Scott Derrickson Isn't Ruling Anything Out With DOCTOR STRANGE 2; Teases The Limitless Possibilities
Even though Marvel has yet to officially announce a Doctor Strange sequel, we've already been treated to more than a few nuggets about what we could see in the film thanks to director Scott Derrickson.
Doctor Strange was one of Marvel's biggest gambits ever, with many wondering whether or not the general audience would accept such a uniquely obscure character. But luckily for Marvel, they absolutely did and the Scott Derrickson-directed feature skyrocketed itself to widespread critical acclaim and a worldwide box office haul of over $659.9 million.
The character, played by Academy Award-nominee & Primetime Emmy-winner Benedict Cumberbatch, is now expected to make an appearance in Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok before joining the Avengers, possibly full-time, in Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled Avengers 4 (both of which started filming this past Monday). As for his own second solo outing, it's been awfully quiet on that front (maybe too quiet) but considering that they announced a sequel to Peyton Reed's Ant-Man about three months after its theatrical release, an official announcement regarding Doctor Strange 2 could be just around the corner.
In the meantime, we're about a month away from the movie's Blu-ray release, and ComingSoon recently caught up with Derrickson to get an interesting bit of information regarding the inevitable sequel. When asked whether he would look to incorporate more horror/supernatural elements into the movie, something in the vein of his past work, Derrickson replied: “I wouldn’t necessarily rule anything out... That’s certainly where the comics went in the ’80s but I also think that was probably the weakest era of the comics. The alternate dimensions and possibilities of the multiverse that we set up with the first film already give limitless possibilities. What I will say is that the goal would not be to underutilize that, or to create something that was less innovative than the first ‘Doctor Strange.’ The comics, especially the Lee/Ditko comics, were always pushing into unexpectedly weird places and storylines. That has continued on into the current Doctor Strange comics, which are really great. So anything’s possible with Doctor Strange, I wouldn’t rule anything out.”
