HIGHLANDER Director Chad Stahelski Teases Henry Cavill-Led Reboot: "We're Trying To Do A Bit Of A Prequel"

The upcoming Highlander reboot starring Henry Cavill is still in the works, and filmmaker Chad Stahelski has now shared some new details about what fans can expect from this new approach to the story.

It's now been a good couple of years since we first learned Justice League star Henry Cavill had been tapped to star in a new Highlander movie. The franchise has sat on the shelf for years, but the likes of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and The Witcher have given the British actor a solid footing in the fantasy realm.

John Wick director Chad Stahelski is still attached to helm a movie that will be a modern retelling of Connor MacLeod's centuries-old feud with his fellow powerful immortals.

For those of you unfamiliar with the premise, Highlander follows them in a fight to the death to absorb each other's powers. In the end, there can be "only one."

Talking to Happy Sad Confused host Josh Horowitz (via SFFGazette.com), Stahelski shared an update on where things stand with the project and confirmed it will be a prequel. It also sounds like many of the character's past adventures will be key to the filmmaker's approach.

"I think we have some very good elements now. The trick is when you have the tagline 'there can only be one,' you can’t just kill everybody the first time," he explains. "I’ll say it for you first, our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that."

"But we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property."

Various iterations of a new Highlander movie have existed since 2008, with everyone from Justin Lin to Juan Carlos Fresnadillo attached at one time or another. Now, though, it feels like the prequel/reboot might be starting to take shape.

The strikes will have inevitably slowed things down, of course, but with both Superman and Geralt of Riva behind Cavill, scheduling issues are unlikely to stop him from beginning work on Highlander the moment Stahelski is ready to get cameras rolling.

Are you excited about this new approach to the beloved franchise?

Why reboot a perfectly fine documentary, where the events happened in real time?

I'm not a fan of Highlander at all, it's boring af and the dialog is ass. Im 34 so it was slightly before my time, and I didn't watch it growing up so maybe that's why. Kind of like how I have a sweet spot for Last Action Hero, which is my favorite movie, also watched it a million times as a kid. Nostalgia is cool, Highlander is mid af if you watch it for the first time when you're old. The soundtrack slaps though

Cavill as Juan?

Depending on who he'd be playing, no offense to Cavill, but I don't think he's interesting enough for that role, again depending on who he'd be playing.

@dagenspear - Yeah I almost prefer him to play Kurgan or Ramirez to McCloud if they go that route.

Makes sense. The main issue with the series stems from them doing the gathering in the very first movie. Its fine for being self contained, but adding movies to it means you have to just go in all these random directions to justify its existence.

Hell, after a while they had to pretend the gathering in the first movie wasn't the real gathering.

@Origame - Totally agree. I think the thing is that back in the 80s and such, filmmakers weren't thinking in the terms of sequels, trilogies, prequels, cinematic universes, etc. like a lot seem to be doing today. Hell, when pretty much everything back then was an original idea and not a remake, they had no idea if the first movie would even be successful, much less warrant a follow up. So they typically made them self-contained (like the OG "Highlander" film) and when it IS decided to make a sequel (and more) they have to really struggle to come up with something new because they pretty much blew their creative load with the first movie.

Nowadays a lot of properties are being imagined as franchises from the get-go, especially if they are reboots of popular older franchises (like this one). So they end up taking the original movie and its premise and stretching it out over a trilogy or more. As an example, I remember when the "Robocop" reboot was being made, the director (José Padilha) talking about how it was to focus on his process of becoming Robocop (presumably with sequels in mind), whereas the OG movie didn't really spend too much time on all that because presumably sequels weren't presumed then.

Hell, they're supposed to be rebooting "Gremlins" and I wouldn't be surprised if it's being planned as a darker trilogy where the first half of the first movie focuses on Gizmo popping off the other mogui and their slow decent into evil and ultimate transformation into gremlins who unleash hell on the world, only to be picked up on the second movie (which of course takes place 5 years later) where we live in a dystopian society ruled but hordes of gremlins, only have Gizmo return from a self-imposed exile in the mountains of Tibet who uses his knowledge of making boobytraps from watching the "Home Alone" movies to single-handedly defeat the gremlin forces. Actually, we need to sell some toys, damn it, so scratch that last part. Gizmo returns from a self-imposed exile in the mountains of Tibet and spawns AN ARMY of good mogui who uses THEIR knowledge of making boobytraps from watching the "Home Alone" movies to defeat the gremlin forces.

There you go. Even if the first movie tanks, the merch will save it.

I loved Highlander as a kid when it came out, and with that awesome Queen soundtrack. It hasn't held up well however and there are a number of casting and production choices (a French actor playing a Scot? A Scot playing an Egyptian?) which are questionable. The sequels were absolute junk, and it didn't help that they'd basically concluded the story concept in the first film so it made no sense to have a sequel at all, other than to cash in.

However, the basic premise is a very interesting one and it sounds like they're taking the right approach this time, by slowing things down a little and not rushing to have MacLeod be the only immortal left 90 mins in. This guy has lived for hundreds of years, so seeing him in different eras and different parts of the world could be amazing if explored properly.

Watched the original countless times I’m college in the 1980’s. I like Cavill but not sure I am interested in anyone other than Lambert as Connor.

This is excellent! They need put some weight into the origin and mythology. The original series started strong but lost altitude quickly. The TV show helped but I think it was tonally disconnected from the films.

@WEAPONXOXOXO - That's a really good choice. I like Cavill, but am starting to sour on him as a leading man. He is fairly flat in him performances a lot of the time.

Man, I realize that Christopher Lambert isn't the most versatile actor, but going from him to Cavill is still such a downgrade.

"When you have the tagline 'there can only be one,' you can’t just kill everybody the first time"

Yes you can. That's what the original did and there's a reason why it is still remembered as a beloved (cult) classic.

I like Henry Cavill, but I'm not sure he's right to play Connor. Christopher Lambert had a real sense of humor about him that was well-suited.

If they Do reboot the franchise, I hope they do Not go the alien route. The TV show was better than most of the movies.

Incorporating the TV shows is definitely the right way to go. The movies were horribly edited to say the least. But TV show with Duncan MacLeod was EPIC and got better every season.

"Highlander" (1986) is one of the top sci-fantasy movies of all times, no matter when you were born.

It is more a problem of the scenes taking place in the 1980s which seem strange to people who were born later imo.

The series had it's moments, especially in the scenes taking place in france if i remember correctly.

"Highlander II" is an unwatchable piece of garbage that i tried to watch in tv for half a dozen times, but i never saw it in one go.

A movie taking place in 2024 in addition to various flashbacks to ancient times could work.

Viking age, roman age, samurai japan and others.

Only the first movie is worth a damn. All of the ones that followed were progressively worse.

It will be a MAJOR challenge to find someone as deliciously evil and hilarious and menacing as the great Clancy Brown to play the Kurgan of course. I think Cavill is a great choice for Connor. Need a great Ramirez though....Antonio Banderas?
