What I Believe the Main Threat in THE AVENGERS Will Be

After much thought and discovery, I have come to the (somewhat far-fetched) conclusion of what will go down in THE AVENGERS.

So, just the other day I was rummaging through my comic-book collection. After much excavating I happened to discover my copy of The Infinity Gauntlet series, and, being the person I am, decided to thumb through it and relive all of the glory moments. Soon my moment of nostalgia came to a halt when a rather short scene in the series caught my eye. In issue 5, on page 9 and 10, I found this:

I didn't really notice what I noticed at first. My first thought was "Cool, it's Annihilus." But then the thought crossed my mind how Annihilus was a rumored villain in The Avengers, as well with Thanos. More thoughts crossed my mind until I noticed what I noticed, and what I noticed was this:

So that pic is pretty self-explanatory.

What I think is going down in The Avengers is this:

Loki gets sucked into a portal, but not one that leads into the Negative Zone. He instead runs across The Mad Titan, Thanos, whom he makes a deal with. The deal was this: and army in trade for the Cosmic Cube/Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos promises an army that will show no mercy to Earth and one that is easily expendable; this army is a band of pirates who live in the Negative Zone. He informs Loki that the Cosmic Cube does not only serve as a mode of transportation to other worlds, but to other dimensions as well, and he can utilize that power to bring the army to earth. Thanos tells Loki this without consent of the army or their leaders, but Loki doesn't know this.

So, Loki gets the cube blah blah blah blah blah and then opens a portal that leads to the Negative Zone. The army comes through, but not under orders of Loki or Thanos, but under Annihilus. He sees it as an opportunity to break through to the other side and conquer new worlds, but Loki is unaware of it. Soon Loki discovers that he is not in command and never was to begin with. Angry and upset, he turns to The Avengers and fights along-side them in order to stop Annihilus.

Yeah, I know this sounds like a stretch, but I can dream, can't I?

Another thing that crossed my mind was: even the rare case that something like this happened in the movie, how could have S.H.I.E.L.D have known about it long enough to assemble the Avengers? This is what I think:

A short time before the events of "Iron Man," S.H.I.E.L.D witnessed an event that was intended to have no witnesses. Through satellites, they were able to see something occur on Earth, and not in space. I think it would be awesome as boobs if this event was when Thanos comes to Earth in search of the cosmic cube and destroys a car which held a family to insure there were no witnesses to his arrival (Drax and Moondragon reference), and Nick Fury established The Avengers to ensure Earth's safety from a future invasion.

And there's my far-fetched ideas!

Post your response in the usual place.

That sounds pretty awesome. I'm game. But we'll see what happens. The only reason I'm thinking this might not pan out is that Whedon did already say that this would be a stand alone film with no references to future villains. Of course he could be intentionally leading us astray. But I tend to take the directors word as fact. But I love the idea of this movie being a lead in to the infinity gauntlet story line. It's a great theory.

Loki getting screwed over? No way.

Nice theory! Just out of curiosity, where did the Annihilus rumors first come from?

This is a very clever theory I wouldn't mind seeing happen. Good job, very well written. However, do I think this will happen? No. Not at all. Loki's army are a band of Thanos' minions, cosmetically similar in appearance to The Mad Titan himself.

Annihilus rumors started after they saw the portal.
I jumped the gun one time with the beginning url on the official Avengers wallpapers, which started with "i.annihil.us" but it's been around for years.

I think there's two or three new "theories" every week, each just as flimsy as the other. Of course, 3D swears it's Thanos' minions... not his goons, not his henchmen, not his gang, not his stormtroopers, nor his platoon of evil-doers.... but his MINIONS. He's gonna tell you if you prod him, that he heard from some source that MUST be legitimate that that is what it is going to be, and like any synonym for "minion", he won't accept anything else.

I was on the Annihilus truck some time ago, but I just figured there's only a month and a half left: why not just be surprised?

c the thing 4 me is how does Fury know bout the threat?? Loki is the main villain of The Avengers, n Thor didn't happen till after Iron Man 2. Yet he tried 2 recruit Tony in Iron Man.It wasn't till IM2 that he said he was only gonna be a consultant. My other 3 questions r where the [frick] is Jane n War Machine??? Also what was with TIH after credit scene?? Tony said I'm putting a team 2gether?? WTF does the General have 2 do with the Avengers??? I just hope they come full circle n answer all these questions in The Avengers. =)

The Annihilus rumors started with Rormachine being contacted by a reliable source saying that aliens from the Negative Zone were the villains in early drafts of the script.

@loudnoises

Agreed. Whedon did say it could stand alone movie. But he did state that they "allude to a greater threat".

half of me thinks that furys original intention was to put a team together in order to stop the hulk. look at when thors hammer landed, sheild wasnt surprised, they knew who thor was, but they couldent have anticipated him being banished to earth and becoming an avenger. my assumption was that stark was refferencing black widow, and probably hawkeye. i dont know if cap was thawed out by then (in the timeline he could have still been asleep in shield head quarters when the events of iron man 2 took place. either way its gonna be awesome.

MrReese My theory, I think the whole "First Avenger" has more of a meaning. I think SHIELD will excavate Cap out of the ice first, then they'll recruit Iron Man next seeing as how he is considered a consultant and he is assumingly in charge of creating Cap's shield. But before all of that, Loki will don a small attack upon Earth and so Fury visits the previously encountered superheroes and has them go kick Loki's ass, then on the way back to SHIELD headquarters Thor destroys the Quinjet, etc.
