The Legend of Drizzt Fan Fic: Part 1 - Homeland

The Legend of Drizzt Fan Fic: Part 1 - Homeland

R.A. Salvatore's Legend of Drizzt series has been adored by fantasy fans for over 20 years. I think it's about time for a movie! Here is my fan cast for Drizzt's origin story, Homeland!

By Runefyst - Dec 09, 2009 09:12 PM EST

It all started with a story called The Crystal Shard by R.A. Salvatore. Since the Crystal Shard's release in 1988, the series has turned into a fantasy phenomenon spanning 19 books (so far), a number of spinoff books, a few video game cameos, and a comic book series.

Chronologically, Drizzt's tale begins with the book Homeland, the first book of the Dark Elf trilogy.

In this book, we are introduced to Menzoberranzan, Drizzt's birthplace. We also meet the first figures that would shape Drizzt into the hero he is today..................

Drizzt Do'Urden - Luke Goss
The hero of our series. His lavender eyes and kind nature make him an anomaly among his evil race.

Zaknafein Do'Urden - Liam Neeson
Drizzt's father, mentor and first real friend. He is the weapons master of House Do'Urden. He is also the one drow who shares Drizzt's kind spirit but has found no escape from his existance.

Malice Do'Urden - Julia Roberts
Drizzt's mother, priestess of Lolth and Matron of House Do'Urden. She is working to increase the standing of her house through whatever means necessary.

Briza Do'Urden - Katherine Heigl
Drizzt's oldest sister and priestess of Lolth. The cruelest member of his family, Drizzt was raised to fear her snake-headed whip.

Maya Do'Urden - Kristen Bell
Drizzt's second-oldest sister and priestess of Lolth.

Vierna Do'Urden - Hayden Panettiere
The youngest of Drizzt's sisters, she also serves as his caretaker during his earlier years. She is Drizzt's only other sibling that shares Zaknafein's genes. During the years she raises Drizzt, she does show the occasional hint of kindness.

Dinin Do'Urden - Wentworth Miller
Drizzt's elder brother and Academy master. He killed Drizzt's oldest brother to become elderboy of the house and watches his back, expecting the same from Drizzt.

Nalfein Do'Urden - Zack Ward
Drizzt's oldest brother who meets his unfortunate end at the same time as Drizzt's birth.

Rizzen Do'Urden - Brad Douriff
The current patron of house Do'Urden.

Matron Yvonnel Baenre - Judi Dench
Matron mother of House Baenre, the city's first house making her the ruler of Menzoberranzan.

Berg'inyon Baenre - Orlando Bloom
One of Matron Baenre's sons, and Drizzt's rival at the drow Academy.

Methil - Voiced by Mark Hamill
Matron Baenre's advisor. Methil is an Illithid with tremendous powers of the mind.

Ginafae DeVir - Kristanna Loken
Matron mother of House DeVir whose members are all eliminated by House Do'Urden.

Alton DeVir - Tommy Flanagan
The sole survivor of House DeVir who swears revenge on House Do'Urden

SiNafay Hun'ett - Uma Thurman
Matron mother of House Hun'ett who plans to use Alton DeVir to destroy House Do'Urden.

Masoj Hun'ett
Son of SiNafay Hun'ett and master of Sorcere at the Academy. He teaches Drizzt for a short time and introduces him to Gwenwyvar, Drizzt's black panther. He also plots to kill Drizzt with Alton DeVir.

The Elf Child (Ellifain Tuuserail) – Abigail Breslin
During a drow raid on the surface, the cruelty of the dark elves is laid bare as they slaughter defenseless surface elves. During this raid, Drizzt makes a life-changing choice to save the elf child from suffering the same fate as her mother.

Belwar Dissengulp - Andy Serkis
Part of a gnome patrol that does battle with the dark elves and captures Drizzt.

And that is my cast for the first story of Drizzt's long tale. If you can think of any characters that I missed from Homeland, let me know, and I'll make sure to add them!

Also, keep an eye out for my next Legend of Drizzt Fan Fic: Part 2 - Exile.

Until then, cheers!

Salvatore is my favorite author of all time and the Drizzt books are utterly fantastic
so first I wanna say you are my new favorite person for this fancast

I agree with almost all of them except a couple:
1) julia roberts: i just cant see here being the enormous bitch that Matron Malice is. she is evil incarnate and puts Drizzt through ultimate hell. I would vote for Cate Blanchet. When she went evil in LOTR it was truly terrifying, although the two roles may seem too similar for her
2) andy serkis: i dont know why but it just doesnt sit right with me

some of the others were just great
judi dench, tommy flanagan, luke gross (who i [frick]ing love in both Blade 2 and Hellboy 2) and wentworth miller

good job sir and well done

realfirstavenger - Thank you! Salvatore is my absolute favorite as well, and there are so many stories to be told in his works so I figured I'd actually try to figure out who would be good to star in his series.

