DOCTOR STRANGE Sequel Reportedly Cut A Disturbing Origin Story For Earth-838 Scarlet Witch Variant

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness featured Wanda Maximoff's Earth-838 counterpart, and a new rumour claims to shed some light on cut scenes exploring this Scarlet Witch's twisted origin story...

In multiple interviews, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Elizabeth Olsen has expressed interest in exploring what led to Earth-838's Scarlet Witch seemingly being a single parent. She's also hinted that this Wanda isn't quite as powerful as her MCU counterpart, but is this why?

Movie Scope has shared what they claim are details on key scenes from the Doctor Strange sequel revealing a twisted origin story for Earth-838 Wanda that ended up being cut. We're taking this with a pinch of salt, though the story was Retweeted by reliable leaker MyTimeToShineHello.

It's said The Illuminati was once set to be portrayed in a more antagonistic light, and when that world's Doctor Strange tapped into the Darkhold, we would have learned about the Scarlet Witch prophecy. Taking his findings to his teammates, the decision would have been made to lobotomise Wanda to prevent her from ever becoming a being powerful enough to destroy their reality.

Professor X would have been responsible for taking away (or, we presume, dialling down) Wanda's powers, thereby resulting in her being more mom than superhero. Charles was also set to consult with her father, Magneto, and this is reportedly where Michael Fassbender's cameo came in. Supposedly, a villainous Illuminati didn't test well and was too much of a diversion, hence why it was cut.

It definitely sounds like something that could have once been in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but it does seem superfluous to the story. As for that Fassbender appearance, we've heard that Marvel Studios shot the unused cameos with stand-ins, so the actor was likely never on set.

Do you wish this Scarlet Witch subplot had made the cut?

@marvel72 - Word it, the original cut is not that different, the pacing is better because of the extra 40 minutes, but its not a completely different movie.
That completely different movie was scrapped when then fired Derrickson.

Still, I want to see the original Raimi Cut.

Yup, that's definitely something the Illuminati would do. (No sarcasm)

While I think it would have been an awesome scene, I think it detracts from 838 Wanda being happy with her kids

@Evansly - I still wonder who their father was...

@TheHumanSpider2 - I find the whole thing fascinating. Billy and Tommy exist in every universe but 616 Wanda's, right? ... and there was no sign or mention of Vision in 838. Clearly, when Wanda manifested the boys in Wandavision she was pulling them (perhaps unwittingly) from dreams, visions of herself in other universes. My guess is 616 is the *only* universe in which Wanda falls in love with Vision. It's an interesting twist because they've sold us their love story through movies and Wandavision yet it seems to be the exception and ultimately a real wrench into Wanda's happiness - it prevented her from falling in love with, and having the boys with, their father. Even if the dad turned out to be a jackass (or died) in 838 (and in how many other universes), those Wandas ultimately found happiness because of the boys. It's wild stuff when you think about it a bit.

@ptick - My preference for that story would've been:

That universe is some years ahead of the mainline MCU universe.

When Scarlet Witch confronts that Wanda and those versions of her kids, she has a debate with the other version of herself, who refuses to lose her children. Scarlet Witch assumes, and says to her, that this Wanda knows nothing about the pain she's gone through (assuming that their lives must be very different because this Wanda has more of a normal life), but this Wanda tells her that she does know the pain and trauma, because basically almost the exact same events that happened to Scarlet Witch happened to that Wanda, even Westview, but this Wanda chose to refuse the darkhold, and she moved forward with a man named Simon Williams, who she had these kids with, Simon having died as well, but she still chooses to move forward.

@ptick - ...maybe? still, Wanda choosing EXACTLY the universe where neither Vision or Pietro exist feels so lazy..."oh, we can get Bettany and Taylor-Johnson, lets just pretend they dont exist"...come on.

That actually makes more sense to how the Illuminati would behave.
I wondered why Xavier didn’t interfere to stop Wanda like he often does.

It also would have been a great way to introduce him in Wandavision as I mentioned before. She causes a rift in the multiverse opening it to bring in Pietro (not Bohner) and that gets Xavier access and he steps in to stop her near the climax of Wandavision.

That would have been epic to see.

@SpaceParanoids - The Illuminati arent heroes, they are pretty much a fascist regime.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Precisely. Xavier steps in because he wants to take control away from Wanda. Bad power vs bad power.

I'm glad they didn't go this route. The Illuminati were already assholes, we didn't need them to also be villainous assholes, especially since Supreme Strange was already killed off for going off the deep end. There's a randomness that comics have that movies often lose, and I loved how much of the stuff in this movie was due to circumstance, rather than the plot bending to preserve the moral standing of all of its characters

Questionable morals for the greater good is a theme with various members of the Illuminati. I don’t see why this is too much of a diversion from source material. In fact this is the exact kind of thing Professor X is famous for. The man abuses his power all the time.

@PhoenixBlade - it’s not about being true to the source. It’s about testing well with the audience
PhoenixBlade
PhoenixBlade - 5/18/2022, 4:38 PM
@Himura - Realistically studios need to learn when to listen and not listen to reactions. Fight Club was poorly received before release. BvS was positively received. General audiences would reject 80% of the best arcs in comic books after seeing the first film in the series because they don’t have the vision to look further than one film. Empire Strikes Back was rejected by general audiences too. The Illuminati is very well received in the comics. That’s all the evidence they need for it working. General audiences will accept it after some more developing.

The real illuminutty doesn't want to be portrayed somewhat accurately in their films.

"Didn't test well?" OH FOR ***** SAKE! If I were the Scarlet Witch, I'd wipe the concept of test audiences out of these idiot execs heads. The Illuminati are SUPPOSED to be antagonistic! That's THE WHOLE ******* POINT! If they'd gone this route, maybe they wouldn't have been a complete drag on the movie.

While this would not be the way to do it, they do need to depower Wanda in some way. I think they need to spell out what powers are inert to her mutant side and what is added by Cthon.

That is literally what Charles did with Jean in two X-Men movies already?
On the other hand, Fassbender playing Olsen's dad?
