DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Writer On Whether The Movie Sets The Stage For SECRET WARS

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron has shared his take on whether the events of this sequel are setting the stage for a big screen adaptation of Secret Wars. Check it out...

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduces the concept of incursions, and if you're a fan of Jonathan Hickman's Marvel Comics work, you'll know what a big deal that is. Like in the MCU, incursions occur when two different realities collide, and on the page, this led to Secret Wars

During that event, a new world was created made up of various realities (which is what eventually brought Spider-Gwen and Miles Morales into the main Marvel Universe). Needless to say, that could prove the perfect way to reboot some characters and bring others, like the X-Men, into the MCU.

Talking to io9, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron was asked to elaborate on the introduction of incursions and whether they could be leading to something more.

"Well, I guess I think of it akin to it in the way that as soon as the MCU introduced the notion of space, of going to space, they teased Thanos almost immediately," he teased. "There was Thor. And then Avengers was the first movie where there was a threat from the stars. And here comes Thanos. Obviously, there was a big build from there. So I think that maybe I always thought of the Multiverse as kind of like, 'OK, this is space.' You know, once upon a time, the MCU left Earth and went to the stars, now we’re going into the multiverse. So yeah we’ll see what happens with these incursions."

Making it clear we haven't seen the last of them, Waldron then ominously teased, "They’re bad news."

We get a hint at what might come next when Clea makes her MCU debut and tells Stephen Strange she needs his help with an incursion his actions have caused. With that, they head into the Dark Dimension together, and we're assuming more about incursions will be revealed in Doctor Strange 3.

As for Secret Wars, the prevailing theory is that the Russo Brothers will return to direct that movie for Marvel Studios. How long we'll be waiting until it becomes a reality is a mystery for now, though.

More than likely the overarching backdrop that leads into the next Avengers movie

I never understood the mass appeal of Secret Wars (the Beyonder is ridiculous, imo)... but if it wraps up all these multiverse shenanigans (as much as I love 'No Way Home' and 'MoM'), I'm down with it. Especially if the Russos are definitely in. I would trust them to do any story justice.

@rychlec - I feel same way I never like beyonder we never see him again anymore in comics read about his name and costume is stupid looking most part

@rychlec - I think they’re gonna do the last secret wars 2015(?) where all the universes collided and battle world showed up then they rebooted into the new universe pulling in whatever characters they wanted

@rychlec - I never really understood the appeal of Thanos either (his motivation to win the love of death was kinda dumb in my opinion) until Infinity War. If the Russos and Markus & McFeely are back for Secret Wars, I'm sure I'm gonna enjoy that just as much.

@rychlec - Don't get this thing of people wanting the multiverse storyline to end. Multiverse offers so many possibilities, they would be dumb not to use its full potential in my opinion.

@Urubrodi - the multi verse makes some characters not matter as much when we know there are an infinite number of other versions of them

@bkmeijer1 - agreed! I never saw the appeal of galactic either. Bit I bet feige can Make me care

@Urubrodi - I don't mind the multiverse story continuing for a while. I just don't want it to be a crutch for introducing characters loke the X-Men and mutants into the mainline MCU.

@bkmeijer1 - Personally, Thanos' motivation in the MCU made less sense than him trying to win over Death.

Just think about it. The guy had an all powerful tool at his disposal. He wanted to cure the universe of overpopulation to save natural resources from being used up. So he kills half the population of the universe? That doesn't solve anything, it just prolongs the inevitable, which is a word he loves using. Eventually those populations will rebuild and repopulate. The natural resources are still limited. He fixed nothing.

He had a tool that he could literally shape reality with. He could have done countless things to "save" the universe without killing half the population.
Urubrodi

@Vigor - I see it a bit differently. Yes, there are different versions of a character, but they are not the "same". What I mean is that even though they have many similarities they have enough differences that make them unique. For example, the 616 Dr. Strange would never cause the destruction of another universe, he definitely has flaws but I can't see him going that far, so it's not the same person. Plus, if Marvel wants to they could even make standalone movies in the future in another universe without affecting the main timeline, if a story doesn't fit with their overall plans but is worth telling anyways.

@CorndogBurglar - I understand your point, but I think we are too down the line in the main MCU to introduce mutants in an organic way. Like how do you explain why someone like Magneto has been quite all this time, why they never intervened in any event up to this point (like the demise of half of all life), how no mutant whatsover up to this point has revealed itself... Just saying they were hiding would be horrible. An incursion with another universe that has mutants on the other hand would work. It doesn't need to be the Fox universe.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 5/11/2022, 2:06 PM
@Urubrodi - There are easy answers to everything you questioned though.

