DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES Sequel Might Still Happen... Under One Condition

Despite highly positive reviews, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was a box office disappointment, but that doesn't mean the possibility of a sequel is completely off the table...

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves wasn't close to the hit the studio was hoping for, but the door may still be open for a sequel... under one condition.

Paramount Pictures and eOne's recent fantasy adaptation received highly positive reviews from critics (it's sitting at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an equally impressive 93% audience score), but despite a fairly strong opening weekend and an A- CinemaScore, the movie simply failed to find its feet at the box office.

Honor Among Thieves finished its theatrical run back in May, with a disappointing final tally of $93M domestic/$207M worldwide on a $150M budget. Factoring in advertising costs, etc, and the chances of a sequel being greenlit seemed somewhere between slim and none.

However, there may be hope for a follow-up yet.

In Variety's in-depth profile of Paramount Pictures boss Brian Robbins, the exec acknowledges that the movie underperformed and will "lose money," but he hasn't ruled out the possibility of a sequel - as long as they can "figure out a way to make it for less."

We do know that a small-screen spin-off is still being developed for the Paramount+ streaming service, so the studio clearly hasn't completely lost faith in the (potential) franchise - though bringing in another FX-heavy big-screen adventure on a budget may prove to be a challenge.

"A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people," reads the official synopsis. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure."

Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley helmed the project, and wrote the latest version of the script based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio.

@ObserverIO - Shouldn't this film be called a massive bomb though?

@rkshuttleworth - It is a massive bomb. I wouldn't advise they make a sequel. But I WANT a sequel because I loved it. If this is the only way it comes... I'll take it.

@TheNewYorker -

@Matador - Nah everyone who saw it liked it, just not enough people saw it. It has a 90% on RT and is 1 of the highest rated film this year.

@ObserverIO - I loved it too, though admittedly I only caught it when it came to Netflix. It deserves more love than it got.

I enjoyed the movie. As someone who has played D&D for way too many years, it had enough little nods to the dedicated player while, I thought, still being very open to non-players.

@WEAPONXOXOXO - dude,I wasn't expecting to like it and I did. It was actually a fun flick.
I went in there ready to be annoyed by Chris Pine and Hugh Grant, expecting over the top silliness. But the movie just works

This was a really entertaining movie. Shame it didn't do better in theatres.

I'm still holding out hope for a Drizzt Do'Urden series. Done with a serious tone.

@CorndogBurglar - there's so much directions they can take this with the amount of adventures and books that I'm surprised they went with an original story. Hope the sequel or spin-off has stuff like Drizzt
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/27/2023, 10:36 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Right? And the books are all pretty serious in tone. Could you imagine a live action Drizzt trilogy in the style of Lord of the Rings?

It could be soooooooo good.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/27/2023, 11:24 AM
@CorndogBurglar - that would be pretty sweet, but I'm not sure I wanna see a whole trilogy about it. There's so much to tell, that I think putting the resources of a trilogy into one character does a disservice to the rest
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/27/2023, 11:54 AM
@bkmeijer1 - They could start out with Forgotten Realms. And do Dragon Lance as a separate series.

But I do agree, an anthology series would be great.

soupysales - 7/27/2023, 4:34 PM
@CorndogBurglar - yes!...i haven't read drizzt in quite a few years, but i do remember the trilogy, and then i think i read some of the other books that came out with him as the lead character...it would need to have a serious tone, at least to carry the feeling of the books...but with how much it would cost to get the special effects right, i'm sure the studio would want more comedy in it to appeal to more people...that's the downside, for me...drizzt needs to be dark and somber...and sad in parts...not a lot of sparkles and laughter...but to put that kind of money into a project that may or may not appeal to enough people to make it profitable...i want it true to the originals...but if they did...i would be right there, and ready to buy the blu ray set when it came out...dang...i may have to pick up his books again...thanks man!
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/27/2023, 5:09 PM
@soupysales - Yeah dude, I love Drizzt. I read all of the trilogies and quadrilogies all the way up through the Hunter's Blades Trilogy, which was awesome. But there have been a LOT more since then. They are still writing new series' of Drizzt, which is just crazy to me.

But he's such a good character, and his crew are so much fun. Brunner, Katty Brie, and Wulfgar are all awesome. Although at some point there is a time skip and I believe they are all dead now.

But you're right. Drizzt should be fun, but also sad and brooding. Being a Dark Elf on the surface world automatically makes everyone hate you and think you're evil. He's a guy that has no real home because he doesn't fit in with the Underdark, but no one trusts Drow on the surface.

And he's seen a lot of shit and had friends die. They could really make a good movie of him.

bkmeijer1 - 7/27/2023, 5:44 PM
@CorndogBurglar - exactly. Just an anthology series would be great. Or maybe multiple, with each having a different campaign setting as its main focus

It was decent. The trailers made it look generic as hell and I think that hurt its overall take.

OFF TOPIC

Anyone interested there is a Great documentary on Peacock about Oppenheimer. Called "To End All War Oppenheimer The Atomic Bomb" Lots of live interviews of Oppenheimer himself and all main characters not actors. Even Albert Einstein is in it not a actor.

The documentary covers the first Bomb explosion and the two Bombs that were dropped on Japan. Warning there are live shots of the victims of the Bomb drops. It also covers what the U.S. Government did to him, wife and brother.

Once again, it's all the actual people talking not actors.

Only 1 hour and 27 minutes long.

@PlusUltra - Those two director for me are both right there.

I go back and forth between them. Filmmaking is visual storytelling. On the visual side I give the edge to Denis because he uses every tool in the tool box well. Nolan is one of the best also but he shuns CGI whereas Denis can make it seamlessly work with practical effects. I have never seen any film from him where I looked at the CGI and thought it looked fake.

Then there is the story side where Nolan has the edge. Denis can story tell with the best but Nolan has an uncanny ability to weave themes in his stories that all come together at the end like no one I have ever seen before. He takes simple imagery or lines and by the end of the film it has greater meaning that always resonates.

While neither has the body of work yet to be considered the best ever. I see a future where that might be the case.
