Tilda Swinton Confirms DOCTOR STRANGE Role; Teases Different Direction To Other Marvel Movies

Marvel won't be happy about this! Tilda Swinton has now confirmed that she will appear in Doctor Strange as The Ancient One, and talks here about her excitement to join this Cinematic Universe, as well as touching on what makes this movie different from previous efforts...

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Tilda Swinton was in talks to join the cast of Doctor Strange as The Ancient One. As great as it was to find out someone as talented as the We Need To Talk About Kevin actress might be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, quite a fuss was made about the decision to cast somone who looks so different to the comic book version (in pretty much every way, from race to gender). However, Kevin Feige would later explain that "The Ancient One" is just a mantle, and Swinton has now CONFIRMED that she's set to appear in Scott Derrickson's movie.

"We’re so far in talks that we’re not talking any more [laughs]. It’s done. I just really liked the premise of this and the idea of playing this character. I’m a Marvel fan and I think this particular world that Doctor Strange goes into is really, really, really exciting. I’m really interested as both an actor and a fan to see what’s done in this particular world." How will Doctor Strange differ to previous Marvel movies? Well, it sounds like it might be the one to finally break the formula which critics are beginning to tear into more and more with every new release. "It’s all about creativity. It’s not about everything exploding at the end. It’s about something very different. The idea of playing The Ancient One is really just too tickling. I can’t say no to that!" What do you think?

I know this is supposed to be a controversial casting...but given how stereotypical and potentially troubling it probably would've been to keep this accurate and have an Asian portray this role, plus seeing how talented Tilda Swinton is as an actress, I'm 100% on board with this. Awesome news.

Yes it IS stereotypical to cast Asians in such obvious roles.

BUT, I do hope they cast SOME Asian actors, given a majority of the supporting characters in Dr. Strange are Asian.

And I'm sure everyone will consider this to be whitewashing, but that's why I also hope there's PLENTY of supporting characters who are people of color (I do think there needs to be an Asian presence in more movies, no doubt) cast in significant, but less stereotypical roles.

This was a lose-lose situation right from the start, so I think Feige did the best with what he had.

Swinton killed it in the Constantine movie as Gabriel. They played with the idea of an androgynous angel which was genius. I'm sure she'll do well, as long as the giver the deserved screen time that she deserves and not to some comedic relief.

She's a great actress, don't get me wrong and I don't care if Marvel gender swap their characters, what I'm not thrilled about is always someone actor/director/staff from Marvel Studios says: "it's something different" it end being the same over the top and forced humor... so we will see.

She may be one of the best actresses out there, but it would be nice if these movies could cast more asian actors too.
