DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Magics Up An Impressive $200 Million At The Domestic Box Office

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness only started rolling out into theaters last Thursday, but the Marvel Studios blockbuster has already managed to pass the $200 million mark in North America...

Deadline confirms that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness earned a solid $13.3 million on Monday to take its domestic total to $200.7 million in North America. With an opening weekend of over $186 million, the sequel marks a return to form of sorts for Marvel Studios.

Spider-Man: No Way Home aside, the studio's last three movies all hit theaters when the pandemic was quite a bit worse. As a result, Black Widow grossed $80 million during its opening weekend (with an additional $60 million on Disney+' Premier Access service), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings netted $75 million, and Eternals hit theaters with a so-so $71 million.

The trade notes that they expect a 60% decline for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness heading into its second weekend, suggesting we'll see a three-day total of around $74 million.

Firestarter is unlikely to pose much of a problem to the former Sorcerer Supreme's latest solo adventure, which has plenty of time to make an impact before Top Gun: Maverick arrives over Memorial Day weekend. With that in mind, we expect to see this sequel eventually hit the $1 billion mark globally (even though the response from moviegoers hasn't been as positive as in the past).

"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a one of a kind blockbuster experience and a pure, unadulterated Sam Raimi movie that, while not quite the crazy ride through the Multiverse we expected, delivers a fun, horror-tinged trip," we said in our review of the blockbuster last week.

Did you head to the theater to watch Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness this weekend?

I kinda expect this movie to go strong for a few weeks. And even if not, I do think it'll cross that 1 billion mark. Or rather, I hope it does. Strange deserves that

@bkmeijer1 - The thing is that all movies released since the pandemic started, had MASSIVE drops after the opening weekend, and in two weeks, Top Gun 2 is out.

I actually hope this does well because of Sam, but on the other hand I dont want this do THAT well because I dont want the studio to be proven right for the 6 weeks of reshoots, and all the flaws the movie has.

I think $950M would mark that sweet spot of "ok, but we could've done better"

@bkmeijer1 - That’s a really good Monday

@TheHumanSpider2 - high opening weekend always has a high drop. It didn’t make 200, and every movie that makes 200 drops over 100 on second weekend. I guess we’ll see

As for 950 that would be just below BVS legs so really bad legs. 960-965 is the reasonable least it could make. Unless it were to drop dead, and that Monday number is not indicative of that. Best case is between IM3 and BP. I split the difference and call it 1.1

@TheWalkingCuban - BvS came out BEFORE the pandemic, its 60% drop was an embarrasment.
All movies now have over 60% drops, some of them (Black Widow, Morbius) even closer to 80%.

We'll see in a few days, $950M would be impresive numbers, it would make this movie the second most succesfull movie since the pandemic started (The Batman and No Time To Die made $750M, and FF9 made...800M?), and we know NWH was an anomaly...no other movie post-pandemic is making those numbers...maybe Avatar 2 will get close. MAYBE.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I’ll concede the above point tho BvS dropped 69%, Fun fact, it and Civil War had the same legs percentage wise, Civil War being one of the least leggy MCU movies

But yeah I concede the point. The pandemic did change the landscape.

@TheWalkingCuban - It changed things forever.
Even if people are not scared about going to movie theathers anymore, they choose very carefully what they go to see, because 45 days later, they can watch it at home...add how expensive things got all around the world because of the inflation and the war.

@TheHumanSpider2 - agreed. It could reach 400 plus domestic (difficult for a 2x multiplier and B+ CS) It will need a drop closer to the 60 than the 80. If these weekdays stay strong then the weekend could put it over 300. 315ish more like. Almost guarantees 400 plus. Puts less pressure on foreign to make up the difference for the billion. Is that the bar of excellence? Nah. 900 anything would be past all 3 2017 MCU movies which all got into the 900’s. That’s nothing to scoff at

@TheHumanSpider2 - I hope, regardless how much money it makes, that Feige and team can learn those valuable lessons that the movie could have and should have been better. Strange deserves that.

@TheWalkingCuban - At all, making $900M in the current era is a massive hit.
People and studios need to realise we are not in 2019 anymore, anything over $500M is already a success...of course, as long as the budget was sane, which is another story, studios need to stop throwing $250M budgets like they were candy.

@Typhoon20 - Yes.
Aside from the reshoots, its obvious they forced the 2 hours long runtime to get more showings, and that hurted the movie.

@TheHumanSpider2 - yeah when you look at NWH and see that it took 1.9 billion just to make 600 million, you KNOW marvel couldn’t have been happy with Widow thru Eternals. Not very happy anyway

@DrReedRichards @Moriakum - He said with the exception of No Way Home the franchise isn't as alive "after Endgame", as if Far From Home doesn't exist, Multiverse of Madness isn't on the verge of getting a billion and there wasn't a box office killing pandemic that harmed the others

Two of those movies from last year were about brand new characters, but he expects Ragnarok, Civil War and Black Panther numbers for those? 🤨

Perfect definition of a Hater. He was just one of those saying it would die, and now he feels embarrassed when you bring it up 🤦🏽‍♂️
