Clash of the Titans Opening Weekend Domestic Gross Was $68 Million!

Which is only $2 million off the mark. Will there be a sequel?

Clash of the Titans grossed $68 Million in Domestic Theaters this past weekend to become the Number 1 Easter weekend release of all time! A movie is typically measured by the drop off in ticket sales by the second weekend of release. So we will have to wait a bit and see what it does this coming weekend. Which I think will be it's only chance to make more money due to Kick Ass coming out the weekend after.

Kick Ass jumps into Theaters April 16, 2010. Current predictions say Kick Ass will only make $32 million opening weekend, which is crazy when you compare that number to what the domestic total was for the opening weekend of Clash of the Titans, which was $68 million domestic.

Will there be a sequel? My guess is Yes. Clash of the Titans made enough opening weekend and will do well with Blu-ray sales to warrant a sequel. Which is good news for people who liked Clash and bad news for the people who didn't.

In our review I said Clash of the Titans was the best movie of 2010. John almost disagreed but said,"Well Ill give ya that, BUT. Let me clarify, when I made that statement I was comparing this movie to the others that we have reviewed. You can find those links to the left. I have not seen Book of Eli, or How to Train your Dragon. I want to but there are only so many hours in the day. A lot of people did not like Transformers ROTF. I put Clash and Transformers ROTF in the same category. Special Effects Extravaganza!

I'm going to see it on Wednesday...personally, I think it looks pretty damn good and for the most part the reviews I've seen have been fairly positive!

Well then that's $68 million more than what that movie deserves.

Hell, even the action and cgi didn't hold up in that crap fest

I believe it was Deadline who said the opening weekend forcast for Clash was in the 70 million range.

well, i see how a sequel would be "good news" to those who like it, but i don't see how it would be "bad news" for those who don't (unless they're forced to see the sequel at gunpoint lol)

still, looks like a great movie. the original was boss except for the robot owl (cute, yes, but you know it did NOT belong in that movie). can't wait to see it

i liked it. it wasn't the greatest thing ever, but i think people forget that the original was pretty corny, had bad characterizations, and was very slow to get started. the story was changed in a few places, but thats a good thing. i didn't want to watch the same exact movie. the changes were enough to make it different, but not too much so that it was something entirely different. the weakest part of it for me was the CGI. it wasn't as bad as GI Joe's CGI, not by a long shot. but it still could have been a little better.

one of the biggest complaints i see about this one, are that the companions that go with Perseus are just "haphazardly thrown into the mix at random moments." thats crazy. at least you know who the companions are in this one. in the old one, the only way you could tell them apart, was from the different animals on their shields. you didn't know their names or anything. they were just there to die.

yes, the original is a classic, but it really isn't much better than this one...

oh, but yeah, it doesn't need a sequel

Am I in the twilight zone or something? other than the special effects, what was good about that movie? It didn't make any sense what so ever. NONE! I understand people have different tastes, but ROTF was a sequal. it's unfair to compare the first movie in a series to a sequal. BTW, I'm actually looking forward to a sequal. I figure it can't possibly be as bad as the first.

@ maculis

what didn't make sense?? i would like to know what had you confused?? everything is explained pretty clearly.

SPOILER ALERT!

i was confused at first as to why Zeus wanted to punish the humans, but then gave Perseus a magic sword to help the humans rise up against the gods...but he explains EXACTLY why he did that at the end. other than that, there's nothing to be confused about, lol.

and Hades was punishing the humans for doubting the Gods and their power. so he was going to kill Andromeda, because the people compared her beauty to that of the goddess Aphrodite. (this happened in the original too, only it was Hera and not Hades that was bringing down the wrath) Comparing a mortal to a god, in any way, is a BIG no-no in greek mythology (in the eyes of the gods, this is taken to be a huge disrespect). it was a way of saying, "look, you doubt us?? look what we can do!" remember, the God's NEED the worship of the mortals. they couldn't just kill them all and be done with it. they had to make an example of Andromeda so that the mortals would fall back in line...

Local viewers and critics here have it rated like 1.5 out of 5 stars. The overall consensus on the forum here seems to be a thumbs down from most of the things I have read and I value the overall opinions of people here on movies like this. CDB, you're one of the first regulars that I have heard say that it is a decent show. Definitely going to be a rental at best for me.

CDB@ Go check out the COT review articles. Most are saying the story and plot line are terrible and fall apart. Many are also saying the acting is pretty poor in it. Add in things like the Medusa portion not being tense and scary and more fluffy, especially with a good looking Medusa opposed to being hideous looking. Haven't seen it myself and I don't listen to critics, but I do listen to overall viewers and when I saw it rated lower than 2 out of 5 stars after opening weekend here, that means "rental"...if that, for me.

BmanHall@ Cats ARE cooler than dogs. :-P Sorry...couldn't resist.

I don't know what movie people saw but it was a very enjoyable movie. ANd everybody that I know saw it said it was a very good movie and reviews that I saw about the movie were positive. People see the movie if you want who cares if other people hated it or loved it. See it for yourself.

