RUMOR MILL: DOCTOR STRANGE 2 May Introduce The Illuminati With Professor X, Mister Fantastic & Namor Debuts

Well, here's an interesting rumor to kickstart your week. It's being reported that the Doctor Strange sequel may introduce the Marvel Illuminati with the debuts of Professor X, Mister Fantastic & Namor!

Just in case you didn't think Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness wasn't already big enough, it sounds like it may have gotten a whole lot bigger.

Giant Freakin Robot is reporting that the Sam Raimi-directed superhero sequel is all-set to introduce the Marvel Illuminati with the long-awaited Marvel Cinematic Universe debuts of Professor X, Mister Fantastic, and Namor the Sub-Mariner.

It would be best to take this report with a grain of salt for now, as Marvel Studios has yet-to-confirm anything, and if true, this would obviously be a major development. That said, the source does seem to have a decent track record. They recently reported on Don Cheadle appearing in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as War Machine, which was later confirmed by Cheadle himself, and also shared the news that Josh Brolin was set to reprise his role as Thanos in Eternals (and possibly as Cable in Deadpool 3). However, it'll probably be a while before we get any sort of confirmation on the latter story.

In the comics, these three characters along with Doctor Strange, Iron Man, and Black Bolt make up Marvel's Illuminati; a secret group of heroes that work together to share information in order to prevent future disasters. If they are, in fact, being introduced in the Doctor Strange sequel, then it's fair to assume that Strange may gather the leaders - minus the deceased Tony Stark and sidelined Inhuman - to gain their insight on how to stop a potential multiverse-shattering event.

Sam Raimi (Spider-Man trilogy) is in the director's chair with a screenplay from Jade Bartlett and Michael Waldron. Filming began in November in the United Kingdom, but it was put on hold in January due to a new lockdown in England. A restart was never officially announced, but it's believed to have resumed principal photography this month.

Benedict Cumberbatch is headlining the sequel as Doctor Stephen Strange with a supporting cast consisting of Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Benedict Wong as Master Wong, Rachel McAdams as Dr. Christine Palmer, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Karl Mordo, Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, and Adam Hugill as Rintrah (rumored).

Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters March 25, 2022.

If true, what would be the point, kind of takes away a lot of the cool factor when the biggest character is dead, one needs a reboot and the other 3 have never appeared in this universe

@dracula - Well, I would guess they wouldn't be forming the Illuminati in their first appearance. The Illuminati worked best when we discovered they had been meeting up and deciding how to handle threats for a long time without the reader knowing.

I suppose they could still say that, but it loses a LOT of its thunder when you're only meeting 3 of them for the first time.

And if they aren't doing the Illuminati in this, then like you said, what would be the point of these specific characters showing up in a Dr Strange movie? Xavier I get, because he and Strange worked together to try and help Wanda in the comics. And I guess Reed makes some sense too, because he knows a lot of science and alternate realities. But Namor really doesn't make sense.

I can see Charles being the mystery character at the end of WandaVision so I guess at least some of this makes sense

@Spike101 - I've also been thinking about a Charlie appearance in Wandavision. Super unlikely of course, but it would be very cool. And thinking about it through a comic book lense, which I'm sure Fiege does, it makes total sense.

@TheManWithoutFear - exactly. You could see him monitoring this from afar or being called in by someone to help out.

@Spike101 - If he has Cerebro he can probably sense Wanda is in trouble.

@Himura - yes exactly. It seems a very easy way to begin to introduce other X-Men characters in keeping with the comics.

I see this getting more and more in line with Jonathan Hickman's Avengers when they had 2 teams Avengers and Secret Avengers(Iluminati) dealing with the incursions separately.

I doubt it. There is an actual reason and representation for each of their founding members. Leaving out Black bolt, especially since inhumans are on the horizon would suck.

I'd rather see an origin story for Sub-Mariner b4 he's thrown into other story lines so I hope this isn't true and don't believe it

@TomK725 - set it during WWII and include some of the Invaders, even if they cop out and don’t use the name. Then bring it around to the modern era.

@Luigi - I've also seen Ralph Fiennes. TBH, I much more favor Joseph Fiennes. I'd prefer an American X and JF does a great accent and looks great bald. I can't say I've ever heard Ralph's American accent.

These rumors are out of control already. False hype. Real MCU fans know that these are just fanfictions from broke editors who have a Hulu payment past due. The only cameo I think many people would like to see is Ghost Rider. And it would work if Wandavision is indeed setting Mephisto up to be the villain in Doctor Strange 2.
