David Yates To Helm HARRY POTTER Spin-Off FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

He directed the final four Harry Potter movies for WB, & perhaps that explains why they've now turned to David Yates to return to the world of magic and muggles for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Though Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban's Alfonso Cuaron was at one point named as being in contention for upcoming spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, it's another familiar face from the franchise that Warner Bros. have turned to to helm the movie. David Yates helmed the final four instalments of that series, including the two-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. A deal hasn't been signed just yet, but Variety's sources state that he has agreed to direct the ambitious project once he finishes work on Tarzan. The movie is set roughly 70 years before Harry Potter was born and focuses on Newt Scamander, the author of the Hogwarts text book of the same name. It will also be set in New York, a major departure from the previous UK settings. "Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world," writer J.K. Rowling explained not too long ago about the planned trilogy. An actor hasn't been found as of yet, but they're said to be looking for someone in their early 20s. How do you guys feel about Yates' return?

@Sipprelle: Yeah, it no longer being here could have something to do with the fact that the headline was something along the lines of, "fantastic beasts to be directed by david yates" and the main body of the article appearing to have been written by a 10 year old.

When it's a gif, yes I have. I just turn my computer on and off again, that tends to work for me.

As long as this movie actually gives some time to the beasts as opposed to focusing entirely on wizards, I'll enjoy it more.

@JoshWilding Fair enough. Good news though, Yates is the man.

Cool! I grew up with the Harry Potter books/movies, I can not wait for this movie, I'm a little less nervous now that they got some one like Yates to helm it.

Aww, come on!

His Potter movies were... kinda joyless and personality-impaired for the most part. Super serious and grim and colorless. I would imagine this is gonna have to be a 180 from that? I was hoping for a "quirkier" director, someone like Cuarón or what have you. Anyway, good luck, looking fwd to it.

I will see this. I kinda wish they would have done a movie about the founders or a Dumbledore or even a Voldemort rise to power type of movie.

@NoPhucksGiven
Half Blood Prince was considered voldemorts origin(although a lot was cut out of the movie version)
The deathly Hallows also touched upon it, again cut out of the movie.

BUT HELLZ YEAH DAVID YATES!

@diamondz
In that recent schedule WB/DC movies to 2020, there were 2 listed as 'WB event movie'. I'm thinking those were referring to these movies right here.

I honestly never cared for Yates directing in Harry Potter. I mean the scripts certainly left areas to be desired (such as never explaining the mirror or the Marauders) but yeah, he did some stuff really good, but other areas, I don't think really suited him.

I didn't like his HP films. They were boring and lifeless, much worse than the books.

Not really a fan of David Yates. I liked Part 8 and Part 6 but Parts 5 and 7 are the absolute worst Harry Potter films. I'll still see it but eh...

Of course they went with the guy that generated the most financially successful films in the series. He is also such an incredible director.

Orehrepus - 8/21/2014, 8:14 PM
I haven't.
But since the movie is out soon, why bother reading it?
You know, I've been wondering why all of a sudden JK started writing adult stuff after all those family oriented Harry Potter books. Guess I'll find out when I see this movie.

Bummer !

I liked every Potter movies, but Yates' were my least favourite. Particularly because of what he did to HBP. Turning that brilliant book into a teenage love story "Oh, yeah, there's Voldemort too, somewhere..."

But i'll wait and see.

God no. Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows part 2 sucked. Especially Half-Blood Prince, damn that was raped. Order of the Phoenix was nice though as was DHpart1.
