Well, it seem we can continue speculating on who will play Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme as the studio has reportedly moved on from Her actor Joaquin Phoenix and continued its Doctor Strange search!

On the heels of rumors, or rather speculation, that Ethan Hawke is in contention to play the lead in Marvel's Doctor Strange adaptation, Deadline reports that talks with Joaquin Phoenix have come to an end. There is no specific reason given, but it's no secret that the three-time Oscar-nominated actor has been reluctant about signing on for blockbusters and franchises especially, having turned down the opportunity to play Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And with Marvel, Joaquin Phoenix would more than likely be signing a multi-pic deal to play the Sorcerer Supreme. Nonetheless, after over two months of pursuing the Her actor, the studio is "already getting into it with other actors," reveals the source. As for who could be on Marvel Studios' radar now, actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy, and Jared Leto were on the wishlist. Though the Ethan Hawke rumor has been debunked, he did express interest in the role recently.  Anyhow, Doctor Strange is directed by Scott Derrickson and is expected to hit theaters on July 8, 2016. What do you think?

Of all the people I wanted to see in an upcoming CBM, Phoenix was the one I was most excited for. I am really disappointed in this.

im glad i dont think he could have committed to the the role, but i dont like the idea of ethan hawke as doctor strange either.

it never seemed like his type of role given the multiple picture obligation and contracts he would need to sign which would inevitably take him away from doing edgier and more indie based films for which he's mostly known for.

I think he would've been cool for the role, but I don't want Marvel to sign anyone who isn't 100% down with having a franchise or making multiple appearances. What I'm trying to say is that I don't want a repeat of Edward Norton.

BTW, the article also says that the rumors behind Ethan Hawke getting the part are baseless.

Sucks, was looking forward to seeing Phoenix as Strange, but he probably wouldn't commit to multiple movie so it may be for the better....

I don't like Ethan Hawke as Strange. I hope they find someone else

Pheonix was my first pick, I think Jack Huston would be good for the role too

Am I the only one happy about this? I don't need Phoenix's picky ass in the MCU. I respect him as an actor and enjoy a lot of his films, but I don't want people who aren't fans leading these franchises. I want people who are happy to meet fans, go to conventions, who jump at the thought of a cross over.
