BARBIE Scores Biggest Opening Day Of 2023; Has Already Passed $150 Million Globally

Greta Gerwig's critically-acclaimed Barbie movie is off to a pretty staggering start at the box office, and has already passed the $150 million mark worldwide...

C'mon Barbie, let's go party.

Greta Gerwig's fantasy comedy/satire always looked set for a strong debut, and after taking in over $22 million on Thursday, the movie scored an estimated $48.2 million from 4,243 theaters on Friday for a $70.5 million total.

This gives Barbie, which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the biggest opening day of the year, and puts it on track to hit $155 million domestically this weekend. It's already passed $150 million worldwide!

If predictions hold, the movie will also score the highest three-day opening of 2023, and has a shot at landing the biggest opening weekend ever for a feature with a female director.

A pretty spectacular showing, especially in this era of supposed "blockbuster fatigue."

Highly positive reviews didn't hurt. The movie is currently sitting at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 90% audience score.

Of course, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer also releases this weekend, and while the bleak historical biopic is off to a strong start with $33 million on Friday for a projected $77 million weekend, it's not expected to cause Barbie too much trouble for the No. 1 spot.

Do you plan on seeing either Barbie or Oppenheimer this weekend? What about a "Barbenheimer" double-bill? Be sure to let us know in the comments.

From Oscar-nominated writer/director Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird) comes Barbie, which also stars America Ferrera (End of Watch, the How to Train Your Dragon films), Kate McKinnon (Bombshell, Yesterday), Issa Rae (The Photograph, Insecure), Rhea Perlman (I’ll See You in My Dreams, Matilda), and Will Ferrell (the Anchorman films, Talladega Nights), and more.

Gerwig directs from a screenplay she penned alongside Oscar nominee Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, The Squid and the Whale), based on the iconic fashion dolls by Mattel.

The film’s producers are Oscar nominee David Heyman (Marriage Story, Gravity), Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Robbie Brenner, with Gerwig, Baumbach, Ynon Kreiz, Richard Dickson, Michael Sharp, Josey McNamara, Courtenay Valenti, Toby Emmerich and Cate Adams serving as executive producers.

@MarkCassidy - that’s what I have been hearing too from family that’s seen it.

Doesn’t seem my cup of tea but I’ll check it out for Gosling at the least.

@TheVisionary25 - it's nothing at all like I was expecting. Very funny, suprisingly strange and even subversive.

@MarkCassidy - Wish I liked it more than I did - it's fun but the 2nd act didn't work that much for me and a lot of the emotional beats left me a little cold. The third act is fantastic though, and Gosling is just aces. My gf liked it a lot more than me, and I do think Gerwig's still an incredibly talented director, so I'm still happy to see it become a phenomenon

I saw Oppenheimer today and while my thoughts are not fully formed on it as of yet , I do think it’s Nolan’s best film for me in a bit

I do need to rewatch it again (and also want to which is a good sign)

The kinetic pacing off the movie , at the beginning especially threw me off so a rewatch might help since I know that is how it is now.

The performances are all great though , Cillian Murphy especially is getting an Oscar Nom no doubt as is RDJ!!.

@TheVisionary25 - It would be great if Nolan's next project was a new adaptation of H.G Wells' Time Machine.

He is the man for this job.

@TheVisionary25 -

It's not Nolan's best film like the hype said. It's a solid film though. It's an 8 out of 10 for me.💪🔥🤝

Damn. Really is a Barbie world, huh?

Good on them though. I get life-action Lego movie vibes off the film. Hoping to catch it and Oppenheimer next weekend.

The marketing for both movies together has been top notch so I’m not surprised it made its money. I’ll probably see Barbie in the theaters and Oppie at home. I tend to not enjoy biopics too much, but I know it’ll be well made at the very least

Poor Tom, all those death defying stunt marketing was beaten by a meme. And the scheduling did not help too.

@vectorsigma - to be fair, Barbie had been kind of a big deal for decades now, and this is her first proper live-action debut, played by one of the most popular Hollywood darlings of the last 10 years. The meme certeinly didn't hurt.

@dracula - Oppenheimer's about to open to twice what it was tracking at in part because of Barbie. It's gonna be Nolan's highest grossing non-Batman film, idk how that's anything but a huge W lol
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 7/22/2023, 8:24 PM
I was planning to see it today...everything was sold-out, I dont know what is it with this movie, but it might be a bigger phenomenon than Infinity War/Endgame, I havent seen this ammount of people interested in a movie since the first Avatar.

Anyway, the best part about this movie being the biggest hit of the year is...these idiots looking like clowns...AGAIN

Looks like a fun movie. Maybe Gunn can get Gerwig over on the DCU slate.
TheHumanSpider2

@TempleRod - Germing would do the kind of movie Birds of Prey was, and people didnt like it.
Not everyone has to make a freaking comic book movie.
dracula

@TempleRod - if she must, have her do a Harley Quinn movie and just a Harley Quinn movie

No bastardizing unrelated characters to put their name on the title only to deliver a harley quinn movie in everything but name

Go straight up jimmy palmiatti/amanda conner run
