Johnny Depp Sets Sail on Fourth 'Pirates' Movie, but not co-stars...

Ted Elliott, the co-writer of the first three "Pirates" movies told Empire magazine, "We wanted to do a story about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth, and Tim Powers wrote a book about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth... it just turns out that to do that story you would need that book."

Johnny Depp signed on to appear in the fourth movie in 2008, before there was a script. It was announced at the same time he would also be playing Tonto in a film version of "The Lone Ranger," but that project has been delayed until after "Pirates" is finished.

Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom have both said they had no desire to return for a fourth movie. Knightley said in an interview, "It was a completely fantastic experience, and it was an amazingly large portion of my life, but I don't think I need to go there again. I think that it's done." Also, the director of the original trilogy, Gore Verbinski, will not be coming back. He is being replaced by Rob Marshall, the director of "Chicago" and "Nine."

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" is scheduled to dock into movie theaters on May 20th, 2011.

PIRATES 4 should be good!

We've known that Knightley and Bloom are out for a while.

As long as they follow these guidelines, POTC 4 may be the best one since Black Pearl:

1) Do whatever you can to keep Depp on board. I don't care if they have to give him France to keep him, this franchise relies on Depp. Without him, we're either going to not see Jack at all, which is beyond stupid, or we're going to get a replacement, which would suck beyond measures because no one can play Jack just like Depp, no way.

2) Bring Geoffrey Rush and the other pirates back. It seems like this is going to happen, so I'm happy. I love seeing Jack's fellow swashbucklers interacting with each other. They made even Pirates 3 watchable with their great chemistry. And you need to bring Rush back. He was pure awesomeness as Barbossa.

And 3) Try to bring it back to the style and tone of Black Pearl. The last 2 Pirates movies have gotten unnecessarily convoluted and "out-there" shall we say. POTC 4 needs to go back to the simple pirate adventure story, filled with action and humor, but with a slight supernatural twist to it to set it apart from the rest of the genre. DMC and ATW just got ridiculously weird and complex, especially ATW, it lost some of what made the first so great.

If they do all that, I'll be happy, provided a good script and competent director of course.

give him France. LOL!

They should've left after the first one. What a stupid storyline they had.

@Tyler- Well said! Rush is an amazing actor and he did an amazing job as Barbossa

i agree with tyler, simplify the story and it will be much better.

Tyler, I 100% agree with you on points 1 and 2. I am one of the few who enjoyed how each movie became gradually more convoluted. I would envision that to be the life of an adventuring pirate, and I think the nature of the plot reflected that, and I think it was intentional. I must confess however, to a child like wonder to those movies myself lol.

Without Depp this franchise is hopeless, and without Rush it would be certainly less entertaining.

Myth: I certainly see your point, but to me they simply included too many plots/sub-plots, especially in At World's End, that over-crowded the movie and made it seem like there was no central focus. A bit like Spider-Man 3.

In At World's End you had:

The romantic tension between Will and Elizabeth
Love story between Calypso and Davy Jones and why they split up
Tia Dalma being a Goddess in disguise
History of the Pirate League (can't remember the exact name of it)
The Nine Pieces of Eight (which I didn't understand at all)
The whole thing with how you get into/out of Davy Jones' Locker
Elizabeth's dad getting into trouble
Barbossa coming back
The guy who wanted to marry Elizabeth returning and betraying the Pirates
Sao Feng's whole deal with the maps and making a deal with Will but betraying him/them later
Will being a douche and turning over to Beckett's side
Lord Beckett wanting to control the world
Davy Jones' heart being the only way to kill him
Will's dad becoming crazy all of a sudden and kind of an asshole even though he wasn't one at all in Dead Man's Chest

These are all off the top of my head, so there might be a couple I'm forgetting.

The first Pirates was the best, 2 was really good, but I got bored during 3, I agree w/ Tyler that it should be a simple adventure with swashbuckling and humor plus Depp/Rush are a must

3 was all over the shop but I still kind of enjoyed it. In all 3 the lowest common denominator was Orlando "I'm as wooden as a the plank I'm walking" Bloom. I'm so glad that Hollywood seems to have realized that the man is pants and doesn't cast him in anything anymore:)

Ror: I did enjoy 3, but it was just disappointing when considered with the overall greatness of the first as a film.

And I hate Bloom as well ;)

This is old news. It was reported way back when. They didn't want to return. And no one involved had a part for them in it.

as long as they get a really good actor in a black beard. I can see it being Tim Curry. I'm not sure if that is good or not.

orlando bloom will never play a role that fits him better than legolas did... a stoic elf, with no emotion, mostly good for looking pretty.

it was only gonna be sparrow and barbosa
to continue in the series
the swan and turner saga
was only for the trilogy
that's why their story ended
to bring them back would be odd as hell
barbosa wast the best pirate ever
so if rush doesn't return i'm done with the franchise
i wanna know who's playing blackbeard!!!
i vote adam baldwin

ya to be honest the original movies would have done better without those two. knightly is hot but never shows sex appeal. and elf man just isnt cool. i think depp can make this movie solo with all the other supporting actors and introducing some new ones. This sounds like they are getting closer to a real pirate movie rather than putting in a love story as they always do.

knightley and bloom were the worst parts of these movies...well...aside from the 2nd and 3rd movies being complete garbage. but as far as the actors go, they were the worst.

Wasnt this reported months ago! Im glad they arent coming back, their characters were great in the first one but they seemed to get crap in the sequels and their story was done at the end of the third one anyway. InTylerWeTrust82's points is all the new movie needs to be good

OK I liked all of the POTC movies, but the ninja review was priceless. That was some funny stuff.

I THOUGHT THAT SPARROW WOULD JOURNEY WITH KNIGHTLY TO FIND THE FOUNTAIN, THAT WAY SHE COULD SPEN ETERNITY WITH BLOOMS CHARACTER WHO IS TRAPPED DOING THE DUTCHMAN THING FOREVER..OH WELL..BUT IF THEY DID HAVE TO BE IN IT, MAYBE A CAMEO? OR IF THE CHARACTERS WERE IN IT I COULD SEE A KNIGHTLY REPLACEMENT THAT COULD WORK..

MiniNinja
MiniNinja - 1/23/2010, 6:05 PM
The ninja review hit it right on the button. I agree also with InTylerWeTrust82. The only person i can even consider seeing to take Depps' place would be Robert Downey Jr. But as Tyler said before it wouldn't be the same to replace Depp. Hell, RDJ could probably play an awesome pirate.
hescian
hescian - 1/24/2010, 12:18 AM
The first one was great, and although parts 2 & 3 were not as good, I still enjoyed them.
But as comments above mentioned, the Bloom/Knightley story is over, so it's not loss. To include them in a fourth movie would be difficult to do story-wise.
It would be a shame NOT to have Rush, though. His Barbossa from the first movie is one of the best screen villains, and certainly the BEST pirate I've seen.
But it's worrying that Verbinski isn't directing. Without him, it could turn into a new Cutthroat Island...

Keep it simple with the swashbuckling. Removing the love story stuff could knock this one out of the park !
