DOCTOR STRANGE Writer Confirms Nightmare As The Sequel's Villain; Outlines Baron Mordo's Role
A follow-up to Doctor Strange is still not a sure thing, but chances are it will happen at some point. Now, one of the first film's co-writers has shared a few new details about the potential sequel...
Though a sequel to Marvel's Doctor Strange still hasn't been officially greenlit, Marvel Studios has indicated that it will happen at some point. But, even if that day does come, the return of the first film's creative team is not a sure thing.
That doesn't mean that they don't have a plan for how the story will progress. however.
C. Robert Cargill, who wrote the first movie with Scott director Derrickson, recently spoke at a Q&A following a screening in Austin, Texas, and, among other things, he confirmed that "Nightmare will be the villain."
Me and Scott have not laid the groundwork for it but what I can say is that I have a feeling that whatever Nightmare is involved with, Baron Mordo, being somebody who considers himself the defender of natural law will have something to do with it."
Towards the end of Doctor Strange, Chiwetel Ejiofor's Mordo took a darker path to the Sorcerer Supreme and it's strongly implied that he would take an antagonistic role in the sequel. Cargill does state that there are big plans for the character moving forward, but his comments may also suggest that a reconciliation with Strange may be on the cards:
For those of you who have ever read the comics, you know that Baron Mordo has a very particular arc, and that's something we discussed with Chiwetel while working on the first movie. And part of the reason Chiwetel wanted to play Mordo was because he has a definitive ending as a character and it's such a fascinating ending. And I do know that whether we're attached or not, that Marvel plans on working towards that ending and fully realizing Mordo as more than just a cardboard cutout villain, but actually taking him to kind of Loki levels of awesomeness. That's the goal with him."
Could we see Mordo return to the light to help combat the larger threat of Nightmare, perhaps? Let's hop the sequel gets off the ground and we get to find out!
