The Hulk is one of the best characters in comic book history and arguably the best that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby ever created. When Stan Lee and Jack Kirby began to develop the idea for the Hulk they had in mind horror classics like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde also Frankenstein which they drew their themes from to create the character. So at the core of the story behind the creation of the Hulk must lay a terrible tragedy since Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Henry Jekyll is the inspiration for the story. Therefore anyone who plays the role of Bruce Banner must understand that he is a tragic character and there needs to be a degree of tragedy in his portrayal. He is also a man in love and he loves Betty Ross with everything she is the center of his universe but he cannot be with her because he is living with a dreadful curse and that is the tragedy behind Bruce Banner. As for the Hulk he is a simple character because he is destruction personified a creature capable of unutterable destruction either for good or for evil. The Hulk has had two big screen adaptions, an iconic TV show as well as appearing in this summer's blockbuster The Avengers. Here is a list of actors who did the best job of portraying the character of the Bruce Banner/Hulk.

1. Edward Norton: He is the highest profile actor to play the role of Bruce Banner and one of the most intense actors besides Anthony Hopkins to star in a Marvel film in the past four years. His portrayal of Bruce Banner is the closest to the comics we have seen so far. For one he is fugitive running from the U.S government and has that mentality of constantly looking over his shoulder because he does not know who may be looking for him. When you think of the character let's face facts Bruce Banner is a man who has been running for years. Second his fear of the Hulk is very much real in the movie he does everything he can to contain the Hulk in fact he lets factor workers rough him up because he is afraid of what the Hulk might do. In the comics Bruce is both afraid of and hates the Hulk because he has destroyed his life and is keeping him from Betty. In the movie as Norton transforms into the Hulk you can see the anxiety in his eyes. Finally Bruce Banner is a physicist, not a medical doctor or a geek although he can use technical jargon but the way he speaks comes from him being an brilliant nuclear physicist. Norton so far is the best scientist because most of the movie is centered around him trying to cure his gamma poisoned blood therefore getting rid of the Hulk. What is best about Edward Norton's Bruce Banner is that he is a man with a heart and a purpose.

2. Bill Bixby: Just looking at the pilot of the 1978 TV series The Incredible Hulk it is clear that he gives the best performance of Banner hands down. It's unbelievable he is like a man on fire and he is proof that Hollywood doesn't make actors like they use to. His performance is so good that I encourage anyone with Netflix to go back and watch that pilot episode because in that he masterfully plays a man that is tormented by the loss of his wife in an accident and is looking for answers. The sheer depth and emotion to his portrayal of Banner is both thrilling and refreshing also no actor has since equaled his performance in that show. I would rank him as the best but the show is so loosely based on the comics that it is hard to compare it to the movies in fact the show portrays Banner as a behavioral research doctor instead of a physicist. Credit also must be given to Bixby for playing the role of Banner longer than any actor.

3. Mark Ruffalo: As Bruce Banner he is without question the coolest and the most fun to watch on screen. He also portrays a Banner that is calm and in control of his emotional state in fact throughout most of the movie he is in control of himself even letting Tony Stark poke him to see if he could get him angry. He is also a great scientist in the film he is looking for gamma signatures that is being emitted from a piece of alien technology called the tesseract. The problem with his character is that he is just so calm and collect that one can rename his character Bruce Banner the Zen Master because almost nothing gets to the guy. He doesn't have to wear a heart monitor to watch the rise in his blood pressure, nor do breathing techniques as well as he can have fun at the playboy mansion without worrying about getting too excited because is so just completely carefree. There are two times in the movie where he transforms into the Hulk and in both of those occasions he seems more in control of himself than any person who has ever played Bruce Banner. I know a lot of people love his portrayal of Bruce banner but they must ask themselves three questions. 1. Does Mark Ruffalo Bruce Banner look like a guy who has been running from the U.S government for years? 2. To what degree does his banner hate or fear the Hulk and how does he reasonably try to contain the Hulk? 3. Is he a man with a purpose or heart? For example does he desire to find cure for his gamma poisoning or does desire be with Betty? If you answer no to any one these questions then his Banner is not the best.

4. Eric Bana: There is not much that I can comment on his portrayal of Bruce Banner because it's a pretty standard issue performance of the character. He is a brilliant young scientist that falls in love and meets with an unfortunate accident that transforms him into a giant green monster. He goes on the run when he finds out that General Ross wants to use and replicate the Hulk. He does a good job in the role my criticism of him is that he does not go beyond that and try to capture the audience. There is nothing about his Bruce Banner that stands out in any way.

In this article I did not discuss the Hulk because he is such a simple character that it is almost impossible to portray him in wrong way. The "Hulk smash" that's what he does and that's what he is about to mess that up takes a director with super human incompetence. We can discuss what action sequences that involve the Hulk are better or what CGI Hulk and in Lou Ferrigno's case which man looks closer to the comics but at heart they do the same thing which again is smash. No matter what your personal opinion is of the the hulk or who's your favorite we are certain to see him for years to come.

I would probably say Norton is the best that is because I saw him more than I did Ruffalo. Ruffalo only had two Hulk out scenes and he just seemed kind of whinny to. Maybe my opinion would change if they made an entire movie with Ruffalo as Banner and not just a supportong character.

I like the write up, and I love how the editorials are starting to somewhat diversify again.

