DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Writer Suggests AMERICA CHAVEZ Solo Project Could Be On The Way

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron has talked more about America Chavez's MCU debut, suggesting that a solo outing for the character could be in the works at Marvel Studios.

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we meet Xochitl Gomez's America Chavez. The character has the unique ability to punch her way through different realities, and [SPOILER ALERT], she manages to gain a pretty solid control over her powers by the time all is said and done in the sequel.

It doesn't feel like the character's story is over, though, and it's clear that a big part of America's arc moving forward will be searching for her two mothers after they were lost in the Multiverse.

Writer Michael Waldron was asked by Vanity Fair if that unresolved plot point was deliberate, to which he said, "Yeah, that's definitely me collaborating with Marvel and with Sam. Really, that is as much about trying to drive America's story in this film, as it is attempting to set up a mystery to be solved in the future. She's somebody without a family. That's what she's searching for."

"And that's what she finds - surprisingly - in our Doctor Strange and Wong. She finds a home in Kamar-Taj at the end," the Doctor Strange sequel scribe continues. "When it's all said and done, it looks kind of tidy. We also set up the next chapter in the America Chavez story."

Waldron would go on to suggest that there are even bigger plans in place for America in the MCU than first anticipated, teasing a solo outing for the hero. "Getting into the real specificity of her with her parents came a little bit later in the process. It felt, at least to me initially, that maybe we should hold some of that back. It felt like the sort of stuff you'd rather answer when you're getting into America's solo outing. But as we continued to build the story, we found we wanted to know more about her."

There were rumblings about a Disney+ series not too long ago, and that would be the perfect way to continue America's story and better explore the Multiverse. Having her cross paths with the God of Mischief in Loki's second season would make sense, though there are no doubt plenty of heroes and villains (such as Kang the Conqueror) who would like to tap into her reality-hopping powers.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters.

They are gearing up for a Young Avengers so it makes sense.

I enjoyed her in the movie

Surprisingly, I actually liked her character. Normally these types of side characters can be a bit annoying, but I wouldn't mind seeing more from her on Disney+. Maybe after some type of Young Avengers project she can show up in Kamala's show. She definitely doesn't need her own film though..

@SonOfOdor - Her own film sounds like a bad idea

@TheWalkingCuban - So she staying in this universe will not cause incursion?

@MartianManHuntr - shes probably a Nexus being, besides She's the only one in the multiverse

@SonOfOdor - Same! I really liked her and to be totally honest I thought she would suck like some recent side characters (looking at you, new hawkeye).

Still, makes me wonder if there's a third way of a multiversal series (well, it's her superpower, right?) with her not being:
- Very expensive, CGI and cameo-wise
- OR generic and uninteresting due to the lack of the above

@Dannywest - Unless I missed something, I don't think it is explained in movie what causes it right?
I mean 838 strange was dream walking and it caused incursions as per mister fantastic.

@TheWalkingCuban - To me her character wasn't required in movie either. She could have been replaced by a book (macguffin) and it won't change much.
Also not sure what would she do in her own movie, send bad guys to different universe to save the day.

@MartianManHuntr - I guess she gave it humanity, tho ironically, it worked way better with Vision and the Mind Stone. You know… someone should have pointed out to Wanda that she had become a Mad Titanic

I did like her character more than I anticipated. Another Universe hopping bout could be fun. Who knows where she could end up or who she could run into?

Not really needed. Just fine as tertiary character in someone else's movie. Maybe a D+ mini of her trying to find her moms. But there are other far more bigger characters that need a movie

I get Disney+ allows for telling multiple stories that otherwise wouldn't make it to the big screen, but I do feel they're already moving to c-characters before giving b-characters their chance. Where is my Nova for example?

That said, I wouldn't mind seeing more of her though. A Young Avengers show with her, Kate, Yelena, Cassie and Kamela would have my preference.

She had a strong debut. I hope they don't needlessly make her a sorcerer, though. Her own powers are more than enough. Hopefully we get more unique multiverse locations in the solo season. The introductory montage was super cool, but the Illuminati's universe was terribly generic.

Ehh her acting was little too Disney Channel for me imo, tbh I was hoping that her performance in the movie would make up for the fact that she looks *ahem* "different" from how she does in the comics.

@Superspecialawesomeguy - yeah, they did the same with the two Afro Latinos characters in New Mutants

Shivermetimbers

@Superspecialawesomeguy - I actually agree with you about her acting. I thought the character was OK, but the actress was unexceptional. Zero need for her to have her own movie. Marvel is diluting the MCU too much when they reach for characters like this to have their own movie, or Agatha Harkness to get her own series, etc.

Saw it last night. It was okay at best. I saw people when I was leaving the theater acting like it was such an amazing movie. I honestly think Marvel fans have gotten so far into denial when it comes to admitting a product they have is bad. I swear they act like every MCU movie is Citizen Kane lol

@MrDitkovich - They started with Black Panther which was just okay. After that so many movies were just okay as well.
They lavished praise on Captain Marvel which was just bad.
And Endgame which was a mess.
Black Widow was bad, Eternals was terrible.
You are right,
DarthOmega
DarthOmega - 5/13/2022, 3:07 PM
@MrDitkovich - Agreed. I was called racist for saying Black Panther was just ok. (Weird because I'm Black, but ok.) I said Eternals was boring and got a weird pile on from the usual snarky hypocrites here. The Disney+ shows are bland, BW was lame, Strange was honestly kinda bland. No Way Home was cool, but when I re-watch it, I honestly skip to the parts where they show the villains and the Peters.

Here's an example: I'm watching a giant one eyed monster from another dimension sent by a former Avenger tear up a city. I'm watching Dr. Strange fall through different dimensions including an animated one, and one where he is paint. I'm watching Dr. Strange inhabit the body of a dead, and decaying alternate dimension version of himself, giving dialogue with basically half a rotting face.

And I just don't care. I'm bored.

I think the MCU should go back to the drawing board and figure out what made them pop in the first place. It wasn't interdimensional monsters. It wasn't a billion characters with insane abilities. It was one man with a sick goatee, a drinking problem, and an advanced knowledge of science and engineering.

Maybe they should think of scaling it back a bit for the next phase.

Shivermetimbers
Shivermetimbers - 5/13/2022, 3:23 PM
@DarthOmega - Amen to this!! They need to focus more on character, less on spectacle if they want to dare to be great, but the masses buy tickets for the spectacle. I am personally bored with most of it too lately. I did like Moon Knight (mainly because of Oscar Isaac's incredible performance), and at least Dr Strange didn't put me to sleep like the last few movies have, but I am feeling the Marvel Fatigue quite a bit. I should be pumped for Thor, but I am barely interested.
