Mentioning Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factor, Alice in Wonderland, and Twilight are reasons why NOT to make the movie. Burton sucked out all the original charm and filled it with Johnny Depp.

But parts of the interview actually sounds promising like the LOTR style expansive fantasy. I'll be more convinced when they get a good director. How about Spike Jones?

WHEN did I say "NEW" trend? Do NOT put words into my "mouth" before you start typing "drivel".

By your own words, Hollywood has been dry for material for over a 100 years.

I would say my biggest complaint is the recent "rebooting/remaking" has been executed poorly for a majority of the films. We may as well have watch Uwe Boll movies and called it gold.

Sure the 1939 Wizard of Oz was a remake, but that's not the issue. The issue is that that particular Wizard of Oz was fantastic, and became a classic. All remakes/sequels/reboots that have been made since, are terrible. This one will be no different.

This new film is to be based directly on the original novel with no singing and dancing. It is not a remake of the 1939 classic, which deviated greatly from the Baum novel. The 1939 version is more of a re-imagining than an adaptation. Don't expect a film reminiscent of the Judy Garland work. To call this new film a remake of that is amazingly short-sighted.

That being said, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" went back to the original source material, as well; ignoring 1971's "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", and I have to say I still prefer the one that deviated greatly from the novel. Johnny Depp was just creepy. Sometimes the changes just work better than a literal translation when it's moved to the silver screen. I guess we'll see...

I have 2 kids both girls who love the original movie. But my oldest is kinda out growing it, so maybe she will get into the new one. So im looking forward to it, and hope she likes it as much as the first film

@Jojo- It doesn't matter, none of those other Wizard of Oz films made nearly as much of an impact as the Judy Garland one, which is why it shouldn't get rebooted, it's a classic. Those other films aren't....they should leave it alone. I mean Fistful of Dollars is heavily based off of a Japanese Samurai film it doesn't mean they have the right to remake it though do they?

As long as Jack Nicholson is the Wizard, Jim Carrey is the Scarecrow and Will Ferrell is the Tin Man.

I can just hear Jack Nicholson telling Dorothy and friends to get out and come back tomorrow. He would be perfect for the role, or actually the dual role of Professor Marvel as well.

Little Wizard Stories of Oz (1913, collection of 6 short stories)
Tik-Tok of Oz (1914)
The Scarecrow of Oz (1915)
Rinkitink in Oz (1916)
The Lost Princess of Oz (1917)
The Tin Woodman of Oz (1918)
The Magic of Oz (1919, posthumously published)
Glinda of Oz (1920, posthumously published)

Only a few of the ones you listed could technically be called a "remake" or "reboot". I have no issue with reboots if they are rebooting a crappy movie. I do have an issued when a phenomenal classic movie is rebooted. If it ain't broke it don't need fixin'. Certain movies should be left alone. The Wizard of Oz is one. Princess Bride is another.

Not lame as a kid u watched probably as a teen and u still watch now. The Wizard of Oz is timeless we know but I think it would gather more fans with 21st century technology but still have a 1939 feel. Keep making magic.

I'm for it. Will it be good? I can't say. I have said that a film series depicting the actual books would be good. If done proper and with respect, it could be the American LOTR. Its been quite sad to see Disney struggling to find its LOTR with Narnia, strike gold with Pirates then fail with other classics. I still am very sceptical about sequels to classics. Scarlet was really a poor follow up to Gone With the Wind as it was cast and directed. Dalton is no Gable and I never saw the fire of Scarlet in Joanna as I did in Viv. Some site the source as bad but a good actor can make crap shine. That said, there is no modern way(yet) to make a true sequal to a classic. In that respect, Return to Oz could have been so much more but suffered because it was an unjustifable sequal to the classic.
I'm with Jojo in this, however. It will never be made if no one trys. Any written work is difficult to translate to film (such is our love of CBM) but that is the challenge of scripting and directing.
