HIGHLANDER: Here's The Latest On The Upcoming Reboot Starring JUSTICE LEAGUE's Henry Cavill

There's a lot of excitement surrounding the news that we're getting a Highlander reboot, and filmmaker Chad Stahelski has now opened up on the project's progress and whether Henry Cavill remains attached.

Last year, we learned that Man of Steel and The Witcher star Henry Cavill was in early talks to star in a new Highlander movie. The franchise has been on the shelf for a long time now, but the likes of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Mission: Impossible - Fallout have proven that the British actor has serious action star credentials.

John Wick director Chad Stahelski is expected to helm the movie, which is said to be a modern retelling of Connor MacLeod's centuries-old feud with his fellow powerful immortals. They're fighting to the death in an effort to absorb each other's powers because, and we're sure the concept will be familiar to you even if you haven't watched the 1986 original, there can be "only one."

"We're in the process of tweaking right now. I think we know what we want," Stahelski said of the new Highlander script. "More importantly than anything, we know what we want to make. It's in the creatives. We know what we're trying to make. It's just a matter of getting it to the point where we feel, 'Okay, this is it. Let's go.' But we're closer than we've ever been, so that's good."

As for whether Cavill is still attached to star, the filmmaker would only say that the actor is "one of my big choices." He went on to add, "It's not just about muscles and brooding. I think he's got an incredible range and I think he'd bring something very special. And his enthusiasm has been amazing in it."

So, while nothing is set in stone, it does sound like Highlander is heading in the right direction.

Cavill remains busy with The Witcher, and while it's unlikely he'll return as Superman, playing the Highlander could be an awesome role for him, especially with Stahelski's own action experience likely to help take that side of things to the next level. With any luck, the project will now start coming together at a quicker pace as it's a property worth revisiting.

What do you think about Cavill potentially starring in the Highlander reboot?

@Forthas - nah. He has three movies already, and alternative version of one of the movies. Time for some fresh blood.

@Forthas - Come now, someone else can be Superman. I’ve seen a lot excellent fancasts on this site alone.

@ScaryTerry - I think that people are sick and tired of WB constantly rebooting characters. They just announced they want to replicate the success of Mavel...well guess what? Marvel has recast only 2 characters in the past 15 years out of over 25. It adds to their world building and consistency.

Unless Cavill is being unreasonable he has earned the right to continue as Superman. When he was originally asked how they should expand the DC universe he stated they should take things slowly and introduce individual characters. WB ignored that and rushed everything. PLUS he has one of the great origin stories - Man of Steel - already in the bank. Is the studio going to retell it? I doubt it can be done much better.

@Forthas - I liked MoS and you raise good points AND I too want Cavill to come back, but it’s looking more and more likely he won’t.

Thought exercise: who would your second choice be?

Well...I don't have a clear cut favorite to replace Cavill if it came to that but the person I am leaning toward - and he would have to bulk up a bit more - BUT I think I would go with...

Patrick Schwarzenegger

He is scheduled to appear on "The Boys" spinoff. I am curious to see his acting chops.

@Forthas - Don’t know much about him past the surname, what’s your reasoning (aside from his upcoming performance)?

@Forthas - I could see this. I have also read that Patrick has received praise. So it's possible that he's not just a pretty face.

@Forthas - He might be OK in the role. He definitely has 10 times the acting chops of his old man. A movie I would recommend that he is in is Daniel Isn’t Real. after that, I don’t know if I could see him as a goody two shoes to be honest. He plays really sick and twisted person in that and you get thinking more of a villain. My actual initial thought was he could be a good Joker in the future, but we seen him some many times that I couldn't care less if we didn't see another Joker in the next 15 years. I’m sure there are other twisted people he can play though.

@ScaryTerry - He looks like a guy from Kansas who could have been once a boyscout. He also gives off a Christopher Reeve/Brandon Routh appeal. I am ONLY going by physical impression. There are other people like Tom Ellis who I think might be a better fit...but they are older.

It's funny imagining cavill took this role immediately after they announced the black superman movie on his birthday. Like he's just doing it so he can say in front of the largest audience possible, "there can be only one"!

They need to put a unique spin on the Highlander franchise. I will definitely check it out for nostalgic reasons but at the same time features like "Old Guard" has become this generation's answer to Highlander.

I’m not TOTALLY sold with Stahelski as the director. It’s hard for me to picture his style of action, i.e John Wick, fitting this franchise. But, while Highlander is a great movie, I don’t think it holds up very well. So, if he can strike the right tone with the action, I’m definitely interested to see what they come up with. Cavill as MacLeod could work really well, so I hope they can get him signed on as this moves forward.

@Santanaonfire - Dunno - Highlander has aged very poorly IMO... The extremely wierd accents that totally clash with their supposed origins... The poor action sequences... And some really cheesy over the top acting by everyone...

It's a fun watch when you're reminiscing and want a laugh or two with your school buddies.. but otherwise needs a radical approach for it to be engaging today

I wrote a script for a Highlander continuation immediately after seeing the horrendous Highlander 2, before reboots were a thing.

That is my reboot.

@SpaceParanoids - Highlander 2 was so bad and took the Immortals' origins in such a stupid direction that they basically just instantly ignored it the second it came out lol.

@TheSuperMex - Yes! It has fantastic visual style and atmosphere, the characters are fun, with Lambert, Connery and Brown especially clearly having a blast with their roles, and the soundtrack slaps.
