It may have taken a while, but Marvel Studios is finally moving forward with the highly anticipated sequel to Doctor Strange.

We found out that the first film's director Scott Derrickson was officially set to helm the follow-up late last year, and now That Hashtag Show has confirmed that screenwriter C. Robert Cargill will also be returning to help him pen the script.

Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise the role of The Sorcerer Supreme, and he'll be joined by Benedict Wong as fellow wizard, Wong. Rachael McAdams is also "likely" to return as Strange's love interest, who really didn't get a whole lot to do in the first film. We still don't know if Chiwetel Ejiofor will be back, but Cargill has previously suggested that Mordo does have a part to play in the story, which is expected to feature Nightmare as the main villain.

All going well, production on Doctor Strange 2 is expected to get underway by spring of 2020, with an eye on a May 2021 release.

I hope in the sequel we get Nightmare as villain, and we see Mordo continue his journey to more extreme way of thinking. Then Mordo could be the big final antagonist in the third movie. It would be great if we really saw that, in Mordo and Strange's eventual confrontation, it is truly battle of ideologies. Not just "because he is now evil".

Very cool guy, and former AICN contributor (before Harry got drunk on . . . power? I guess he had power?). An excellent Twitter follow, especially if you're an aspiring writer.

@BestAtWhatIDo - It's cool to see someone like that writing a mainstream superhero flick, especially when it's Marvel right now.

2020 gonna be a lowkey boring year for Marvel.

Black Widow? Eh, ok. Could be good, but who's really hyped for that?

Eternals? Bleh.

Maybe they can fast-track BP2 and have it release for Christmas 2020.

@KWilly - I'm excited for Black Widow and ambivalent to Eternals.

However, Doctor Strange is FAR more likely to be fast tracked into 2020 than Black Panther

@KWilly - To be fair, Marvel at this point can make people hyped for anything.

@KWilly - Black Widow has assembled an excellent crew behind the camera and I think has huge potential to be one of the strongest additions to the genre. As for Eternals, I'm personally always excited for a new Marvel franchise.
Not a really boring year, but I would love to see Doctor Strange 2 in 2020.
