HARRY POTTER: Warner Bros. Rumored To Be Plotting A Big Screen Reboot Of The Original Franchise

After the Fantastic Beasts franchise flopped, Warner Bros. has gone back to the drawing board with the Wizarding World, and a new rumour suggests that could include a reboot of the original movies...

With the Fantastic Beasts franchise proving to be both a commercial and critical disappointment, it's become clear that expanding the Wizarding World is easier said than done.

Recently, we've heard that the original Harry Potter cast is seemingly unwilling to return for an adaptation of The Cursed Child, meaning the franchise's future is very much in doubt. Warner Bros. executives have claimed something is in the works, but could that be a full-blown reboot of the seven movies based on J.K. Rowling's beloved novels?

According to a new rumour, shared by our friends at Screen Geek (via SFFGazette.com), there are indeed plans for the Harry Potter franchise to be rebooted for the big screen.

It sounds like the idea being discussed would involve recasting the core characters and putting a fresh spin on the story that begins with The Philosopher's (or Sorcerer's) Stone and ends with The Deathly Hallows. Whatever this project may or may not be, it's reportedly in the very early stages of development, so who knows what it will end up looking like.

It's been over a decade since the final Harry Potter movie was released, so now wouldn't be the worst time to start over and tell those stories to a new generation of fans. However, when the movies remain so beloved - and such faithful adaptations of the books - what more is there to do?

This reboot sounds like it's a good 3-5 years away from happening, anyway, and it's even insinuated that the books might be adapted in a new way (they could be animated or told from the point of view of another character, for example).

While the DC brand is set to receive an overhaul courtesy of the James Gunn and Peter Safran-led DC Studios, it's hardly a surprise that Warner Bros. is looking for a way to make its biggest franchise profitable again by revisiting Harry Potter. Those movies made a huge amount of money for them, and we're sure they'd do so again if handled well.

We'll see what happens with this one, but it's probably best to take these claims with a pinch of salt for now. A TV series adaptation of the Harry Potter books would be a great way to revive the franchise, but with Warner Bros. prioritising theatrical releases over streaming, we're not going to hold out much hope on that front.

Do you think a reboot is the right way to go with this magical movie franchise?

The first one will come out. Fans will bitch about it. It wont make the money WB wanted. They announce a legacy sequel with the original cast instead.

@micvalpro - it's the way things go these days it appears.
I would argue that legacy sequels are the only way to go (or spin-off movies) but reboots just irk people the wrong way.

@micvalpro - I'm surprise they didn't already remake Harry Potter as Batman and Spider-man have all been rebooted so quickly. The 1st film came out 12 years ago its about time to reboot as this IP is still so popular. Lord of the Rings is probably going to be rebooted next.

Not like Daniel Radcliff is going to return. WB already offered him a shit load of money and he still refused it during the reunion hbo special. If you don't have Harry Potter you don't have a franchise just look at the Fantastic Beast franchise struggling.

@AmazingFILMporg - Yea but the question is: Will she even be involved?. Those Beasts movies haven't done WB any favors and the controversy around her online isn't something im guessing Zaslov wants to be associated with. WB can reboot without her if they chose to.

@Blergh - Problem is those movies have so much heart. Its very hard to repeat those feelings. im not a huge fan but id like to see the original cast come back for one more movie, just to see them actually be adults in a movie.

@mastakilla39 - The series ended successfully. thats why we got spin offs instead of a reboot. Now they want to reboot because this spin offs sucked. That first movie better be incredible.

@micvalpro - I doubt it just because they'd greenlight all 7 movies to be filmed back to back. Then we'll get at least prisoner of Azkaban before the decision to can this new series will come into effect.

@mastakilla39 - The first movie came out 21 years ago. The 8th (last) Potter movie was 11 years ago.

@mastakilla39 - Radcliffe didn't say he wouldn't do it. He said he doesn't think he's been away from it long enough and is content not doing it (for now). Grint said he would do it if Radcliffe and Watson came back. Watson hasn't said if she would. My impression is Radcliffe would do it if his role was limited, and Watson would depending on the script.

I mean, if they want to lose money and fans in a way that makes all that DCEU mess look minuscule in comparison, go ahead.

The only way I see this working is if it's more book accurate and animated and even that's a stretch. Somethings are just too famous to touch anymore.
Taonrey
Taonrey - 12/29/2022, 10:34 AM
@FearTheLiving - agreed and even then it probably be better as a series instead of movies
RebelCommander
RebelCommander - 12/30/2022, 4:10 PM
@Taonrey - Not that I want to see it for a long time, but I agree. I've always maintained HP would be a great TV series. Sure-fire way to guarantee a 7 year run. Give it a GoT type budget and do a 10 episode season at least an hour long episode each. Can be way more accurate to the books and go way more detailed and give more backstory that the movies just had to cut out

@RebelCommander - I feel like most book series would be better as good to high budget shows.

@vegetaray - eh not necessarily. The executives yes, they for some reason barely green light anything that’s not a franchise
Blergh

@vegetaray - the sad truth is that it's not JUST the execs in Hollywood. It's also US as the audience.
When new films get released we just don't show up for them and rather return to something familiar and already adjacent to an IP.
TUD
TUD - 12/29/2022, 9:28 AM
@vegetaray - Not really. Plenty of original movies come out every year, especially lower-budget movies and horror movies. But you've chose to spend your time on a website that mostly focuses on established franchises, so that's what you see.

Yep. The reasons are risk, cost of FX in some cases, in the case of TV the near death of the linear TV ad supported model and it's not going to get any better any time soon.

Possibly ad supported streaming will work but my gut says people really want to avoid ads and it won't work well enough. It's not going to get any better (imo) until the current content glut is reduced. That means cable has a near death experience and a streamer or six dies,,,horribly.
As always YMMV.

Of course this isn't everyone. There's a good chunk in here that I feel dream a little bigger in terms of their movie going experience, but yeah. Mainstream America can be fickle in that regard.

If they reboot, they really should do a long-form series. Otherwise, I don't see the point, considering the only negative criticisms about the movies tended to be concerning plot points that were cut from the books, which will inevitably happen again.
