EDITORIAL: MARVELITES vs. NOLANITES And Why Enough Is Enough

An editorial looking into why the feud between 'Marvelites' and 'Nolanites' could ruin what should be a celebrated year for the super-hero genre...

With every new day the war rages on. The Avengers versus The Dark Knight Rises. Marvel versus DC. And most annoyingly, Marvelites versus Nolanites.

The truth of the matter is that neither Marvelites or Nolanites deserve the attention of the few of us able to avoid such obsessive attachments that cause others to act with hatred and abuse.

Both The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises were great movies, and as equally, both were heavily flawed in very different ways. The Avengers lacked emotional depth whereas delivered spectacular action, and The Dark Knight Rises in pushing the epic action story became laden with plot-holes and struggled to breathe amongst an overly large cast ensemble.

I do not believe there should be no argument as to which was a better movie and which was more successful in the way it wanted to portray the super-hero genre, but the extent to which this argument has become abusive and vicious makes for a claim that this argument should cease with immediate effect.

What I believe was once a friendly-natured debate of ideas and opinions, has now blown out of all proportion into an escalating feud of two rather obsessive and overly aggressive fan allegiances.

But what of us who don’t align ourselves to one side or the other, those of us able to appreciate both the good and bad whilst contributing intelligent argument to support a certain claim for one’s predominance over its rival, in one or more aspects of performance.

The rivalry that was once, what feels like an eternity ago, interesting and enjoyable, is now so poisoned by obsession that both movies have suffered.

The negativity from Marvelites concerning The Dark Knight Rises, and Nolanites concerning The Avengers, makes for a war of words that does nothing to boost either film’s reputation.

Both movies were incredible achievements in cinema-making and each were big moments for the genre, yet what should be a celebrated year for us fans has been tainted by the unnecessary and childish arguments of some, that persist each day over The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises.

In essence, neither those considered Marvelites nor Nolanites are true fans, which they themselves would so desperately claim themselves to be. A true fan is one who can love something or someone through their weakness and downfalls, able to admit to them, but continue to support them and love them for their successes. Marvelites and Nolanites see only the good and that is where this apparent ‘war’ has evolved from. Their at times pathetic inability to admit to flaws in the movie/side of their choice is what has brought down the good name of comic book and super-hero movie fans. Debate and peaceful argument is completely within reason, but not in the aggressive nature used by Marvelites and Nolanites.

In reality, Marvelites and Nolanites - and the arguments they so desperately pursue - are just as, if not more childish, than those fans of the Twilight series who argue over Edward and Jacob. Team Edward versus Team Jacob. Team Marvel versus Team Nolan. Who would have ever thought making that comparison between fan-bases would be within reason?

Unfortunately, now it is, and I for one find that very worrying indeed.

Fanboy wars are bullshit in general. They do nothing but show how idiotic both sides can be and this is no different.

I hate both those words, marvelite and nolanite are way overused, along with epic, nuff said, just sayin. To pick sides in this day and age of comic movies is dumb. It took so long to get these movies into the spotlight and now people are turning it into a sport, which I don't get ecause a lot of you on here bitch about hating sports. I don't get it.

There is only going to be people who go on about this kind of stuff. They get off on the imaginary feud they are trying to create. I just ignore it. When the comments or articles just turn into bashing something whether I just move on. Really though . . Aren't we all on this site because we are comic book fans or at least fans of comic book and genre movies?? I like all kinds of types of movies, but just because I prefer Dark Knight Rises to The Avengers doesn't mean that I think you are wrong or stupid for preferring The Avengers. That's just nonsense. Way too much of that around here. Also I find it dumb when people jump all over the hate on something, before they even see anything from the movie. Everything about it is horrible and will suck until they see a trailer or the actual movie and then suddenly it's the best thing ever. Just wait until you see something from the movie before you jump all over it.

Best way to settle the feud is for Nolan and Whedon to roll up their sleeves and duke it out H2H holy [frick] that would be epic. Have Snyder do the visuals with his slowmo. A slowmo shot of Nolan punching Whedon or vice versa.

