UPDATE: By the good graces of Galactus, we're making this a contest!

Hello, peeps!

I used to belong to an artist community at penciljack.com - a forum for aspiring comic book artists/writers to sharpen their skills and network where we used to get together and have "art jams" where we would collaborate or have competitions, or "draw offs". It was a lot of fun and helped me sharpen my skills a bit. I really enjoy coming to this site and thought we could try and bring something like that here.

So, consider this an open invitation for all the creative types here on CBM to come and challenge each other and yourselves and have some fun and win prizes! Everyone is welcome from writers, pencilers, inkers, letterers and colorists

The Contest:

To be clear, this is basically 2 contests in one with 2 chances to win (for the artists out there)!

The Draw Off/Art Jam Challenge! I'll explain a bit more what draw offs and art jams are for those who don't know. Rules will follow.

Art Jam Challenge:

Basically a collaboration between artists. One person takes point in creating a short sequential story - usually around 3 - 5 pages, and organizes the following:

A writer - To help create the story and write the dialogue.

Pencilers - Can be one or more pencilers - usually one person will take a script page each and draw it. An artist can also be selected to do a pin-up. Feel free to do a cover if you like.

Inkers - Basically, someone inking the pencils to ready the art for coloring. Usually, the pencilers will ink their own art unless someone wants to ink the whole book themselves.

Letterers - Someone to bring the captions and dialogue to life!

Colorist - To color the whole she-banga-bang. Use whatever method you like, but remember that you will be competing with others.

That's just an example. The idea is to have people collaborating on a project. If one person can do more than one aspect of creating the story, go for it! Work it out however you please.

Rules:

To enter, create a post under the Fan Art section of the Message Boards and you MUST TITLE IT "Art Jam Challenge 9/29 _______ (title of your character/characters)". Organize a creative team and do your thing.

Deadline to get your creative teams in gear is October 14, 2011 and you MUST email me by that date with a list of your creative team in place. Finished submissions need to be posted in the forum by November 14, 2011. It must be titled "FINISHED ART JAM 9/29, ____ (Title of your project)".

No more than 6 people to a project please. Limit one Art Jam entry per person. You cannot work on multiple Art Jams and still be eligible. You can however enter the Draw off challenge.

Your submission MUST meet the site guidelines for content.

Voting:

Winners will be determined by a poll created in an article and chosen on November 21, 2011.

Draw Off Challenge:

Time to pull out the ol' glove and challenge someone to a duel with a digital glove slap. Except in this case, no one gets shot with a pistol. You can call out a particular artist or any takers to a draw off. It can be any number of people taking place in the challenge.

Rules:

To enter, you make a post under the Fan Art section of the Message Boards and you MUST TITLE IT "Draw off Challenge 9/29_______ (title of your character/characters)" and once someone agrees to your challenge, you work out the details and rules (character, medium, etc.) and go at it.

One draw off entry per person. To keep it simple, no more than 5 people to a draw off. First come, first served, when it comes to responding to a challenge. If you miss an opportunity to do a draw off, create your own and ask for challengers!

As long as you battle at least one other person, your draw off entry is eligible. You are still eligible to compete in the Art Jam contest.

Deadline for all Draw -Offs for this contest is October 14, 2011.

Your submission MUST meet the site guidelines for content.

Voting:

Voting will be done in the comments section of the Draw Off in the forum. You vote by making a post with the name of the person you're voting for. Then you can leave whatever comment you like. Voting will end on October 21, 2011. Once the votes are tallied and the best art is chosen, we will then create a poll and choose the best of all the winners. A single winner will be chosen on October 31, 2011.

General Rules:

Again, please limit yourselves to ONE ART JAM and ONE DRAW OFF each. Meaning, you can't give yourselves multiple chances to win by drawing/writing/coloring in everyone's Art Jam. You can however, give yourself another chance to win by winning the Draw Off Challenge.

Feel free to use existing comic book/movie/pop art characters, or use your own creations if you like. This is not work for profit so keep that in mind.

If you can't meet your deadline, don't volunteer the work. Everyone knows that paying the bills and spending quality time with the significant other/family is most important, but in the case of Art Jams, you have people counting on you getting your work done on time.

If you agree to a Draw Off and you don't meet the deadline, you lose, barring any extenuating circumstances.

Please respect other artists. I know, it's the internet, but still...

Now, if this becomes a successful thing here, we'll need your help to add more rules and work out the kinks and stuff and maybe have more of these sort of contests somewhere down the line. I would like to keep this going for fun! Any input you have now would be helpful. So fire up your keyboards, sharpen your pencils and then hit up the Message Boards and then go to 'Fan Art' located under the 'Fan Created section' at http://www.comicbookmovie.com/forum/?fc=27, and let's get started!

Its not hard. Make a story with a beginning (Introduce hero), a middle (put the hero in some kind of danger) and an ending (hero overcomes danger and learns something. Write the dialogue and BAM! you have a story!

Can I do the whole thing by myself? It sounds complicated getting a team.

Prize?

Is it okay if I can do this on my own? Cuz I'm not sure how I'm going to get a team of artists, inkers, etc. But I'm pretty good at writing stories, but not so much on drawing. So is it alright if I just write the story by myself and also, what kind of story should I write about?

Thanks and good luck everyone! :)

I can do both the writing and art, but probably I'd just do the art for this one (not rejecting any offered writing work, though) - just if anyone wants me, lol. :P

Anyway you could say I'm serious on this so just in case, anyone can visit my DeviantART page to check out a few examples of my art, and if interested I'm available to be contacted anytime...if time could be managed well (which could be a bit tough for a school guy like me), I'm definitely in. :)

To the people that wanna go on their own, you might be better suited for the Draw off Contest. Art Jam is called a jam because basically it's a bunch of people pooling their talents together. Get at least one other person to tag along. I see posts here with writers looking for artists and artists looking for writers. I would suggest posting here and formally throw your hat in the ring by creating a NEW POST. I would suggest pitching an idea to get people excited about your project. The prize portion is going to be handled by Galactus, so expect some cool (as yet unrevealed) swag.

Let's do this people!
