Just remake the wizard of Oz for crying out loud. The Rock, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and black RDJ. Wait… tin man, Lion, scarecrow… dang ok take out… Dorothy. And make it a white guy acting black acting Vietnamese acting like a white girl. 900 million to 1.1 billion easy. Agatha harkness lady as the wicked witch.
