Though early predictions weren't quite so positive, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has managed to exceed opening weekend expectations at the domestic and international box office.
Paramount Pictures and eOne's fantasy adventure adaptation took in $38.5 million from 3,855 North American theaters, and ticket sales are expected to remain strong thanks to positive word-of-mouth and great reviews (it currently sits at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes).
After taking in $33+ million overseas, its global total is an estimated $72 million.
The movie has also earned a solid A- CinemaScore from audiences.
A strong start, but with a not modest $150 million budget, Honor Among Thieves is going to need sturdy legs if it hopes to launch a franchise.
In other box office news, John Wick: Chapter 4 continues to slay, and has now passed $245 million worldwide. Shazam! Fury of the Gods, however, has only just limped past $119 million globally.

"A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people," reads the official synopsis. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure."
Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley helmed the project, and wrote the latest version of the script based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio. Derek Kolstad (John Wick; The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) has also been hired to write and develop a separate live-action Dungeons & Dragons television show, which was recently given a straight-to-series order for Paramount+.
