It's been a while since we had any updates on eOne's plans for a live-action Dungeons and Dragons series, but Deadline is now reporting that the project, which enlisted Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber to write, executive produce and helm the pilot early last year, has been given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order for the Paramount+ streaming service.

The show has Derek Kolstad (John Wick; The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) on board as a writer, and while specific story details are still under wraps, the plot will be based on Hasbro’s best-selling fantasy role-playing game, which has seen a resurgence in popularity over the past few years.

Expect elves, orcs, wizards, and the usual elements associated with the genre.

Paramount Pictures also has Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves coming to the big screen, but we're not sure whether both projects will be directly connected. All we've been told is that they are being "developed in conjunction" with one another.

“We don’t want it to just be one show so we are building out, developing out a multi-pronged approach for television, a number of scripted shows and unscripted, and we hope to be taking this out to the marketplace early next year,” said eOne’s President of Global Television Michael Lombardo back when the series was first announced.

Thurber is also working on two sequels to Netflix's Red Notice, which is still the streamer's most-watched original movie of all time.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves arrives in theaters March 3, 2023.

I was excited for more DnD until I read ''from Red Notice director''. Think he's kind of a boring director. Unless he casts Joe Manganiello, then he has won me over.

The marketing on this flick...

😜

Then, I looked up the budget for this sword and sorcery epic: $45 million dollars.

Ouch.

A series?

Well I suppose they know the movie is going to flop, more of a likely hood of the property getting an audience on the small screen.

As an avid player of 3.5e and 5e, I was excited to see the upcoming film, but for those who have been keeping up with the Open Gaming Liscense (OGL) news, the allure is all but vanished. Long story short, Hasbro is looking to alter its agreement to allow 3rd parties to create supplemental content for the game, which could include heavily monitored oversight, require the gross profits to be shared at an unprecedented scale, and most egregiously, counteract the perpetual and irrevocable agreement that content creators are already using.

This upcoming series likewise has me numb. A show was something I'd always wanted, but now I feel deflated and exhausted. Knowing that Hasbro is willing to turn its back on its community of 3rd Party Content Creators, despite it being such a backbone to the game, is saddening, if not all that surprising.

@TheRose - wait, what actually is going. I'm not keeping up at all.

Might be because I'm not into third party stuff at all. I just work with whatever I have access to in DnD beyond.

Okay, I did some reading (https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/dd-content-creators-outraged-over-licensing-changes-demand-the-game-remain-open-3377155) and it doesn't sound that bad if it's indeed to limit bigoted content.

The tiered system does sound pretty bad though.

@TheRose - I haven’t played since Judges Guild was licensed to create TSR approved add ons.

@bkmeijer1 - I would suggest reading Linda Codega's analysis of the leaked OGL 1.1. It's an in-depth look at what Wizards of the Coast has been considering and it could change things DRASTICALLY. Ex. taking 25% of the gross of publishers and being able to change terms on a whim with only 30 days notice.

@TheRose - ''It addresses new technologies like blockchain and NFTs''

I only just start readin, and I already don't like where this is going.

"is developing a live-action Dungeons and Dragons live-action series", wonder if it is going to be live-action? For the love of god, take a few minutes to proof read before posting.

The film looks awful. Why do they keep trying to force comedy into these projects? Makes it feel like a big-budget Xena or Hercules. Hopefully the show doesn't strike the same tone.

@Deckacards - To be fair to this franchise, I believe comedy isn't such a bad path to take. Most of the games that I play, even those with super-serious lore and tone, have the potential to go off the rails because of a joke. It's a common nature of tabletop games that are played between friends. You rib the NPCS, your rib the DM, you rib each other. It's a game of make-believe and often, ideas are so ridiculous that it become comedic.

That said, I'd be interested to see the series take a darker tone (thought attached Red Notice to it doesn't exactly give high hopes for that). DnD has some horrific and creepy corners that would be amazing to see on screen without the mandated puns and goofs.
