DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Writer Talks Mid-Credit Scene Surprise And Why Kang Doesn't Appear

While Avengers: Endgame showed us what could happen when Earth's Mightiest Heroes travelled through time (to what we're now guessing was another reality), it was Loki that really opened the door to the Multiverse. In the Disney+ series, Jonathan Majors made his MCU debut as Kang the Conqueror Variant, He Who Remains, and we're expecting to see him next in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

Which Variant that will be is hard to say, but Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron, who served as Loki's Head Writer, has explained Kang's absence from the sequel.

"To me, it felt like we had the biggest, best bullet already, in Wanda," Waldron told Deadline's Hero Nation Podcast. "That when working with Sam, when it was like we should really make the decisions to make Wanda the antagonist of this film. It was exciting and part of that was the feeling of ‘geez, we can’t let another movie go have that fun.’ It because she is going to be so great."

"And I think that if you had introduced Kang, as great as Jonathan Majors is, and as great as he is going to be playing that character, you would have risked the movie just getting maybe over-stuffed."

That makes sense, and the Doctor Strange sequel introduced another key character in Charlize Theron's Clea. She appeared in the movie's mid-credits scene to recruit the former Sorcerer Supreme for a mission into the Dark Dimension, and Waldron opened up about the character's debut.

"We always knew we wanted to introduce Clea, who in the comics is you could say the great love of Doctor Strange, but really in a lot of ways his formidable equal as a sorcerer herself," he said. "Her backstory is fascinating, she's the niece of Dormammu, the giant floating head from the first movie."

"They have a lot of great adventures in the comics, and we knew we wanted to introduce her, but it felt like we had to close the book to some extent on his love story with Christine Palmer, Rachel McAdams' character. Doctor Strange hears that wisdom from Christine to face his fears and be open to the idea of loving someone and then along comes Clea. I guess we'll see what happens next."

We hopefully won't be waiting too long before catching up with Strange again, but if he is off in the Dark Dimension, who knows how long it will be before he returns. Early signs point to the hero having been corrupted by dark magic, and that could spell major trouble for the MCU moving forward.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters.

I like this decision.

Plus, we're close to Ant Man 3 for Kang and that shit is going to be another crazy ass ride.

I wouldn't say it would be overstuff. But you could have easily had a Kang Variant be the leader of the Illuminati instead of Charles Xavier. Xavier did absolutely nothing for that sequence besides fanfare and a Kang Variant would have kept Jonathan Majors fresh in the minds of Casuals.

@SonOfAGif - I think it could've worled, but I kinda expect all Kang variants showing up next are all gonna be some set-up to how dangerous prime Kang us gonna be. Just having him show up to be killed off right away wouldn't service that

@bkmeijer1 - I don't think it would have damaged any service to Kang Prime in any way. Especially if it was the Illuminati Kang who helped shaped that realities futuristic look. It would sort of have expanded the intelligence of a Kang and him warning Wanda of the consequences of a Multiversal War would have been a perfect set up for the next big event film.

@SonOfAGif - oh yeah, thats a very good point. Didn't think of it that way, but I think that could've worked to set up that (any variant of) Kang means big business.

@SonOfAGif - he did nothing? He was the one that locked her up in her head and spared time for Steven to get free. He was also the one that convinced the Illuminati that Steven should get the book. He also was the one to tell him the truth.

I guess it's another reality, but not an existing one. They created it by travelling back in their own timeline, which branches off at that point they enter that timeline.

Anyway, seeing how Kang is more science based, it makes sense to me that he wouldn't appear in a magic based movie.

just got out of this movie, I enjoyed it, asna study of Strange and Wanda, through the filter of the multiverse, it was great, far more than Eternals was

And little did I know 20 years ago...screw it 5 years ago...that we would get a Doctor Strange sequel directed by Raimi, featuring variants of Professor Xavier (to the DAMN XMEN ANIMATED SERIES THEME), Blackbolt, Mr Fantastic, references to Wundagore, Doctor Strange/Wanda relationship from the late 00s and Charlize Theron as Clea in a mid credits scene...Marvel killing it as usual.

Plus a scene where two Doctor Stranges use the soundtrack as a weapon...

Shut up.

We could say the same for Avengers 1... Then they showed hanos for 5 seconds. And everyone understood what was going on and it did not diminishe anyone.

This excuse for not including Kang for at least 1 minute is BS.

Over stuffed? Did they already forget about endgames last battle? It was kind of underwhelming but it worked.

So the excuse for 1 guy is whack.

I’m just curious as to why the TVA wasn’t interested in America Chavez? Seems like someone that can jump through multiverses would definitely be a person of interest, even with all the Kang drama happening at the TVA it seems like someone would be looking into her. 🤷‍♂️

What would happen if America Chavez pushed Kang through a portal, or infinite loop of portals over and over?

Sending Kang to the liquid universe, lol

Would have been cool if Raimi played the raindrops keep falling on my head song, 😆 would have been perfect with Dr. Strange walking down the street.
