Heading into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it's fair to say fans had a lot of lofty expectations. Unfortunately, many of those didn't become a reality, potentially explaining why many feel disappointed by the blockbuster. We obviously got some high-profile cameos, but, like Eternals, the Doctor Strange sequel failed to add mutants to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Wanda Maximoff has a lot of history with mutants in the comic books, of course, and even removed the powers of millions of them during the House of M storyline. With that in mind, you'd think there might be a way for the Scarlet Witch to bring them into the MCU, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron explained why that didn't happen while talking to ET Online.

"Yeah, we talked about House of M, and there’s plenty of examples of Wanda doing bad things throughout the comics in an effort to get her kids back," he explained. "But ultimately this story didn’t need mutants to be powerful, I guess was our feeling. And, you know, wherever that lies on the timeline for the MCU, it didn’t feel like this was the right place to introduce it."

"Then it suddenly would have just been about mutants," Waldron continued. "And this is really a story about Wanda and her grief and her descent into darkness in this movie."

We can't find fault with the decision not to include mutants in the sequel, but [SPOILER ALERT] X-Men leader Professor X did make a cameo as a member of The Illuminati on Earth-838. It's a shame we didn't learn more about his mutant status or visit a world where Homo Superior is dominant, but it's looking like Marvel Studios plans to take its time adding these characters to the MCU.

Still, a "No More Mutants" moment could happen down the line once mutants join this shared world. Don't be shocked if that takes place in the long-rumoured Secret Wars movie.

Introducing mutants would of derailed an already pretty full movie. Ultimately I was happy with the cameo's we got. Lets save The Xmen and mutants in general for their own movies and related series. Also original team first, before Nightcrawler, Storm ect :)

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness overtaken first Doctor Strange box office in two weekends - bodes well for a 900 - 950 million movie, Its currently at 688 million.

Looking at what the final product is, it’s understandable why they didn’t. Now that this opportunity has passed, though, there doesn’t seem to be any obvious ways to introduce them. But Marvel probably intends on avoiding the obvious.

@MarvelousMarty - A story can absolutely be about the emotional journey of one character but from the perspective of a different one. The Roadrunner cartoons are also not really about the roadrunner.

@MarvelousMarty - The question was about Wanda and her famous line, so he focused on that...

I think a Doctor Strange movie would've been a weird place anyway to introduce it. I'll just patiently wait for the mutants movie, so they can take all the time they need

If they really have to faff around with alternate realities all the time, I wonder if we'll get the Timebroker and the Exiles? (ie. long run of back issues that need a pump!)

“failed to add mutants” makes it sound like they forgot to do it or something.

I'm not complaining about the missed cameos, the story was lackluster, Strange was a minor character in his movie! What was his character motivation in this movie other than hurr durr Christine didn't marry me hurr durr. This is Wandavision season two, not a doctor Strange sequel. You figured there'd be fallout from NWH or even LOKI but nooo, because 60% of these movies are planned out years in advance.. and since this was supposed to go before almost all of the Disney plus stuff and nwh, you can see the problem. They're too big to fail, why even hire a writer and director if you're story team and pre-vis cgi in advance already has the story made. It's like color by the numbers for movies, and it's starting to become stale as [frick]. Also everyone praises box office, it's because people like me see it at least twice on opening weekend, they're always front loaded so there's a certainan amount of revenue expected. When these movies start to get lower cinemascore's, It hurts their second weekend and so on. But let the shills and blindness fools bash anyone that see phase four has been extremely disappointing up to this point. Phase one was better in so many ways, and since they're running out of A-list characters and most B list, the c's are starting to look like dog shit 🤷‍♂️
