DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Star Benedict Cumberbatch Explains Reason For Latest Reshoots

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Benedict Cumberbatch has addressed the reason for another round of reshoots, saying that they're working to "realise the full potential of the film."

Reshoots have become the norm for Hollywood blockbusters, and for Marvel Studios, additional photography is scheduled before cameras even start rolling. Why? Well, their creative approach involves knowing that they'll want to tweak things in post-production, but that didn't stop Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness from making headlines recently.

It's been reported that the movie will undergo at least six weeks of shooting, six days a week in Los Angeles. That sounds like a lot of extra filming, but star Benedict Cumberbatch has now elaborated on the reasons the cast and crew are returning to the Sorcerer Supreme's world for such a lengthy stint.

"We're working incredibly hard to make a schedule work to realise the full potential of the film – bits that we want to do better but also bits that were just impossible to do on the day because of logistics, COVID etc.," the actor told Empire Magazine (via ComicBook.com).

"We were so delayed in production, because of that," Cumberbatch said of the pandemic. "Luckily, not during production too much. Although everything is just a little slower."

Considering the amount of rumours out there about some mind-bending cameos in the Doctor Strange sequel, we're not surprised that there were issues getting everyone on set during principal photography. However, since the Multiverse is such a huge concept, it's no bad thing Marvel Studios is making sure the story is handled in a way that does it justice.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be released on May 6, 2022.

@Fogs - or even directing films period. The last time I saw anything at all he directed was episodes of Ash Vs Evil Dead.

Any movie that has been in production during the last year and a half (at a minimum) I expect to have delays and reshoots. Just a sign of these Covid-19 times unfortunately.

The whole Odin farewell scene in Ragnarok was also a reshoot and it turned out great. If anything, a reshoot is a good sign. It shows us that they are willing to do anything to make the movie better.

@Unguviolet - ok, let's not go that far. There are thousands of reasons for a resort, both good and bad.

@Unguviolet - Also the I am Iron-Man scene in Endgame was a last minute reshoot. I guess reshoots can go either way, but they should always be done to improve the movie and not because something went wrong.

I hope that they don't get so carried away with spin that they deny the original cut as existing, because I'd like to see that one day.

I'm also certain the finished version will be good and my certainty comes from two things:

1. Kevin Feige.
Even if Raimi has made a brilliant version of the film, if it does not fit in with the MCU then it could spoil the whole soup. So I'm certain Kevin knows what's best.

2. Sam Raimi.
Raimi suffered similar problems on Spider-Man 3, but he is such a consumate professional that he rolled with the punches, thought fast on his feet, worked fast and well and actually ended up making all the last minute changes work to the betterment of the picture. He made lemonade out of lemons.
He's a natural born filmmaker and despite the reactions to Spider-man 3, it could have been a lot worse. It could have ended up being like Batman & Robin or Justice League, but despite not being a mass-audience-pleasing, feel-good film like the first two I think there is a strong emotional through line and it's actually very good on retrospect.

So, no matter what, I believe in Kevin Feige and I beleive in Sam Raimi, so I know the finished product is going to be what it should be.
But I also really wanna see the version where Scarlet Witch goes full Dark Phoenix, Avengers Disassembled-style.

I still keep seeing the anti-MCU camp saying that the only purpose of these reshoots is to force Raimi to add humor to this movie, because everyone knows that Raimi is a super-serious director, who has to be forced to have humor in his movies.