I saw the movie this weekend and I thought it was crap. The special FX were cool but with lack of story and stupid one liners killed it. I really don't think they took this movie seriously. It had so much potential and just didn't make the grade. Persius (Sam Worthington) seemed really whinney and childish to me. And why did this seem like a warped alternate version of STARWARS!!
His sword might as well have been a lightsaber and hey look, its Qwi-gon jin. And where is his helmet of invisibility. And instead of marrying the princess in the end, persius rides off on pegasis. And why is pegasis black! First Nick Fury and now Pegasis!!! Not to sound racist and I do apolagise ahead of time as to not affend any sensitive people out there in internetland.(Sam Jackson ROCKS as Nick Fury). This was just an unnessisary change unless my mythology is wrong and isn't pegasis supposed to be the LAST of the flying horses. He uses the helmet to get pegasis hellooooo. And the pep talk persius gives everyone before they go after medusa was Frakking stupid and pointless, and at the end of that speach hes all "Lets go get that bitch"......WTF!!!! They didn't use language like that back then. I don't think "Bitch" was even in the dialect in ancient greek mythology. It was again more childish acting and contrived story telling. I was hoping for a masterpiece in cinematic story telling that would stand the test of time. But instead I bore witness to a pointless action flick not worthy of the name CLASH of the TITANS. I could go on but I assume you folks are getting tired of reading such negative feedback about a movie that should have been glorious. I'm really disappointed in the director. He could have done better and so could the writers. Hollywood is circling the drain at this point. But again these are just my opinions and I hope I didn't ruin anything for anyone but I expect better. When it comes to CLASH of the TITANS, I expect the BEST and it should have been a foot note in EPIC FILM HISTORY. Not just another popcorn flick.

Ever Frustrated, R.R.

P.S. Why?

SPOILER ALERT!!!

@CorndogBurglar...Ok, 1. why was he brought to the main hall in Argos, where there only appeared to be upperclass and soldiers? In fact, why was he prisoner at all? 2. How did anyone know that he's a demi-god? 3. How did he go from being just a fisherman to the best swordsman in the all the land in one 30 second training session? Because he's a demi-god? does that mean he never has to train? 3. he refused to take the sword, because he wanted to win "as a man", yet he has super powers? 4. Why was Medusa's temple in hell? and why did they make it seem like hell was this nearly impossible place to get to, yet there was a shyt load of statues all over the place that were apparantly one time human? So, I guess it's not that hard to get to. 5. what was up with the djinn being wooden and what made him explode, but most of all, why did he do it? I thought the whole reason he was fighting was to become human again. 6. why was he so gung ho to kill the kraken anyway? to get revenge on hades? really? he wanted to kill the ruler of where did people go because said ruler killed his family? who, oh by the way didn't know perseus was a demi-god at the time. but here's the kicker...how did he defeat hades? with the lightening bolt from zeus? why didn't zeus do it himself? oh and why was hades supposed to get weak because he released the kraken? the lock on the door was really really heavy? and if zeus hadn't sent that lightening bolt, what the hell was perseus going to do to hades anyway? sorry I lost count somewhere in there. I've got a bunch more than that, but I didn't want to go on forever.

This wasn't the worst movie I have ever seen, but I don't think it deserves a sequel. Just because a film makes a ton of money, doesn't mean it deserves a sequel, Expecially when the film it's based off was a one-film job. With CBM's at least, there are many, many different sources and stories to pull from. I'm not a Mythology expert, but are there multiple stories involving Perseus? If so, then I guess sequels may work out. I just wish someone would teach Worthington how to act.

Does not deserve a sequel.

@ maculis

1. are you really complaining about something like that?

2. The half-god chick told everyone Perseus was a demi-god as well as Hades.

3. its Greek Mythology, you really need to have an imagination. yes, he was a good fighter because he was a demi-god. thats like asking how hercules (also a son of Zeus) can be so strong without lifting weights, lol.

3. (you had two number 3's, lol) he didn't have any "super powers". he might be an excellent fighter, but he's still a mortal. he can't change how he was born, but he CAN choose how to live. (which was the over all message of the movie. mortals living their own lives without fearing the gods)

4. Did you never see the original Clash of the Titans?? in the original, they had to fight Cerberus before they entered Madussa's cave. and guess what Cerberus guards in greek mythology...that's right, the gate to the underworld.

5. i'll give you the Djinn argument. i thought he was a waste. kinda cool, but they didn't do a good job explaining him. he's obviously a heavy magic user though, so that would explain the suicide explosion.

6. he was gung ho about killing the Kraken because he was trying to get the mortals to rise up against the gods. the whole point of the story, is that the Kraken is going to kill this person that the mortals compared to a god, again, a BIG no no in greek mythology. the gods wanted to kill Andromeda to make an example of her, to show their power and make the mortals fall back in line. Perseus wanted to stop this from happening to show the mortals that they didn't have to live on their knees in fear of the gods. that it was possible to challenge them.

also, Perseus knew he was going to die. the witches told him that. but he didn't care, he was willing to die in his fight with Hades. his mission was to kill the Kraken, and he did that. he just got lucky that Zeus decided to help him. and when Zeus struck Perseus's sword with lightning, i thought that WAS Zeus killing Hades. did you see something i didn't?

so, i just think there's a lot of nit-picking going on with this movie, because a lot IS explained, and the story isn't any worse than the original...just different. by no means is it a perfect movie, but it was certainly enjoyable if you allow it to be.