I know Julia Roberts usually plays in a nicer role, but she's such a good actress! I think she could put on the bitch hat & become Malice no problem.
I had a hard time with Belwar, but Andy Serkis is just so talented and can do a multitude of cool voices. When I put these 2 pics together, it just seemed to fit in my mind.
As for Cate Blanchet, I thought of her. But as soon as I saw her in LOTR, she instantly became Lady Alustriel in my mind so when I cast her, that's who I'm going to use.

Keep your eyes open for when I fancast Exile!!!

LEEE - I definitly recommend picking up some Drizzt books! The best to start with would be Homeland, the book I fancasted. If not Homeland, then The Crystal Shard is another good read.

I like them over Tolkien's works mainly because they just seem to flow better & are more action packed! :)

Who would you post as Jarlaxle? HE was key to the overthrow of the Do'Urden household... Plus aside from Drizzt and his close friends he is one of my favorites. Have you read the latest installment?

Leee777, this is one of the best sci/fantasy series and characters I have ever read. The depth in which Salvatore delivers his characters is incredible.

Great job and another vote to add Jarlaxle.

@t1simps I've read it. Loved though the end was sad.

@Lee777 Can't recommend the books enough.

Ever since DnD started making movies, live or animated, I have never understood why they didn't go with Drizzt's story.

Thanks guys!

@t1simps - Jarlaxe is coming, but he didn't actually appear in Homeland. Keep an eye out for my Exile fancast to see who I choose for Jarlaxle. ;)

Rune, I know I was impatient for Jarlaxle. He has become such a prominent figure in the mythos and he has such a potential for his own entire history to be written. I loved the hints Salvatore threw in about him in a few of the books. I have even come to like Entreri in the last few lol...
Runefyst
Runefyst - 12/10/2009, 3:01 PM
@t1simps - I hear ya there. I'd love to get some Jarlaxle/Entreri backstory from Salvatore. I wouldn't mind seeing where the hell Athrogate came from either, I like the crazy dwarf.
You didn't originally like Entreri? I think he's great, and he's probably had the most change throughout the series. I'm thinking hard on my choices for both Jarlaxle and Entreri, hopefully whatever I come up with doesn't dissapoint ;)

Also, to answer an earlier question, I havn't read the Ghost King yet. My friend is sending it to me so I'm waiting on him. In the meantime, I've been re-reading the series and am currently reading The Lone Drow. :)

Lee: The Dark Elf saga is awsome. I'm not sure how many Drizzt books there are, but I have arround 6 or 7 and absolutly love every one of them. Check them out.
Great cast Rune.

Juggy@ I was stunned by the ending! I assumed a big change would come but not that big!!! I won't spoil it for anyone who has not read it but, it was insane...

I am very happy to see this post as I have no outlet for my interest in the genre. I have collected over 150 books from this setting since the 80's and read and re-read every one multiple times. I also collected all (the ones I knew about anyway) of the video games they made from the world lol.
Runefyst
Runefyst - 12/10/2009, 7:02 PM
@t1simps - Wow, that's pretty awesome. I do love the Forgotten Realms setting but I really havn't read too much from it yet. I have read most of Salvatore's books, The War of the Spider Queen and a few others.

I do have some of the campain books for D&D and I just love the setting.

That being said, what story lines would you recommend?
t1simps
t1simps - 12/10/2009, 8:59 PM
an early one, starts with Waterdeep. About the fall of the gods. Called the Avatar trilogy. That is the trilogy that got me hooked back in the early 90s Nothing to do with Ang and airbending though lol. Have you read the cleric quintet? Another set by Salvatore. Great stuff. Hmm I need to go over some of my titles and send you a list. There are alot of good ones out there.
Runefyst
Runefyst - 12/10/2009, 10:10 PM
I have the Cleric Quintet but havn't actually finished it (can't remember why I stopped reading them....I think I'm on the 4th book)......I think I'm gonna get on that after I read the Ghost King.

One I did read that I quite enjoyed was Swordmage by Richard Baker... I havn't read the next part of the trilogy yet, but it was a pretty decent read.

I havn't actually read the Elminster books yet, what do you think of those ones?
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 12/11/2009, 11:53 AM
Guys @ Cheers i deff will pick it up, sounds pretty fantastic!!
juggy4711
juggy4711 - 12/11/2009, 6:21 PM
I could have sworn Jarlaxle was in homeland? Did Bregan Daerthe not appear until Exile?

The Elminster books are great.

The Avatar trilogy was written by Troy Denning under a pen name...Richard something or other. If you have never read them, Troy's Dark Sun books (and despite the setting errors, all other DS novels) are fabulous. DS is hands down the most original and my favorite DnD world.