I know it sounds ridiculous but i'd love to watch that. But they can't damage each other too much, we still need more movies ;P

i am a fan of both DC and marvel and i think they should just get along so what if you dont like DC and your a big a marvel just listen to what the DC fans say and get along..-__- both them debate whether batman or iron man would win in a fight or which movie was better the Avengers or TDKR...

What's really sad when we think about it is- this "Nolanite vs. Marvelite" war will continue for another full year. Technically the Superman reboot is also a Nolan film- he approved of the story, he rushed it to WB and got the project off the ground, he hand-picked Snyder...

"Nolanite's" still have this film in addition to the bat-trilogy. So, we have anotger year of bullshit wars.

How could you not think it was an attack on me?

Your comment accomplished nothing but almost start a completely pointless argument. Your comment wasn't needed.

Nolanites which praise a director for his brilliant films isn't a bad thing. Marvelites on the other hand, is pretty much a bad thing, especially if you're CBM. It means you are not a comic book fan and a company shill.

But I agree. The hate from both is stupid. It's just fun an games for them.

just to let anyone know who doesn't already know - no one in the actual real world uses or knows about the terms "nolanite" or "marvelite"

i'll give "mavelite" a big MAYBE. only because that's how stan lee used to sign off on his comics if it wan't "true believers"

@SotoJuiceMan

If someone is a huge fan that isn't a problem. It's when they become so obsessed with whichever side they're on that they start abusing others who disagree with them and a huge argument starts.

Debating is fine but most of the arguments digress into insulting each other and making it personal. That, my friends, is called immaturity and cowardice. Anyone can be tough on a message board!

The difference is, NOLANITES easily get offended and defensive everytime someone has a thought of criticism about his movies (most particularly his BATMAN films). NOLAN FANS are the opposite
CBMJamie
CBMJamie - 8/2/2012, 10:14 AM
@dezdigi

Exactly! I've seen a number of articles where there has been good, positive debate without petty arguing but in most instances, there is that childish fighting going on.

@SageMode

I would agree with you that those on the side of Nolan do get offended far more easily than those on 'Team Marvel'.

Funny how the point of this well-written article is to end the nolanite/marvelite feud. Yet here we have Sagemode trashing "nolanites" as usual.

If Sagemode thinks nolanites get more easily offended, i'd say marvelites troll more. Sagemode and Intruder alone have trolled this site more than anyone. Hell, I never really comment in marvel articles let alone to start fights. But Intruder and Sagemode have gone into nearly every batman article just to start trashtalk
CBMJamie
CBMJamie - 8/2/2012, 11:29 AM
@LP4

You are correct. It goes hand in hand that if Nolanites are more easily offended that more of the hating is being done by Marvelites, which I think is about fair.

And thank you for the compliment.
CBMJamie
CBMJamie - 8/2/2012, 11:55 AM
@SotoJuiceMan

You are basically (and quite unbelievably) saying that because we're on the internet you can say whatever you like and be as abusive as you like to anyone simply because you're not actually with them.

There is a BIG difference between debating and arguing. What started off as debating has escalated into quite aggressive arguing and it is my personal belief that it should stop.

And as for Grif, everyone knows it is tongue-in-cheek humour with him. But admittedly, he does annoy me. He is obviously an attention seeker.

Ive never seen a Marvelite on this site who thinks that every single movie that's based on a Marvel property is a golden standard and readies their pitchforks and torches if you mention any faults in them.......

If you see them, please point them out.

breakUbatman
breakUbatman - 8/3/2012, 1:52 AM
@SageMode

I agree but to add to that how many articles have you seen stating why you should hate a Marvel movie or point out all the flaws. Not even bad movies like Ghost Rider and Green Lantern got that treatment. 4 years later and people were going at TDK

All 'ites are wishy washy anyway before this year Nolanites were all box office and critical acclaim and Marvelites said all that didn't matter critics sucked and movies were meant to be fun, Nolan wasn't a god and it was an insult to compare him to Hitchcock, Fincher etc.

Then Avengers happened

Suddenly its all about the numbers and critics for Marvelites and some go as far as to say Best Movie Ever making Whedon better than every director ever. Nolanites then said its not about money and critics its about the story

Though it's odd that people were ready to tear Modine a new one when he dissed The Avengers but were cool with Downey saying F@*k DC. Guess this community was more rational back then.