"how no mutant whatsover up to this point has revealed itself..."

Because mutants haven't necessarily been in hiding, they just don't know what they are. They are still relatively new. They could easily say that the government is really the only people that know what mutants are and that they are the next step in evolution. They could have testing facilities where they've been experimenting on them, and sometimes mutants even die. Magneto is in one of these, and he's seen mutants killed, so it would basically be his modern day Holocaust.

People also know about powered humans and most mutants look like normal humans. And even the more strange looking ones have seen people like Hulk and Abomination. They've seen people using powers in public. Without knowing they are mutants, people could easily just think they have powers like the Avengers. So even though we haven't seen any in a movie yet, it doesn't mean they aren't out there doing things. (And technically, Ursa Major is a mutant)

"Like how do you explain why someone like Magneto has been quite all this time"

Magneto hasn't revealed himself because he hasn't been free.

The X-Men never intervened because they weren't the X-Men yet. They were just at Xavier's school (outreach program) learning how to control their powers. (Xavier knows all about mutants because he's a powerful telepath and learned about them a while back)

They never formed any kind of super team because that wasn't their original purpose. But in the first movie someone in the government (Trask) can leak all the information about mutants (due to Mr Sinister manipulating them) to the public, create panic by telling them that humans only have a few generations before mutants become the dominant species, start a race war, then get public agrreance to create Sentinels and start hunting mutants.

This would be the catalyst for everything mutants. The X-Men form a team to go help mutants being hunted by Sentinels. Magneto gets pissed and breaks out, but instead of being helpful like the X-Men, he commits terrorist acts to scare humans into leaving mutants alone.

There are things that can be done that doesn't include mutants just popping into reality out of no where. That feels so cheap and lazy.

@CorndogBurglar - yeah his plans had major flaws, but I think it's still solid (from his perspective).

His theory is pretty much the same as Malthus had here on Earth (look up the Malthus trap), and Thanos had the evidence in Titan's downfall to support that theory. Based on that he went around to work.

Did he fix nothing? I'm not so sure. The Black Death did the same in Europe, and after that Europe entered a time of flourisment (food, technology, philosophy, etc.).

Was there another Secret Wars? When I was reading comics as a kid I read the Secret Wars limited series when it came out and everyone came from the same universe.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 5/11/2022, 10:18 AM
@CplHicks - 2015 one is probably what they’re going for. It’s a multiverses event about universes colliding / incursions
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/11/2022, 10:29 AM
@CplHicks @ShimmyShimmyYA - I'm kinda hoping for the two stories to be merged. Maybe another two parter where the first one has Beyonder as the villain, and the second with God Emperor Doom (after having stolen Beyonder's powers in part one). Think most characters will be from the main MCU though

@CplHicks - I'm with you. I had no idea about the 2015 Secret Wars until everyone started talking about MoM leading to it. I was really confused for a minute.

TheOtherOn - 5/11/2022, 11:09 AM
@CplHicks - Think of it as a cheap imitation of DC's Crisis series, pretty sure you know at least something about that since it was adapted for Arrowverse.
ElvenKingSlayer
ElvenKingSlayer - 5/12/2022, 3:21 AM
@bkmeijer1 - And in-between the two parter all shows on disney+ should take place on Battleworld

@ElvenKingSlayer - could definitely see that work. Three or four shows just focused on Battleworld would be pretty sweet

Incursion = A smart method for bringing fox and netflix properties to the MCU.

Was teased with "bohner" in WV, made pretty clear in Loki and a certainty already in NWH.

Favourite Secret Wars 2015 spoilers that I wanna see on screen, without spoiling it for those who haven't read the story:

- Point Break cops
- Racing coliseum
- Ben's wall
- Franklin's pet
- Quill's toothpick
- MK Fatality
- Cheeseburger
- Checkers panel

@DrReedRichards - I'm so on board with the fatality. I really like how the MCU keeps using Thanos to establish the power levels of other characters. And that moment is no different

Reeds2Much - 5/11/2022, 10:42 AM
@DrReedRichards - I wasn't a huge fan of the main storyline, but I did enjoy some of the side stories. Mostly the Ghost Rider, Thor Corps, and Spider-Man books ... And Captain America with Devil Dinosaur. If the movies are indeed going to do SW15 then I hope there's a Disney+ shows/anthology that features some of those side books to go along with it.
