Confirming a rumor that did the rounds online last year, Greta Gerwig is indeed set to take the helm of new adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia.

A profile in the New Yorker has revealed that the Barbie director will helm "at least two" Chronicles of Narnia movies (The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and Prince Caspian, presumably) for Netflix.

We first heard about the streamer's plan to re-adapt C.S. Lewis' fantasy tales back in 2018, and it looks like we may finally have some movement on the endeavour.

We've seen live-action takes on the beloved fantasy adventure stories before, both on British television and in Disney's three movies (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader). Those films proved to be highly divisive, with many Lewis fans feeling that they failed to do the books justice.

Last we heard, Netflix had enlisted Disney-Pixar writer Matthew Alrich as a “creative architect” to oversee all development on the Narnia movies and TV shows. We have no idea if he's still involved, however.

Gerwig is a highly in-demand actor/director, known for her work on the likes of Little Women, Lady Bird, Mistress America, and Frances Ha. She recently starred in Netflix's original movie White Noise, and, of course, also has the live-action Barbie film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling on the way.

How do you feel about this news? Do you think Gerwig is the right filmmaker to re-adapt these stories? Drop us a comment down below.

Apparently they asked Netflix for a quote and were told it's Narnia business

Lots of people complaining about her directing ‘IP’ on twitter, who’re the same people that can complain about women not getting a shot at the big stuff. Can’t have your cake and eat it too

Plus, if her adaptation of Little Women is anything to go by, she’s a great choice for Narnia. Very exciting news

Can’t wait to see the liberties that Netflix takes with this. What are the odds that they accurately adapt it?

The previous movies weren’t amazing by any means, but it could be worse.

Lion Witch and Wardrobe was a great adaptation. Then ... yeah... major liberties were taken. I can forgive aging up Prince Caspian somewhat (though it took a lot of the risk/danger away from the beginning of his story) and adding more "action" to that story (it's the thinnest story of the books, IMHO), but VOTDT is my favorite Narnia book and they butchered the thing with the whole mist deal ... other than Poulter playing Eustace, which was spot-on. Despite the obvious low budget, the BBC VOTDT is 100 times better than the Fox one.

I honestly wouldn't care if they set the Earth side of the story in more modern times or race-swapped some of those characters, so long as the ages were close, the characterizations spot on, and the Narnia pieces were well-adapted.

Also, a big fan of telling these stories in release order since Magician's Nephew is more impactful as a prequel than as an origin story, but since we only got the first three books in the last adaptation, I wouldn't mind them starting with MN in this case.

Also, one of the challenges of adapting these books into popular films is the temptation to keep dragging characters into the subsequent movies where they don't appear in the books. Jadis/White Witch was wedged into Fox's Dawn Treader this way. Heck, there are two books in the series without any Pevensie children and another where they only cameo as grown ups and presumably would need different actors. The reality is that the only full-series characters are Aslan and Narnia itself.

@ptick - I’m a big fan of the silver chair and the magicians nephew. I wonder if she will start with the magicians nephew first? 🤔

I wish she were adapting the other books we've yet to see in live action like The Magician's Nephew,The Silver Chair,The Last Battle, & The Horse and His Boy

@HAUSMAN01 - I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they started off with The Magician's Nephew, just because The Lion has been done so many times. The same director did yet another Little Women though and that was very popular so maybe she has a fresh take.

@HAUSMAN01 - This comment totally excavated my memory of the old BBC version of The Silver Chair

How many times does this have to be adapted? I get the feeling it just doesnt resonate with the general audience enough, but hopefully they can make the definitive live action version of this story.

@Shivermetimbers - Maybe, but the first film was a huge hit and did over double what Batman Begins did the same year.

@DalekCraigWasson - oh wow. I didn’t realize that. I’ve never seen them and have never really heard of anyone talking about the films and I am pretty old.

@Shivermetimbers - well outside of the Disney movie I think there’s just the BBC adaptation and a few animated movies. I don’t think it’s been adapted all that much but I need to double check my math.

One adaptation that I wouldn’t mind Netflix( or any streaming service)revisiting would be a book accurate Jason Bourne series.

@Arthorious - I never read the Bourne books but I enjoyed the movies mostly. I would be curious to see another adaptation, assuming there are significant differences.

@Shivermetimbers - both the movies and books are great ( well the first 3 books and movies) but they are quite different. In the books Jason has an arch rival/nemesis Carlos the Jackal.

Can't believe Disney let this go. It's prime material for an animated movie.

It will be cool to see some biblically-themed stories. As long as that remains central to the stories, I’m all for it.

I swear Netflix and other goofy ass companies waste time and resources on things I will never watch or dare to watch. Like create new stories instead readapting garbage ass stories. Film & TV has fallen off. There isn’t anything that good on streaming rally and everything else gets cut short after 1 season.

The proper approach is around 6 1-hour episodes to a book. Have it as seasons.

Also, Greta Gertwig is not a good choice.