I'm a lifelong Hulk fan. My parents used comics as a tool to teach me how to read and I remember it like it was yesterday when my dad fanned out a few of his favorite titles for me to choose from. X-Men and Hulk were what I chose, over Avengers, FF, Spidey, Batman, all others. So I've been reading Hulk longer than many CBMer's have been alive(roughly 23 years now). That said, Edward Norton has indeed given us the truest Banner to date.
I love Ruffalo too and Avengers isn't enough to see how he really captures the role and I wasn't crying when they cast him or when Norton dropped, though I was disheartened a bit by the latter. I definitely like the Ruffalo-Hulk better though, it looks more monstrous, he did great mo-cap, and was a total savage hero. I think the "Zen" thing you mention is part of his progression. Banner has been at this place in the comics, so it's fine and I think we should wait to see how it pans out. Your finer details are kinda unfair, Ruffalo was Banner/Hulk in an Avengers film, not his own, and taking that into consideration I think they did well alluding to what might be. If in the next Hulk solo outing these things aren't answered, then we can criticize on those terms.

I'm looking forward to Hulk sequels and I'm hoping for the Leader as the villain, who I'd actually like to see become a potential MCU recurrence. He's the best villain to battle for a Banner who can control the Hulk.

@SUPERBATSPIDERMAN: Bruce Banner only hulked out three times in "The Incredible Hulk". "The Avengers" managed two hulk outs, balanced other members of the superhero team, and was a much superior film to "The Incredible Hulk". Unless you didn't like "The Incredible Hulk", I don't see your point about "only two". Besides, this article is mainly focusing on the portrayals of Bruce Banner in the live-action medium.

Bill Bixby: Just looking at the pilot of the 1978 TV series The Incredible Hulk it is clear that he gives the best performance of Banner hands down.

I was watching that night, when it premiered, and have yet to see another actor capture the helplessness, determination, and caring that he exuded his entire time on that series. But yeah, he had way more time with Banner than any other actor. Norton was solid, and Ruffalo was too. Hard for me to judge Bana properly, as I really was not a fan of that Ang Lee flick, so have only seen it a few times compared to the others.

Bixby was the best from the get-go.

Bana is far and away the worst. He had the most build up and exposition regarding deeply seated anger and sadness...and the best he had was a constipated anger face. Oooo, don't make him angry.

Ruffalo has yet to have enough screen time to really delve into Banner. So far so good.

I don't think it's very fair to compare Ruffalo to Norton. One had an entire movie to himself and the other had a few scenes (that he completely stole, by the way). I think Ruffalo will eventually get his chance and then you can compare the two fairly.

If I may, I know it's a cartoon, but I really think the Hulk in Avengers EMH is really great too. I like that he is constantly at war with himself and even as the Hulk, he has emotions and talks more than most other portrayals. He is even funny.

All of the questions regarding Ruffalo's performace have been answered already. Do a quick research. For me, Ruffalo's the best Banner because he portrays a Banner that has eveolved, as a character. And Hulk stole the show, but it still was Ruffalo's performace (motion capture).

1. Perhaps he doesn't look like he's been running from the U.S. gvt for years, but he certainly acts like it, especially in his mistrust of SHIELD throughout the film. The subtle sense of nervousness, reservation, and even paranoia fits this. Plus your idea that he's 'not angry' just shows how you didn't understand his portrayal - he's quite obviously suppressing his anger throughout.

2. He is constantly trying to contain the Hulk and hates and resents him. The tone of his voice and his reference to him as 'The Other Guy' supports this - he's trying to deny Hulk's existence to himself. Also, when he says "I put a bullet in my mouth and the other guy spit it out" he sounds quite resentful, as if he hates the Hulk even for saving his life. And if you look even further into this portrayal, you can see that not only does this version of Banner hate the Hulk - he hates himself. Eventually, he learns to accept the Hulk as a part of him, and decides that if he can't get rid of the Hulk, he must use it as a force of good.

3. Yes, he's a man with purpose. His purpose is to help others (his work as a doctor in India and his return to New York to help the Avengers), and also to control his anger (and by extension, the Hulk). He's accepted that he may never be rid of the Hulk, so his new purpose is to learn about it and aim it.

Bill Bixby for me. Love the TV show. When his eyes go white... it just sends shivers down my spine. Thats what i miss in the recent movies. The green eyes are cool but i like white.

Can't wait for a Ruffalo solo movie.

You know what I hate about the failed suicide attempt from The Incredible Hulk and that line from Avengers is that it makes no sense.

"Realistically" speaking, in every single version of the character, it takes a good while for the transformation to occur. Even when Banner willingly transformed in The Avengers it wasn't instant, so how does he Hulk out faster than a speeding bullet?

Regarding portrayals I would say Bixby is the best, however I'd like a truer to comic version. Norton just seemed like a a standard fugitive to me though

I agree with this write up but mark ruffalo's performance and no he's not the running type but he's the man for the job, Mark as ACira said suppresses the "HULK" I mean the other guy. Mark's banner is the depressed side of banner and Norton is not that great of a depressed type.

Mark's banner is the one you'll see covering his face at an airport or a bus station, so the government won't find him so I agree and disagree.

@breakUbatman I'm guessing that the implication is that Bruce had an adrenaline rush in the lead up to pulling the trigger in the suicide attempt, meaning his transformation may have been triggered. Then, the initial injury caused by the bullet making contact with the inside of his mouth would cause the full transformation. His body would've already been denser by this time, so the bullet would've been slowed, then I imagine he would have sort of sucked it back into his mouth, healed up, and spit out the bullet.
Other than that, it's more or less suspension of disbelief. Plus we already know fatal injuries will trigger his transformation (i.e. when he jumps out of the helicopter in The Incredible Hulk).

ACira I guess that's the best way to view it.

In TIH though he transformed before he hit the ground, hence the crater - but I'll accept that as an explanation.

But I also hate that heart rate crap they pulled in TIH. Anger sets him off not his heart rate, following TIH logic Bruce can Hulk out simply out of excitement.
