Joaquin Phoenix On Why He Tends To Pass On Blockbuster Roles Such As DOCTOR STRANGE

Fans should probably begin to resign themselves to the fact that we will never see Joaquin Phoenix in a superhero role... at least, not a big budget one. Here the actor talks a little more about why he tends to avoid those type of special effects-driven movies...

There's been several big budget projects that Joaquin Phoenix has been rumored to be attached to over the years, but the role he seems to have come closest to accepting is the one fans most wish he had: The Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange.

Phoenix has spoken in the past about his reasons for turning that - and effects-driven blockbusters in general - down, and in a new interview with Time Out London he elaborates. The highly in-demand actor says those type of films are simply not for him, as he doesn't believe he'd find acting in them to be "fulfilling."

"When I was younger I was probably a bit of a snob about [taking on blockbuster roles]. But they’ve gotten better. I’ve flirted with several of those films, having meetings and getting close, but ultimately it never felt like they’d really be fulfilling. There were too many requirements that went against my instincts for character. I’ve been spoiled. I’ve never had to make those compromises. I’ve not met a director yet with one of those films where we go through the script, they say: 'You know what, [frick] this set-piece, let’s focus on the character!' I understand, but it’s best I don’t do it."

That's not to say Phoenix isn't happy to be in the audience for those type of flicks, just that he doesn't believe he can "fulfill the obligations£ of starring in one. He seems to be a fan of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot in particular, and even praises its star Chris Pine as a genius. "I enjoy watching those movies," he adds. "Did you see the rebooted 'Star Trek'? That kid Chris Pine who plays Kirk is [frick]ing genius. I just don’t know if I want to have the experience of being in them. I’ve read some of those scripts and 75 percent is a description of some asteroid going through space."

Sounds like if studios want this guy for their tentpoles, they're going to need to ensure the scripts place the focus on character and story ahead of action and spectacle. What do you guys make of Phoenix's stance on this? Were you disappointed he didn't wind up playing Doctor Strange? Sound off below.

The dude is commited to his work, nothing wrong in that. But maybe if one movie is gonna be character focused, that's Dr. Strange.

too bad he turned down the role of Lex Luthor... We still have Jesse Eisenberg... NOT!

Certainly would've been intriguing to see him as Strange. Not sure it was a perfect fit, though... And hey, at least he's got the self-awareness to recognize that these roles just aren't for him.

Totally get where he's coming from... but it's not like everything he does make is good! See Inherent Vice?

In other words, he's too good for superhero films.

I have no issue with people not wanting to do Superhero films as long as they have nothing against them being made. More power to him.

Fair enough. If he knows he's not right for these films better to stay away.

It's a shame though. He was a great villain in Gladiator - certainly a blockbuster film.

I don't care for this guy, we lost the wrong Phoenix brother. Stay in your art house films, Joaquin.

The problem of superhero movies is that have the worst development of character, they need to put more time into the characters, not the action, not the joke, the development of character.

Even Ant Man an easy film to make, fail in something really easy, developing the relationship between Cassey and his mother, Cassey and his father, Cassey and his family.

In Ant Man they are only two scenes between Scott Lang and Maggie and the two are shit deepth shit, because Maggie dont have any fricking development.

So [frick] this shit, i hate this [frick]ing movies when they dont have the balls to do the things right and risk...

I like Joaquin Phoenix as an actor but he's done plenty of movies that I didn't care for. Because of his insistence on choosing roles that are "character driven" (aka weird) I avoid more of his movies than I seek out. So, he can be true to himself and I will be true to my tastes. He just won't get much of my money.

Not every actor is cut out for these types of movies. He's solid at what he does, and more importantly he recognizes it.

He would've been a GREAT Dr. Strange, but I can totally respect his reasons for not wanting to be a part of any big CBM franchises. He doesn't owe anything to anyone.

Actors who land superhero roles are so lucky if you think about it not only do you have an entire franchise but you also get ALOT more movie roles because studios know that superhero actors put people in chairs

I REALLY wanted him for the part. When I heard he was in talks I had an immediate rager. But I guess I respect his desire for the craft to be character and plot centric.

He would've definitely been a great Doctor Strange, but I'm so thrilled that we got Cumberbatch instead. He's gonna kill it!!!

Cucumbersalad was the last person I wanted to see as Strange.I never got his appeal. His only decent character was Smaug and even then I didn't consider it to be anything special. But I suppose his rabid fans will make marvel money

he would have been an awesome Wolverine, and much closer to the comics.

Not gonna ever happen, for obvious reasons. sadly

I get his reasoning... But has he ever thought of the development of a character through multiple films? I mean he does one and done characters because his films usually don't have sequels. Having a character grow or mature through two or three films could be interesting to him. He just needs to view it from a different angle.

Never been a fan of Joaquin. He's a great actor, but I tend to not enjoy his films. I'm certainly not sold on Cumberbatch as Strange, though. I still wish they'd have gone with Luke Evans. His screen presence just seems right for Strange. Oh well, hopefully I'll get to see him again in a Dracula Untold sequel.

With Strange, it seems like he liked the script and direction, but was loathe to accept the multi-picture deal/cameos/nonsense. I wonder what happened with Batman v Superman (he was offered Luthor first and passed). Maybe he read the pre-Terrio script?

Would have loved him in that part, but I get why he eschews blockbusters. Better to know yourself and turn it down than arrive on set and act like a diva (a la Edward Norton in Incredible Hulk).