I also recommend the books about Gromph's daughter by Elaine Cunningham I believe.

@Lee777 I highly recommend you start with Homeland. You won't regret it!!!!!!!!!

ETA @Rune Read the Erevis Cale books by Paul S Kemp. They are some of the best FR stuff I have read besides the LOD.

juggy4711
juggy4711 - 12/11/2009, 6:27 PM
@t1stimps Jarlaxle is awesome. Given the hints RAS has dropped I want a Jarlaxle prequel. That would be so incredible.
t1simps
t1simps - 12/12/2009, 2:38 AM
@juggy I agree with the Jarlaxle prequel. I am wondering if that is why Salvatore wrote Ghost King the way he did, to make room for J as a bigger player. Also was the pen name Richard Baker? This name has a ton of FR books out there.

@Rune Anything with Elminster is great. He is like the spiderman of magic. Keeping things light but he is probably one of the most feared magicusers in FR lore.
juggy4711
juggy4711 - 12/12/2009, 3:56 PM
@t1 nah it was Richard Awlinson. Baker is a great writer though. Unfortuantely I found the Avatar trilogy to be sub par with everthing else I have read by Denning

As for Jarlaxle I sure hope so. He's one of my favorite supporting cast members along with Artemis and Pwent. Wonder when we will see Entreri return?
t1simps
t1simps - 12/13/2009, 4:23 AM
Not sure about Entreri. I was surprised when he didn't pop in for the Ghost King. Salvatore has been pumping out Highwayman stuff and some others so he must have needed a break from FR. I also wouldn't have minded hearing from good 'ole Wulfgar, who has been conspicuously silent lately.
Runefyst
Runefyst - 12/13/2009, 2:16 PM
I started something with Erevis cale.....can't remember what it was called, but it seemed like he had a backstory going on so I didn't continue.

As for backstories, I wouldn't mind seeing a short story about what Pwent was up to after the fall of Mithril hall up until he joined up with Bruenor. :)

Hey Runefyst did you here in an interview R.A. Salvatore said if they made a movie of The Legend of Drizzt he'd want Vin Diesel to play Drizzt
Ryalsbane
Ryalsbane - 3/6/2010, 11:35 PM
Runefyst, I think your casting is spot on! However, I must agree with realfirstavenger on Julia Roberts. Yes, she is a superb actor and would be able to "get her bitch on", but it's her face that would ultimately make the personification fail, she's just too cutesy to be taken seriously. Cate Blanchet, on the other hand, as beautiful as she is, can produce a cold ruthless gaze that will chill you to the bone...even when she smiles.
Ryalsbane
Ryalsbane - 3/6/2010, 11:43 PM
Hawksblueyes, all totaled there 17 books in the Drizzt Do'Urden saga (and I've read them all!). The following is a list of titles and the best order to read them to get the most accurate chronology.

1. The Dark Elf Trilogy
I. Homeland
II. Exile
III. Sojourn

2. The Icewind Dale Trilogy
I. The Crystal Shard
II. Streams of Silver
III. The Halfling's Gem

3. Drizzt & Friends
I. The Legacy
II. Starless Night
III. Siege of Darkness
IV. Passage to Dawn

4. Paths of Darkness
I. The Silent Blade
II. The Spine of the World
III. Servant of the Shard
IV. Sea of Swords

5. The Hunter's Blades
I. The Thousand Orcs
II. The Lone Drow
III. The Two Swords

Ryalsbane - 3/6/2010, 11:57 PM
Krauser199. No way Vin Diesel would be even an acceptable choice to play Drizzt! In fact, my feelings on this are such that if they did chose Vin Diesel I wouldn't see it!

1. He's much too muscle bound to effectively represent an elf physically.

2. He's a mediocre actor and his ability to portray a character as complex and deep as Drizzt is seriously in question. He would likely be overshadowed by the rest of the cast.

3. Did I mention he's too big to be an elf? Bruenor Battlehammer in a later movie might work.

Oops! My bad Hawksblueyes. There is a new series, Transitions.

I. The Orc King
II. The Pirate King
III. The Ghost King

Overall not a bad cast. one minor correction though, Maya is the youngest Daughter. Vierna was kinda pissed when she had to take her ten years off to raise Drizzt, because she feared her younger sister would become a high priestess of Lolth before her.

Where is Gelroos Hun'et aka The Faceless One?

Also, who would you cast as Kelnozz, Drizzt's first "friend" at the academy who showed Drizzt the true nature of the drow race when he turned on him in the battle royale?
Keldorn
Keldorn - 9/29/2011, 10:20 AM
Not a bas cast, but actually I prefer Luke Goss as Jarlaxle, and maybe Keanu Reeves as Drizzt. But I have to say that Serkis as Belwar seems fantastic, and so do that Neeson, Ward and Dench. Congratulations for your choices, they're great!
