Move Batman v Superman to April?

Move Batman v Superman to April?

Somebody with that May 6, 2016 release date needs to move. Batman v Superman may very well gain A LOT by doing so.

First, I'm sorry for making a few editorials lately, but I've stumbled across this and had to share because I think there is something to it.  Scott Mendelson of Forbes.com wrote a piece about how Batman v Superman may benefit greatly by moving up a month to April.  He gives compelling arguments with box office numbers to back up his claim.

He brought it up because of Captain America: The Winter Soldier's overall success compared to Amazing Spider-Man 2.  I think it is safe to say that Captain America 2 was a much better movie critically speaking.  Far better.  However, both currently are fairly close in box office earnings.  His claim is that there is a pattern of summer kick-off movies stealing the spot-light from presumed summer box office champions.  Just to highlight some big ones:

1996 - Twister vs. Mission: Impossible

1998 - Deep Impact vs. Godzilla

1999 - Matrix vs. Star Wars Episode 1

2002 - Spider-Man vs. Star Wars Episode 2

2008 - Iron Man vs. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

*Indiana Jones was supposed to rule that summer, of course The Dark Knight ended up killing everything, but the point is Iron Man really took the spot light away from Indiana Jones.  Interesting thing about The Dark Knight though....

2012 - Avengers vs. The Dark Knight Rises

*Both of these films were criticially praised and both made heaps of money.  NOBODY anticipated the Avengers doing so well and there was no way in hell Rises was going to match that.  Avengers is the clear winner coming out of that summer.

When reading his arguments for each of these, it makes sense.  Batman v Superman could do amazing if it moved to April.

What if it sucks?  It has three or four weeks to (most likely) dominate the box office until Cap 3 comes out.  If it opens the same day as Cap 3, it will definitely win the first weekend, but bad word of mouth will cause it to lose ground the next weekend and beyond.  Let's not forget all the other 100 movies coming out that summer.

What if its awesome?  It has three or four weeks to dominate the box office and may very well take some from Cap 3.  Granted, it won't beat Cap 3 when it would eventually open, but it will take a chunk from it.  If opened on the same day, both movies suffer, but Cap 3 has the least to lose honestly.

That is assuming Cap 3 is going to be amazing which I'm sure it will be.  If Cap 3 sucks, well, that's another story.  Check the link out and see for yourself.  It is quite interesting.

I agree one should move, as for who? I don't care much.
Probably Cap, they've proved Cap can KILL at the box office in April so why not make Cap an April release every new movie?

Also, I don't doubt BvS will be number 1, even if Cap2 is the better movie which judging by (Cap2 > Man of Steel) Batman v Superman has two huge iconic heroes in a team-up movie. It's gonna make lots of $ and even though Marvel can afford a bit of a profit loss (not much because that is obviously gonna do well) doesn't mean they want a loss.

CherryBomb is right.

Also TDKR did poorly, not because of Avengers' success, but because at one of them midnight premieres there was a massacre.

The reddest hood tdkr took over a billion without 3d. Its one of the most succesful movies ever made and one of only 3 of movies to hit billion mark without 3d

I think cap 3 should be moved to april if it was it would do even more than cap 2. If it maintains current release date it will struggle to even match cap2. Dont forget the main reason for cap 2 success was lack of competition it basically had 3 weeks without competition, u hesrd of in summer. If it was released now it would struggle to do half of what its done.

@MrSoto

I'm not trying to make box office predictions, but I'm just saying it could do what tonytony says. I think the article is saying that too.

I've always felt Dawn of Justice should move to early April. I wrote an editorial on it myself. Warner Bros would have a whole month to make its money without having to worry about other studio tentpoles. I don't see it having the impact on Cap 3 the Forbes article is talking about, mainly because it's a quality franchise and it'll be a follow up to Avengers, much like Iron Man 3 was.

If BvS doesn't move to April it should take the July 2016 spot before someone else does.

*sigh* more of this "TWS did well because of no competition" nonsense *sigh*

This is total, complete, utter, nonsense. People don't go see a movie unless they want to see it, it doesn't matter if it has competition or not. They just stay home or find something else to do. You people act like going to see a movie is the only option for entertainment, it's not. And TWS only had the legs that it had because people either wanted to see it again, or told their friends about it and got them to go see it.

If TWS and TASM 2 had switched release dates, TWS would've made over $100 million its opening weekend, and would have at least made $800 million. Being released in April did hurt it a little. For one, it was released on Final Four weekend, which undoubtedly hurt it's box office on its first Saturday, and on its first Monday too. If TWS had opened on Memorial Day weekend instead of DoFP, it probably would have made $130-140 million over the 4-day weekend.

So no, neither film should move to April. What should happen is that Cap 3 should move to July 4th, which would be natural anyway. Do that, and both films, if they're good enough, might have a shot at a billion.

A lot can happen between now and then.

Rumour is that Spidey 3 might be delayed. One of them might take that date. We don't know yet.

But I truly think the April date is more valuable than May. During the Jan-March dry spell, all I could think about what was the next big blockbuster, which was Cap. Plus there's little competition for the rest of the month.

Best to get in at the beginning of the summer before blockbuster fatigue kicks in.

It is hard to use prior movies to determine the best course of action though. So many variables.

If WB decide to move the second time, they'll become a big target of media and CBM jokes. Well, they asked for it. They got it.

Dat picture though.
Anyway, I think Cap3 should move to April. It may look as a sign of fear but it's the smartest thing Marvel can do, imo.

I really think BvS will be pulled to winter of 2015. Snyder & Co. will have finished filming by the end of this year or early next which gives the studio several months for post-production. Also WB usually has a big-budget film released in December.

When I said poorly I met in relation to Avengers. I think it would've beaten Avengers if all things went well.
