The latest news involving Marvel/Disney today was the possibility of the duo placing short films in front of feature films, to introduce less known characters to general audiences.
One of those less known characters, "Dr. Strange" seems to be going further with a feature film, with Deadline reporting...

Marvel Studios has hired Conan scribes Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to write Dr. Strange, marking forward progress on a long-gestating superhero property

Dr. Strange was created by Stan "the Man" Lee in and artist Steve Ditko. Steven Strange was a New York surgeon robbed of his touch after a car accident. After a stint as a wandering derelict, he found his way to a healer in the Himalayas, where he learned to tap into psychic powers to battle evil wizards and other wrongdoers. His mind is his weapon, rather than the brute force that distinguish most memorable Marvel heroes.

Marvel Studios currently has "Thor", "Captain America: The First Avenger", and of course "The Avengers" in the works. And after, the studio has one more film committed to be distributed through Paramount which will most likely be a third "Iron Man" film. Plus Marvel is separately working on film for "Runaways" as well as "Ant-Man", with Edgar Wright tapped to direct. Marvel is making the deal with the writers' reps at Gersh and Underground and they should get going on Dr. Strange shortly.

DCMF Like Ant-Man & Iron Fist, Dr. Strange is considered a D or C-list character, which means he isn't known much in the comic/hero world. So Marvel making the "Sorcerer Supreme" a feature film, is taking a gamble, box office wise. But it seemed to work for Iron Man, so who knows.

Including who should play Doctor Strange, What do you think?

This is GREAT news! I've been curious to see how a big screen adaption of Doctor Strange would be. I wonder if the Conan writers are any good.. Hope Marvel knows what they're doing.

Dr. Strange movie news makes me happy in the pants.

Have these guys written anything other than Conan, considering that hasn't come out yet?

Please God let Del Toro direct this!

They should've done Dr. Strange instead of The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

I'm a huge Doctor Strange fan and would love to see a movie - the writers of Conan though? That movie looks crap but that's only going by the cast and pictures released so far so I guess it's not fair to judge them for writing that until it's actually released and we can see whether the story is any good! Anyway, great find DCMF!

Oh, and teabag's choice of Joseph Fiennes to play the Doctor is PERFECT! [frick] Neeson and Depp..! :P

Q: Will Dr. Strange be first Marvel Hero to get film under Disney?
A: No

But if del Toro did it . . . Awesome!!! No one is better suited for the job. Is Dr.Strange really considered a C or D level character? He's got to be featured almost as frequently as Iron Man.

Sweet news. Long time discussion amongst my comic book buddies was who would make a good Dr. Strange on screen..... let the fan casting begin.

Well, just found out that there was a straight to TV Dr. Strange movie in '78. Maybe if it did better he would been on the A list or at least the B list...

Neeson is my ultimate dream pick for Strange, but they're probably doing more of an origin, so in that case, my vote goes to Clive Owen. Great actor, great hero (Children of Men, King Arthur), bad ass, and as seen in the pic below, totally nails the Doc Strange look:

The cool thing about Strange is that he doesn't have to played by some huge meathead! But, after the Venture Brothers cartoon, I have that Dr. Orpheus voice in my head every time I read the guy.

I love Doctor Strange, but it hasn't been able to carry a solid comic book run for over a decade now, and he probably won't be able to carry a full-length movie.
The only options would be either to get a huge box-office monster of an actor (i.e. Johnny Depp), or save their money and make a relatively cheap but good movie in order to cover their costs.
Either way, Doctor Strange is, unfortunately, no blockbuster.

@ Upupandaway: I fricking LOVE Dr. Orpheus!!! - though, not in a gay way...

But Dr. Strange will rock if done well and here's praying for Del Toro!!!!!! He rocks at what ever he's done. Not bad film to date!

@madhatta- I have to respectfully disagree. While Doctor Strange might not work that well for the violent superhero loving crowd, now is the perfect time to capitalize on the interest into supernatural characters on movie screens (Twilight, Harry Potter, etc.). I'm not saying that Strange should be like those movies, but that it can definitely appeal to some of that market for more mass appeal. Add Clea in there for a love interest/female bada$$ and you have the potential for good earnings.

The writers also did a draft of Jon Favreau's Cowboy and Aliens.
