STAR WARS: Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals Why He Has No Interest In Playing Grand Admiral Thrawn

Benedict Cumberbatch is a firm fam-favorite to play the villainous Grand Admiral Thrawn in live-action, but in a new interview, the Doctor Strange star reveals why he has no interest in the role...

For many Star Wars fans, Benedict Cumberbatch would be the ideal actor to bring Grand Admiral Thrawn to life in live-action. Unfortunately, the Doctor Strange star has no interest... and not because he dislikes the character.

Cumberbatch was asked about being a fan-favorite pick to play Thrawn during an interview with Collider, and wasn't actually sure who the villain was. When he was given some background on the character - and told that he'd have to play him under blue makeup - he made his feelings on the matter very clear.

"That’s a straight no from me, right now. There’s no way I want to be turned blue. I turned the air blue, very recently. No no, seriously, I have precious time with my children and I think sitting in a makeup chair and being painted blue, and the amount of time it would take to do that and then take it off at the end of the day might just… it’s not the right time in my life for that."

To be fair, he's probably only half serious here, and might well reconsider if he was ever actually given the opportunity to play Thrawn. And if not, there's always Lars Mikkelsen!

First introduced in Timothy Zahn’s Expanded Universe Heir to the Empire novel, the cerebral Grand Admiral made his animated debut in Star Wars Rebels back in 2016. The character disappeared along with Ezra Bridger in the series finale, so if the rumors that the planned Ahsoka Tano spinoff is going to focus on the search for the young force-wielder are true, it only makes sense that Thrawn would also have a role to play.

Who would be your pick to play Grand Admiral Thrawn in live-action? Let us know in the comments section.

I never understood why some people want this when you could get Lars Mikkelsen who brilliantly played him in Rebels back for live action.

@RyConn93 - because the general public have no idea who Lars Mikkelson is. Benedict is a brand name that people know and love as an actor. It’s easy to get behind him as Thrawn because he’s a big name and recognizable.

The Rebels actor is literally PERFECT for it. Never understood this fancast.

"Hey Benedict, want to spend hours in makeup being painted blue so you can put yourself in the crosshairs of Star Wars fans?"

Cumberbatch:

That's understandable. But I don't mind him saying no, Lars Mikkelsen is my eyes the perfect choice.

I thought everyone wanted Lars Mikkelsen back anyway?

@soberchimera -
Yeah, but that's not going to stop fans from needlessly fancasting him anyway. Before The Mandalorian, everyone was fancasting Boba Fett with actors like Taika Waititi and Manu Bennett, even though we already had Temuera Morrison. Now they're the same thing with Thrawn when we already have a perfect actor for Thrawn and it's just dumb.

He probably feels one evil galactic Villain is enough for a while

@ARMUS - Khan and Smaug are the roles that made me fall in love with him.

Also, ST: Into Darkness is my favorite Trek thanks to him.

@DARKSEIDDIS - They literally cast one of the whitest dudes in Hollywood as an Indian guy lol.

@DARKSEIDDIS - I must be honest and say I wasn't a fan of Into Darkness at all, also wasn't a fan of the Cumberbatch casting, Abrams and the poop master general-Alex Kurtzman should've cast an Asian or even a Latino actor to play the role, maybe Javier Bardem to follow on from Ricardo Montalban, nothing against Cumberbatch, he's also good and was good in Into Darkness, but it's not a film I like, glad you like it, lots do! He is also great as Smaug 🐲

@ARMUS - Naveen Andrews would've been perfect, especially since he worked with Abrams on Lost.

@ARMUS - I think they originally wanted Benecio Del Toro but he had other commitments.

If Ben Mendelsohn ever decides to play another SW character I think he'd be great for the part.

Michael Fassbender could make a pretty cool Thrawn.

He gives a completely valid reason for not wanting to do it, but sure, he's probably only "half-serious".
