DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Writer Reveals Who Came Up With Black Bolt's Gruesome Death

Wanda Maximoff killed The Illuminati in all manner of inventive and horrific ways, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesss writer Michael Waldron has revealed the story behind Black Bolt's demise.

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Scarlet Witch invaded Earth-838 and made short work of The Illuminati. Mister Fantastic was shredded before having his head popped, Professor X's neck was snapped, Captain Marvel was crushed to death, and Captain Carter ended up being sliced in half by her own shield.

As for Black Bolt, Wanda Maximoff removed his mouth, resulting in the hero's powerful voice blowing his own head up from the inside (we're guessing he hoped to blast free of her spell).

Talking to Empire Magazine (via The Direct), writer Michael Waldron shed some light on how this shocking and brutal moment came to be. "I was at a point in the script where I was like, ’Shit, I don’t know what to do," he recalls. "We wanted the first death to feel really horrific."

"We were sitting on Zoom discussing how we kill Black Bolt, and somebody said his power is shooting ultra-powerful energy from his mouth. And I swear to God, without missing a beat, Sam goes, 'What mouth?' And Sam just painted the scene for us... you just cut to him, Wanda’s just ripped his mouth closed, and he screams, and his head explodes.' That’s master of horror Sam Raimi."

It was a memorable moment, that's for sure. However, many fans have expressed disappointment with the scene due to how little screen-time characters like Black Bolt and Mister Fantastic received in the sequel. While we know the latter will return (likely with a new actor), there's been no indication Marvel Studios has any real plans for the Inhumans.

That was confirmed when Ms. Marvel was revealed as a mutant, though we suppose it's always possible that they will somehow be connected to the Inhumans down the line.

Either way, it definitely makes sense for Raimi to be the one responsible for coming up with Black Bolt's gruesome death in the Doctor Strange sequel.

What did you think about Black Bolt's grisly demise?

Must be fun getting paid to brainstorm ideas to kill of a character in a blockbuster movie.

I still can't get over how the smartest man alive pretty much gave the one terror Doctor Strange was afraid of the way to defeat his most powerful ally on a platter. If your biggest terror is afraid of something, why not take that very seriously?

Anyway, the death itself was pretty cool. Raimi sure knew what he was doing there. That whole sequence was just great (aside from what I mentioned above).

@bkmeijer1 - yeah, that could be better. We can only imagine he wouldn't guess she could do it.

Kind of pointless bringing in “new” (new to mcu) characters just to get killed.

@Humperdoo - Yeah kind of. Nobody had a chance to get attached to them so them dying didn’t really mean anything.

@Humperdoo - I don't have a problem with that cause I got the Variant thing. But what pissed me off was they used the Illuminati for marketing, as if they had all this importance. That was kind of a dick move.

@Humperdoo - I mean, Marvel is all in on the Multiverse now. No one really dies anymore, when they can just bring back a variant, played by the same actor(s).

I'm more surprised they didn't have Vin Diesel as Black Bolt. He was originally supposed to play him in the MCU years and years ago.

I like the part in the article that says, “(likely with a new actor).” You have absolutely no clue either way. The majority of these articles are copy and pasted from other sites or Reddit.

@ProudPatriot76 - marvel would’ve let It be known if they were cast as them for future movies

@ShimmyShimmyYA - maybe. Maybe not. Paul Rudd is a prime example

@ProudPatriot76 - after the movie came out with them as Reed and bolt? They would’ve 100% said these are them going forward there’s no point in keeping the secret after that we saw it

@ShimmyShimmyYA - part of the reason to see any movie is surprises and suspense... those variants are not the people going forward, but in another universe a variant of them may be and played by the same actor... while people are sure they are not being used it could be that they come back and are way better than depicted in the 838 universe... hence why they lived and 838 died.

@JonC - oh yeah that I agree with, I could see them brought back as other variants of Reed and bolt again, as we saw so far it varies whether or not you look like your variant
