"This is not going to be twenty-minutes of him being a doctor" - Devin Faraci
Back in June and July of 2013, Latino Review posted a couple of breakdowns regarding the Dr. Strange script that was written by Joshua Oppenheimer in 2010. Since then, Marvel has changed their Dr. Strange movie plans. They've recently hired Scott Derrickson ("Deliver Us From Evil") to direct it and hired screenwriter Jon Spaihts ("Prometheus") to work on the screenplay. Devin Faraci of Badass Digest appeared on Meet The Movie Press alongside Mark Reilly and Jeff Sneider. There, he revealed, Dr. Strange is not an origin story.

"So, for Dr. Strange they've had a script in-house forever. It is a pretty standard origin story for Doctor Strange. It's got Baron Mordo as the bad guy. That's all gone. Marvel's new thing is no more origin stories. So, Dr. Strange movie no longer has an origin. It begins in medias res. It has Dr. Strange already established as the Sorcerer Supreme. It is a totally new script. Jon Spaihts is working totally new, On his own, without any of the previous stuff. Not even touching the previous script." - Devin Faraci

This is stupid. I would agree with the idea if this was a more popular hero like Spider-Man or Batman but this is a hero whose story a lot of people don't know about.

I dont think doing this with Doctor Strange is a good idea.

Well I guess it'll be similar to what both Thor and The Incredibke Hulk did. Honestly I don't think it'll make or break the film but it's always a great experience seeing heroes donning their costume for the first time:

-Stark Suiting up in the Mark 3 Armor
-Cap getting his circular shield
-Guardians all walking down that Hallway together for the first time

Etc. I'm sure it'll still be a film to remember but I was looking forward towards seeing it all fleshed out from the very beginning.

But Feige said it WOULD be an "classic Marvel origin story"...

Origin stories get a bad rep because of all the reboots, that said I'm a bit disappointed in this, I thought Dr.Strange would of made a good origin story and I think the character will be missing a little bit of context if he's not seen as the arrogant surgeon who goes through the trauma of losing his career through injury and going on a spiritual quest.

That's a (in my opinion) very stupid movie. I personally am not that into reading comics so if I don't read his origin story at all before the movie I, like most others, won't really know who the character is & he won't have proper development in my eyes. I'm not too keen on this decision...

"how will five year olds know whats going on since they cant read comics so much explaining to do to a five year old mind"
They're five year olds, they don't need, or want, some deep explanation behind it, even if they do, I bet that his origin story will be mentioned at some point.

Then again, this would be kinda faithful to the comics, since Strange's first few stories started with him already being the Master of Magic and shit, and we only got his origin later.

Still, Feige said it would be an origin story and I'm a fan of Strange's origin so I'll wait and see on this one.

Until another source confirms this, I'm not buying this. Feige seemed very interested in Strange's origin story. Maybe it's been altered and the movie will tell the origin in an abbreviated way but I don't see Strange's first movie isn't going to explain HOW he became a master of the mystic arts. To ignore that is just plain stupid.

I also don't see Marvel not doing origin stories -especially when you have one that is so elaborate as Dr. Strange.

However, I will agree, that doing this with Doctor Strange is a bad idea. Doctor Strange will be introducing a whole new part of the universe (Supernatural). Doing this with a character such as Batman, Spider-Man, and even Superman would be a better idea.

@DylanTBest You know what he means. The general audience won't have read a Doctor Strange comic book before, so why should they care about the character right off the bat? They won't know anything about him.

Bad idea if true. Doctor Strange has an orgin that's tailor-made for the big screen. Egotistical neurosurgeon who loses his ability to perform surgery? I would feel cheated if I don't see his backstory in the movie.
Phronesis
Phronesis - 8/16/2014, 8:53 PM
Well, a very loose adaption of his origin was already told in Batman Begins :P

But seriously, I don't know about this. This could be the "Iron Man" in terms of a beginning story for this character.

If they have a very good script, the origin could be easily explained by flashbacks, just like in the Into Shamballa comic book, which is a master piece IMO. All depends on the script.
TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 8/16/2014, 8:55 PM
Yeah, I gotta be honest here. The only way I really knew anything about Dr.Strange is from that Marvel animated film released for him back in 2007. I also knew a tid bit about him from Ultimate Alliance as well, oh yeah and the 90s Spider-Man cartoon as well.

Dr Strange is the B list character that has probably the best origin story.
UltimateCookie
UltimateCookie - 8/16/2014, 8:58 PM
With the right direction I could see Strange's origin being explained in flashbacks, nightmares, etc.
