It seems Universal/DreamWorks have decided to take a page out of Disney's play-book by adapting a much-loved animated property for live-action.

According to THR, Universal Pictures is developing a How To Train Your Dragon live-action movie, with Dean DeBlois, who helmed the original animated trilogy - 2010’s How to Train Your Dragon, 2014’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 and 2019’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World - on board as writer, director and producer.

Though we're just hearing about this now, the project is several steps into the development process, as a release date of March 14, 2025 has already been set. Casting is said to be currently underway.

Marc Platt, a best picture nominee for La La Land, Bridge of Spies and Trial Of The Chicago 7, will produce via his Universal-based company Marc Platt Productions alongside Adam Siegel, president of Marc Platt Productions.

Based on the novels by Cressida Cowell, the animated films focused on a young Viking boy named Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) and the friendship he develops with an injured dragon named Toothless who he nurses back to health in a world where the fire-breathing beasts are not exactly well-regarded.

This movie will be based on the first animated film, and if successful, the other instalments will be adapted - and with a loyal built-in fanbase, we've no reason to think it won't be.

Together, the three How To Train Your Dragon movies have amassed more than $1.6 billion, secured four Academy Award nominations, and a Golden Globe Award for the second chapter.

I see many possibilities on how this could be a great live-action movie, but they will do none of them and ruin them just like all of Disney live action movies.

Although it is possible that Tom Holland will be chosen for the role of Hiccup xD, Isaac Hempstead-Wright is perfect for the role.

@Repian - Hate to be that guy, but you know damn well they won't cast a white kid in the role lol. I will be shocked of they do.

@CorndogBurglar - I give the MCU the benefit of the doubt because they have made history but this film is bad.

Still a fan of the MCU💪

@AmazingFILMporg - Same man. I still like the MCU too. I just haven't liked much of it lately lol.

But I know you do like the MCU and you defend them a lot, so seeing you say this carries some weight as far as I'm concerned.

Just when I thought DreamWorks was doing so great being the anti-Disney. A live-action spin-off with entirely different characters would be a better idea.

I'd release my how to train your dragon movie, but at some point, getting arrested just gets monotonous.

So is it based on the novel, or the movie? If it's the latter, I doubt they can duplicate the look of it. Animation allowed for far more expressive and weird style that a movie cannot create.

@bkmeijer1 - cgi? The only thing live action can’t do still to this day is expressive-heavy faces [(?) forgot what’s that called) and eating something like a burger or slice of pizza in one bite. Other than that, anything can be put into live action.

@Mrtoke - when I look at some of the character designs and dragons designs in the animated movie, I doubt translates well to live-action.

Characters like Stoick have caricaturic proportions that make the charachters all the more fun to look at. In live-action it's just a buff viking

Aw hell no. I actually thought the Dreamworks renaissance was coming to kick Disney's ass with Puss In Boots (f**king kickass movie btw) but then they HAD to pull something like this. Why can't we just have one good day?!
